Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
Thanks Pyro, you're back on top. States with strong state banks, funding state construction projects, farm loams, student loans, small biz loans, tightly regulated homeowner re-financed loans could save the states and even spark healthy competition among them. I despise both political parties. Both are utter failures at saving and invigorating the American Dream. Both are complete slaves to corporate money and influence. Gone is the people-centric republic of America. I am involved in local politics in my town. Democracy works on that level. Less successfully on the state level, but at least we have a better chance there than with the federal government. I support the Occupy Movement, imperfect as it is because it at least is shinning a giant spotlight on the corruption that is Wall St, private banking and corporate money in elections. And, it ain't going away. The Occupy Movement has staying power.Dr. Pyro wrote:Cowboyangel, we actually agree more than you think. I believe the North Dakota system, using a state (read: local) financial institution to save money and red tape is a wonderful idea and I would support that whole-heartedly. It's sending money to D.C. just to have some of it sent back to, say, California to be put to work is stupid and wasteful. A layer of bureaucracy that is simply unnecessary. Anybody who argues otherwise needs to be watered twice a week. If you can keep the money locally (and I recognize that non-locals use the roads, bridges, etc. but that is also reciprocal) and used appropriately, who wouldn't think that was a better system? Oh, wait, I think I could name a few.

Right. Sure there will be rough edges, but I say it again, the federal government will not, can not, nor is inclined to help the states. Federal government serves a different master and that master has global finance capital written all over it.ygmir wrote:well, CA handles that stuff fine, no?jkisha wrote:Yup, leave it all to the states. and, what if the folks in Idaho want to allow the pledge of allegiance?
How, is it up to people from NV and WA, or wherever, to tell people in ID how to do things?
As long as people would be free to move, how, could each state, setting it's own standards and practices, be bad?

Surprisingly, CA public schools rank 30th. There was a time we were at the top, but no longer. Then there was Prop 8. So no, unfortunately CA doesn't do that great a job.ygmir wrote:well, CA handles that stuff fine, no?jkisha wrote:Yup, leave it all to the states. But mostly I'm just saying leaving it to the states isn't a panacea either, and in some cases, states need require the federal government to keep them in line. (think school integration, or gay marriage after DOMA is repealed, or health care)

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
Less than accurate.
Since the October 26 announcement of a donation following the police
raid on Occupy Oakland, some have wondered how these funds are being
handled. At Monday night’s General Assembly, Occupy Oakland voted on
the next steps needed to make use of the $20,000 which Occupy Wall
Street donated to the Oakland encampment. Resulting from that
consensus vote, Occupy Oakland is in the process of opening an
unincorporated association in its name in the state of California.
The money is temporarily being placed into the Wells Fargo trust fund
of lawyer Timothy Fong. It will stay there for less than two weeks
while Occupy Oakland establishes the new, unincorporated account with
either a credit union or a community bank. Timothy Fong himself is in .
the process of moving his accounts out of Wells Fargo–and he– as well
as Occupy Oakland as a whole — urges other people to leave the multinational
banks as well.

Never said all the projects were bad. If they were all bad, then they would never get passed, now would they? And I'd submit that HST is more than "totally a pet project" or "bridge to nowhere". What do we say at TTITD? Oh, yeah, burn it down and build a new one.
We need to look imaginatively at the future, at increased population pressures, and at increased energy costs. We can't continue building freeways and stacking condos on top of each other. The central valley is becoming steadily more urbanized, and it's not going to stop.

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:
"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.
Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure.
Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.
Congressional Reform Act of 2011
1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

No response from my representation in the Senate or the Congress about how they feel on these specific topics. I'm surprised they didn't already have a boilerplate response to can out to me.

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
The eloquence and perceptiveness of Michael Parenti, brought to the thinking around the Occupy Movement:
http://truthphalanx.com/occupy-america/
From the article:
Time and again, the media made the protestors the issue rather than the things they were protesting. The occupiers were falsely described as hippie holdovers and mindless youthful activists. In fact, there was a wide range of ages, socio-ethnic backgrounds, and lifestyles, from homeless to well-paid professionals, along with substantial numbers of labor union members. Far from being a jumble of confused loudmouths prone to violence, they held general assemblies, organized themselves into committees, and systematically took care of encampment questions, food, security, and sanitation.
One unnoticed community protest was Occupy Walnut Creek. For those who don’t know, Walnut Creek is a comfortable conservative suburb in northern California (with no known record of revolutionary insurrections). Only one local TV station gave Occupy Walnut Creek brief attention, noting that about 400 people were participating, average age between 40 and 50, no clowns, no bongos. Participants admitted that they lived fairly prosperous lives but still felt a kinship with the millions of Americans who were enduring an economic battering. Here was a contingent of affluent but rebellious “middle Americans” yet Walnut Creek never got mentioned in the national media, as far as I know.
The Occupy movement has promulgated a variety of messages. With a daring plunge into class realities, the occupiers talk of the 1% who are exploiting the 99%, a brilliant propaganda formula, simple to use, yet saying so much, now widely embraced even by some media commentators. The protestors carried signs condemning the republic’s terrible underemployment and the empire’s endless wars, the environmental abuses perpetrated by giant corporations, the tax loopholes enjoyed by oil companies, the growing inequality of incomes, and the banksters and other gangsters who feed so lavishly from the public trough.

It might be interesting to see how this plays out. I do consider the riots over the past couple of years there to be a precursor to Occupy. Of course, they had tents out there for years in the 80s for apartheid. I mean against apartheid...Bob wrote:Cal Berkeley.
