Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
What happens when a theme camp like Thunderdome or better, the Temple Crew, didn't get a ticket because of this stupid lotto system?
Maybe it's politically incorrect, but this has GOT to be the worst idea I've heard in a while. And yeah, you can quote me on this.
What it's screaming is "the hell with the loyal burners, we gotta kowtow to the spectators". Scarcity issue? Only because people held off to buy tickets, then they had a gold rush attitude going on.
Sorry... but I just got back from some time off, and it's making me wonder if it really IS the end of the event? Maybe someone will come up with a new event, a replacement TTITD, that doesn't break what works.
What I see - is an absolute cluster f*** because some who will only put in for the first or second tier, not get either, and miss out... or put in for all 3, and they automatically get the 3rd price tier.
Seems... scammy to me. And you know of where I hail, what I do, and How I seem to call it as I see it. Worse, what if MY camp has a 30% turnout because we had to have a lotto for the spectators this is meant to draw in?
--shrug-- I guess 26 years is just too much for loyalists.

I would just like to add my voice to all the people who are against this idea! A lot of us have demanding work schedules or are setting up camps/art pieces that require a lot of planning. How are we supposed to plan if we don't even know if we got in until the beginning of summer? Also, it's just too sad to think of burners who really love it not being able to go just by chance :{
Here's a better idea I saw on the boards:
"Instead of having 8,000 tickets at the $210 level, then 8,000 tickets at the $240 level, then 8,000 tickets at the $280 level, combine them all into one $260 bracket with 25,000 tickets. The ORG will still get their start up capital in February, and the hype of opening day sales will be mitigated"

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
I don't really give a shit if this is whining, or getting freaked out prematurely......I was so geared up for the ticket announcement (me being someone who plans way the hell in advance.) Instead of feeling excited and amped, I feel totally disappointed and worried. I don't even understand this plan and I read through it several times and read every post on this thread. Okay, the fact is that I know I'm going to get a ticket. But the issue is, when do I know I have a ticket? I just bought an RV that needs work. Being that I bought it just for Burning Man, should I hold off until I know? As someone who plans meticulously for Burning Man, this is the absolute possible news. I feel that I have absolutely no control in this.
Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
The Jack Rabbit Speaks seems--seems!--to say that the lotteries, billing (and ticket confirmation) will take place on an ongoing basis for months before they will actually ship the tickets. I will hazard that people will know they're going, but won't have their tickets in hand. This could be an anti-scalper measure, but I'm not going to speculate any further, because I really don't know. This whole business is like picking at a scab, and then wishing you hadn't . . . biting the inside of your cheek and then worrying it with your tongue all day.How are we supposed to plan if we don't even know if we got in until the beginning of summer?
I'm guessing that putting a direct link to eplaya in the ticket email is a way of focusing all the questions into one spot so that they can perhaps address them before updating the ticket page fully.
I imagine that the volume of questions prior to now (re: no ticket date and no theme announcement, etc) was reaching critical mass, so there was a decision to gamble on releasing what they could.
I have decided to table my worries until there's more information.

Every one is going to get a ticket.. Might be 50 or 100 more than expected.. I could sure use that for gas.

Oh, it's going to take no time for the people at Gate to decide whether the Icelandic passport is authentic and valid...Jwen wrote:How are we supposed to prepare? What about my friends in Iceland, Israel, England, Spain, Chicago, Florida, and New York. How are they suppose to prepare. They all ready have plain tickets and now there is a possibility of them not getting tickets to the burn because of a lottery. It is as easy as printing the name of the buyer on the ticket. Non transferable, like a plain ticket. Valid form of ID, and ticket at the gate and you are in. If there are some people that are not able to have a valid form of ID, then you should allow the BLM to fine them because it is against the law to be with out ID in the state of Nevada. It will teach those hippies to be prepared. After all it is called radical self reliance isn't it. Ticket with name and ID. Its that easy! This is going to be a feeding frenzy for scalpers. If half our crew gets tickets and the other half doesn't then we might just put our tickets on eBay and go to Guam or somewhere. Not good. Burning Man Failed...

Will this be perfect- of course not, we're dealing with BMorg. Will it be a whole lot less of a mess than this thread implies- it's almost impossible for it not to be. If this thread was the only info you'd think just about 10 really rich people are going to buy all 55,000 (or whatever) tickets.

Hmmmmm there seems to be a slightly salty suspicious tang of burner etiquette out, bigger BMORG budget in......... yipes.... what have they created.unjonharley wrote:jcliff wrote: That was my bark as a kid carnny.. Let's team up, just say no to gambling, let the now-transparent hordes of scalpers buy up all the tickets and.... let them eat dust cake.
It may not be a democracy, but without us, there isn't a them. Our energy, imagination and $$ supplies the camps, vehicles, music, furry chaps, volunteers and spectators to fill their empty space up.
I for one don't want my name printed on a ticket and I want to be able to buy a ticket "for a friend" whose name I haven't decided at the time of purchase. It's creepily like the reality I deal with every day, rules, rules, ID for gawds sake, fingerprints, passports, scanners, metal detectors, sniffing dogs etc etc. WHOA.
I could give up a year to get things straightened out. In fact, it'll give me more time to clean all my stuff up. I still have prayer flags hanging in the rain that hadn't gotten properly cleaned and pressed for next year......

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
So I'm gathering this isn't much of an issue for many others, but for those of us who have to save diligently for this event, does this mean I need to keep $300-$400 in my account at all times while waiting for my name to *maybe* come up? Also, will there be any warning before this money is withdrawn?
Honestly I think it'll work out better than you all think it will... this won't solve the scalper problem, but it will deter a lot of people from buying tickets purely to scalp them later, since there will be more uncertainty as to whether or not they'll even get a ticket. I imagine a lot of people won't even bother. But who knows. Anybody familiar with the scene will know that very, very dedicated people will end up ticketless come August... so I guess it could go both ways.
A pre-emptive GOOD LUCK to all, by the way. Sigh

This is an absolutely terrible idea. It gives scalpers even MORE power and is completely counterproductive to the problems that they've stated. I can already tell this new system is really going to screw with our theme camp planning, spending, building and attendance. Unless they give theme camps some sort of gauaranteed ticket amount which could admittedly start other problems. As other theme campers and I'm sure regular participants know losing one or more key members of a camp can dramatically affect the successful completion of a camp.

I'd not be inclined to sell any extra tickets I got at face value. If its a lottery, dont we deserve to win? I'll hold my own raffle...to the highest bidder!David M wrote:Something needed to be done, anyone who experienced last years ticket day fiasco cannot deny that.
It is almost guaranteed that whatever they did not everyone was going to like, and that someone would proclaim it, "the end of burning man!" (burners are sadly predictable)
I for one like the system. It seems to me that the lottery is more to figure out what tier tickets you end up with, not if you end up with tickets at all. There are A LOT of tickets available. Relax.
If you are so worried about scalpers and people in your camp/project/art car getting shut out, than put in for more tickets than you need and sell them for face value to people who need them. Tell your friends to do the same. Cut out the scalper market yourself, don't expect the BORG to do it for you. Radical self blah blah blah......

Didn't they do a spike on sales prices when they stopped the walk-in outlet sales? I may be remembering incorrectly. I thought they JRSed to folks that they were stopping walk-in sales and had VERY LIMITED tickets left to buy online at $400-420 or something.unjonharley wrote:What was the highest ticket price last year??
