Nothing to be embarrassed about- as in all things people's opinions are going to vary. Bob likes it as well and there's usually a line out the door at peak times. I just won't be found in that lineSavannah wrote:I actually enjoyed Sam Wo's restaurant.
It's very odd, you can get stellar inexpensive Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, Indonesian, Indian, Ethiopian, Specialty Latin (Yucatan, Ecuador, Peru...), German, Italian, Russian... on and on; but it's almost impossible to find decent inexpensive Chinese (any region) or Mexican (other than California style burrito's, which are addicting btw).
Years and years ago I went to one of those flourescent lit tourist trap looking Chinese places on Broadway with a group of friends, one of whom was from China. She knew how to order "off menu" and it was simply amazing, probably the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. I don't know what any dish was, but she ordered it half vegetarian & half omnivore and none of us left unhappy. 18ish years later I still dream of some of those dishes...

Absolutely this weekend. We need to revive that thread & see if anyone else is joining us. I have to work Bootie Saturday night, but I don't have to be there until about 10:30 so we have plenty of time to relax & eat.

I'm correcting myself on the snow issue: this is the latest on record we have not had ANY snow yet in fall. Last record was back around 1905... and we passed it a week ago.Ugly Dougly wrote:Is it snowing in Edmonton?

Well that's good news as I am heading to Edmonton this weekend for the Alberta decomp. My wife Lisa lives in Calgary so I'm flying in Friday and we'll drive up on Saturday. Are you going to be there Fufa?

Eric:
The Chinatown here is really small and sketchy, not something you would even walk down the street in, hence why I have an interest in the one in SF.
Can you reccommend some Thai, Vietnames, and/or Indian places? I love that stuff. We go out for pho and vermicelli practically weekly. Yum yum.
Academy of Sciences and Exploratorium are definitely on our list, as well as a trip over to Alcatrez. We found a pass that gets us 7 days of metro and cable car transit, as well as entrance to a few of the sites/museums we have on our list. Seems like a pretty good deal.

How much does it cost? (Just checking on the "dealiness" of the damn thing.)

The Lingnan in downtown Edmonton? That place... is amazing! Their lunch restaurant Chicken For Lunch is also so so good. We once showed up at the Lingnan with 6 people and no reservation, and waited over an hour for a table, which was totally expected and fine with us. The owner lady (can't remember her name) noticed and got so upset about it that she brought us a bunch of complementary appetizers!Dr Helix wrote:Have you been to the Lingnam?Fufa wrote:Eric:

Thai House Express on Geary & Larkin is great cheap Thai food (in a bleh area). Probably my favorite Thai places in my neighborhood- and Edinburgh Castle (great Scottish pub) is just down the block.
Osha Thai is another good choice- I prefer the Mission location (more vegetarian options for me), but if you eat meat they're all good.
Vietnamese:
My favorite is a dinky, dive-y limited menu place called Cordon Bleu, which specializes in Vietnamese bbq chicken, but makes a great veggie salad thingie I live for.
The best place in SF for Bahn Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) is Saigon Sandwich. John & I got two amazing sandwiches each for I think $14 total and we were stuffed. There's no room to eat inside and there is almost always a line (lunch only), but you can get food there then head down to Civic Center for the Asian Art Museum & City Hall and eat around there.
For fancy, incredible Vietnamese you can't miss with anything at the Slanted Door. It's not going to be cheap (figure about $60-$100 for two with drinks), but, oh, is it worth it; a bonus is that's its in the SF Ferry Building- if you go for lunch it will be cheaper & there's lots of great little fancy food shops in there. Do Not Go On A Saturday! It's madness in there!
Indian:
My favorite cheap Indian is Shalimar (we prefer the Polk St location, it's closer to us & the neighborhood is less... icky...). Nothing fancy, but good, filling food at a low price. Darbar across the street isn't bad (and has killer samosa's), but the owner is an asshole so we stopped going there.
For amazing Indian food, try Dosa (we prefer the Fillmore location, it's usually not as crowded as the Mission location, and even when it is you don't feel like you're about to elbow your neighbor). A little more expensive, but, like the Slanted Door, totally worth it. If you've never had Indian food for brunch you should really try the Egg Poriyal Dosa... *yum*. Very much not a cheap restaurant, but I would eat here weekly if I could afford it.
Burmese:
If you've never had Burmese food, you really need to try Burma Superstar in the Richmond district. Unbelievably good food. Don't miss the Tea Leaf Salad.
Indonesian:
Borobudur makes one of my main comfort-food dishes (Mie Tek Tek, vegetarian, non-soup) and has an all around yummy menu. They're reasonably priced (by SF standards) but come with a Big Catch: the service is friendly but Incredibly Slow. Do not eat here if you are in a rush!
Need more?

The woman's name is Amy Quon and she is incredible. My wife Lisa has shot many episodes of their reality show "The Quon Dynasty", so she knows her very well and considers her a friend. I've been to dinner there twice; excelllent, excellent food, as good as most anything I've had down here. We're actually dining with Amy on Sunday so I will be sure to mention this story to her. She will be so pleased to know you enjoy her food.Fufa wrote:The Lingnan in downtown Edmonton? That place... is amazing! Their lunch restaurant Chicken For Lunch is also so so good. Chico's Pizza in the tenderloin
middle eastern pizza, if you get the special
I liked hanging off the trolleys, even saw a brake changed in an intersection (brakes slipping on the hills adds some excitement )
I like going out in the bay.
Take a coat.
Did you see the maritime museum?
There's at least one good comedy club.
There's some interesting burner stuff around the bay.
Did I mention the cold war fortress under the park?
Shhh
