Tech Advice for all, and for all subjects
If it uses an interface, which it sounds like, the bell and the relays could be different voltages.
12, 24, 48, 110 are common bell voltages in dc or ac.
Probably simple except the relay connected to the phone line/or transformer? would need to be very precise and hyper efficient.
I understand these can be touchy at best.
The direct style was highly recommended to me over the other type.
Easy to overload a system with multiple phones.
5 Bell equivalent is the max that reliably works.
I had great phones with a 2 Bell equivalent each.
Nice to not have a bell near your head too.
Worse place for it.

Have a vague recollection old phone systems were 48 volts DC, but that ringers were AC. A different frequency for each ringer on a party line.

Okay, I lost* my log ins for my MacBook (tiger) and want to do whatever the reinstall is that will let me reset them.
It's not clear what to do. I did back up everything--so I'm not completely hopeless...

I don't know how to restore the system. I think I have the right disk (OS install 1) but it's not apparent to me what I need to do with it.

If you click on start, then all programs, then accessories, then system tools, there should be one that says system restore.
Click on that and it will guide you through the process to restore to almost any prior date.

Sounds like you're talking about a PC. You realize that she's a Mac, right?
(If you're talking about a Mac, I wouldn't know. I would rather cut off a finger than own one..)

There should be an easy fix for this. If Fishy didn't have me on her plonk list after that nasty little TG thread, I could get it for her

Resetting the original administrator account password
Follow these steps to reset a password when there is only one administrator account on the computer, or if the original administrator account needs a password reset. "Original" administrator account refers to the one that was created immediately after installing Mac OS X. If the original administrator password is known, that administrator account may be used to reset the passwords of other administrator accounts using the steps described above. These steps require an optical drive; if your Mac does not have an optical drive and you have a Mac OS X v10.6 Install disc, see below.
Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.
Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.
Note: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account.
Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

Enter a new password.
Click Save.
Click the red button in the upper left corner to quit the application.
Choose Quit Mac OS X Installer... from the Mac OS X Installer menu.
Click Restart.

iPod, iPad and iPhone transfer to a new Mac
OK, so I have an old iMac which I've used to update my songs, photos, purchases, etc on all my Apple thingies (iPod, iPad, iPhone)
That computer is getting old and I suspect isn't long for this world much longer.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Air and would like to use it as the new 'base' computer to store all of this info - especially my music.
My understanding is that if I choose to use it to synch my phone/pad/pod that I'll lose all the data on each one and will have to start over again.
Q: is there a way to seamlessly start using my new notebook without losing all of the information on each of the itmes mentioned above?

Re: iPod, iPad and iPhone transfer to a new Mac
I recently bought a new iMac to replace my old bubble base iMac. I paid the 100 bucks at the apple store to have them transfer all my data on the old computer to the new one. It worked great. All my data is accounted for and my phone synched up with no issues at all. Yeah it is 100 bucks but very well worth it to me. Good luck.

Re: Tech Advice for all, and for all subjects
What about that new iCloud they included with the new OS5? It magically appeared on my iPad and is supposed to sync all my Apple devices automatically. The only problem is that I don't have any other Apple devices to know how good the syncing function is. Actually, it does sync everything on my PC and does that quite well. I no longer have to plug into the PC to transfer files, etc.

I need a tool for putting ends on computer cables.
The biggest option is tools that will do more than one function.
Any advice?
Brands, etc?

Re: Tech Advice for all, and for all subjects
How do I explain this one, hmmm....
Last year I ran ads on craigslist for Obtanium for The Pier, it seems after opening many, many replies for Obtanium, my PC became infected with spam bots for Viagra, Levitra, Cialis, and even some for heavy equipment/lifting machinery! The spam bots began out slowly, a few a day, then dozens a day and eventually 100's! of spams on a daily basis, wtf?!...Then one day the phone rings and it's a gal from BM ticketing asking for an alterante email address, I say "Okay sure, is this about the spam bot thing?" reply from gal "Yep, *giggles* hehehe"...(I think the entire BM ticketing office had a big roaring laugh when the heavy epuipment/lifting machinery spam bot(s) decided to join the "bot orgy"!!).... hahahaaa... Okay, we have a laugh and I give her an alternate email address, problem solved...or so I thought...because the very next day the fucking spam bots STILL keep on going strong at their "sending orgy"! wtf?!!? I think the bots got angry or something because I got sooooo many auto response replies from BM orders I simply couldn't handle it anymore (why should the bots have allllllll the fun, right?!!) and I blocked the orders@burningman(dot)com email address...now I'm wondering, am I gonna be ok? Please see below:
I just signed up for my pre-sale holiday ticket...and I realize, shit I used the blocked email address! Fuuuuck! I shoulda' given the alternate email, arg!
So far:
I found the reply from orders@burningman(dot)com in my trash folder (phew!) btw, I'm thinking I'll fall into the MAIN sale, but wish me luck anyway!
I printed the reply, moved it to my inbox and unblocked orders@burningman(dot)orders email.
I also changed my password and user name for my DSL ISP email account (I was told this would block the orgy of spam bots) and do NOT open any more unfamiliar emails!
Have I covered all the bases here? Is there anything I may have missed? Please speak up if you think I need to do more.
Also, when I run more Obtanium ads on craigslist, how can I handle them safely? Put my PH# in the ad and ONLY answer phone calls?
Or request the title of the email have a mention of Obtanium in it and ONLY open emails with Obtanium in the email title?
Thanks,
Moon

You should use a special address for most CL mail.
Most spam is easy to spot.
The spam filters get better with time.
Remember to flag spam that isn't in your spam box.
There is always more or better software for this.
Avast is good.
Delete without clicking links if you are unsure of any source.
Most mail can be opened without issues after going through your filters.
Links may still be inside that are risky.
I'm still looking for advice on tools.
Wireless sucks here.
Need to go wired.

When you say "ends" and "computer cables".. that's pretty vague. Ethernet "ends" I'm assuming?

Gotcha. You need a basic set of ethernet crimpers. A pair should be found pretty easily at your local Radio Shack or a decent set like these here via mail order..

Re: Tech Advice for all, and for all subjects
Are the cheap ones good enough?
Used to find them easily here, not so much now.
My electronics house offered me Qwest for about $35, good quality.
I may be doing camera installs, so a good one wouldn't be a waste.
I've just lost all my tools, so I need to replace my pro grade cable crimper too.
