Cold-brew coffee on the Playa

This guy claims he made cold-brew coffee at Burning Man using this method. I need my coffee in the morning, and I need it hot, so I'm not sure this is of interest to me, but those of you camping without stoves may find this fills a need.

I make a cold brew concentrate. soak coffee over night, drain off concentrate. (my filter container takes 7 cups of water to one pound of coffee) I drain off about a one liter soda bottle of concentrate. Refrigeration suggested after it's brewed. It's gaaaauugg, kind of strong to drink straight, but doable if necessary (late night driving) and is cheaper than a noxious energy drink. Add water hot or cold, sugar, milk (powdered milk) very nice. Very smooth, does have sort of a mocha taste as this guy notes. On playa, making the brew could be messy, but I can see the possibility, if the stove breaks, fuel runs out, etc.

I love cold filtered coffee- just start off with good quality beans because you will really taste them. Like Elorrum said- what you make is a base, you add water to dilute it to drinking strength. You could easily add hot water to get hot coffee (personally, I like my playa coffee chilled- it's a little more refreshing to me).

It is a mess to make- I agree with Elorrum again on just bringing the filtered concentrate.

The article is damn straight about the Aeropress. It's the only way I brew coffee these days, short of a Phin brewer for some Vietnamese coffee I bought (which is also mentioned in the iced coffee article linked in that site).

With the article's credibility firmly established... now I need to try that cold brew.

Hey...one of few people who know and love the Aeropress! I've been using mine for years...mostly for backcountry camping...but when I want a good shot of espresso at home, out it comes! Awesome little thing!

I like my coffee hot so I use a Jetboil with the french press thingy for 2 cups of fresh brewed coffee in about 3 minutes.
