I got the flame cottons at Hancock, and the gold.... um, either Hancock or JoAnns, I don't really recall. I'm thinking JoAnns.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
I was actually interested in the one you posted for the purple brocade coat: McCall's costume M4626. I have a pirate coat that I love but the seams are ripping and I wanted to see if I could recreate it or improve it on my own.

lazerfox, AntiM and anyone else wanting sale patterns,
I have a running list of things from Joann's. At my local store this week (through Saturday the 12th) Simplicity patterns are 5/$5. Starting Nov. 19th McCall's and Simplicity will be $2 each.
I would be more than happy to pick up whatever patterns you find. Just let me know!

Is it tacky if my vest is the same material as my coat?
Ain't it a groove?

I hit things. All manner of things, like people and posts and other cars. The folks who have taken me out on a permit won't take me twice. I have failed every driving test, except for the one where the guy felt sorry for me and knew Larry, so gave me an on base permit in Japan. I never did get off base.
The panic attacks are pretty amazing and I refuse to take drugs so I can operate a motor vehicle. Seems wrong, and my cousin in California who needs drugs to drive has been in some fabulous smashies. I'm not the only one in the family, either. Cousins, aunts and nieces scattered all over the west can't drive. I flinch as a passenger, when we're next to trucks, it looks like they are falling over on us to me. Completely weird. And my peripheral vision goes waaaay back, and I flinch from movement behind my shoulders. Like eyes in the back of my head, not so good when it makes you spook holding a wheel.
Oddly, I do better on a motorcycle because the helmet restricts my vision. But you can't get a license for two wheels in Utah if you can't operate four wheels.
So I ride the bus, hitch rides or stay home. So far it works, although with winter coming on I may get a bit housebound and crazed. More time to sew.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Does anyone have any experience sewing fishnet fabric?
I picked up a bunch of non stretch black fishnet with approximately 3/8" mesh like that commonly used to make beach wraps, but I'm a bit baffled as to how to sew it.
I'm thinking a ballpoint needle, zigzag stitch, and possibly french hemming, but not really sure about it.

Hiya AntiM, I'm thinking December is a good time to dig through my fabric stash and start thinking about costumes for 2012. There just aren't enough opportunities in default life to dress up (how I like to) so I'm thinking, BIGGER, WEIRDER, and MORE VIVID! What are you up you?

Thinking about making a new muumuu to wear to Hawaii for my birthday. I can't resist the fabric stores on Big Island, and picked up some nice yardage last time we went.
I have plans to make grand plans. My tendonitis derailed my sewing for months, now I need to get my head wrapped back around it. I haven't even worn one outfit I made two years ago! So I have told myself no more fabric until I make at least three pieces.

LOL "no more fabric" right...I hope you can resist. Sorry about your body not letting you sew. That's torture for sure. A birthday muumuu sounds lovely. Is there ever vintage Hawaiian fabric for sale over there? Or has it all been grabbed up and sent mainland?
I like your plan for grandness...it's a good head space for December. I'll try to get myself there. It would be cool to figure out how to make a costume with some mechanical features and of course some lights. But then I also have some fabulous cotton prints I should use up.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
What is it you're thinking of doing with the fishnet? Wearable or non-wearable? That would make a difference I think. Also, any plans to blend it with another fabric (say like panels in a vest or something? If that's the case it'll be a lot easier to contain the mesh.Drawingablank wrote:Does anyone have any experience sewing fishnet fabric?

Well I bought a ton of this stuff thinking it would be cool to incorporate into some burn gear, but when I started working with it I realized that was probably a mistake at my sewing skill level - but I'm willing to learn.EmilyD wrote:What is it you're thinking of doing with the fishnet? The first idea is to incorporate panels of it into a skirt - alternating panels between cotton and open mesh. Basically straight vertical hems.
Another is to make a bolero jacket with mesh sleeves. Of course this would require sewing the mesh to itself, so I assume it would be much more difficult.
I am just looking at this stuff and coming up blank on where to start. Pinning the hem is tough, and I was wondering if I should consider an adhesive tape rather than pinning (or some type of fusible product) I was also wondering how the actual sewing of this will vary from more solid material.

Goofy idea: Could you cut fabric narrow (or use wide ribbon) and fold in half and sew to itself with the net in between?

The vintage stuff is hard to come by, although we did purchase Larry's shirts in the Salvation Army shop there. I buy my fabric at Discount Fabric Warehouse in Kailua. I found a place online which has similar fabrics, but there is nothing like seeing the bright colors in person!EmilyD wrote:LOL "no more fabric" right...I hope you can resist. The new stuff is wonderful, and they do reprint older patterns. Hilo Hattie is all copyrighted, so we scrounged the thrift shops for those shirts. I had a lady stop me in KMart and ask where I bought my muumuu, she wanted one for her sister. I had to tell her I made it myself. And I didn't even wear a shit eating grin until she was out of sight!

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
I did consider that as an option for the mesh to cotton hems, but was hoping to find an easier way since I've seen mesh products sewn without it. And since essentially the hem would not be any stronger than the mesh sewn directly to the cotton (same stitching either way), it might not really help any. As for the mesh to mesh hems it would probably not look right as the fabric would be visible.theCryptofishist wrote:Goofy idea: Could you cut fabric narrow (or use wide ribbon) and fold in half and sew to itself with the net in between?
I have picked up some 2 sided basting tape that dissolves in the wash to try as well.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Drawingablank, you might be able to sew the mesh to itself using a serger, aka/overlock machine. It's the kind that does zigzag hemming really tightly. Look at the inside seam of any tee shirt you have and you'll see what the stitch they make.

If you have access to a serger you could sandwich the two edges of mesh you want to connect, in between two pieces of velum (tracing paper) or maybe even tissue paper. After you've sewn the seam you can pull the paper out. It would work like the disolving basting tape but no washing required. Of course, I'm just guessing...having not tried working with mesh myself.

Kona it is. What's funny is Larry and I get taken for old hippie locals when we're there. Must be our food preferences, we eat at the drive in in Captain Cook, or the little Korean place by the Safeway.
