lottery
lottery
The lottery will turn thousands of us into ticket scalpers. To ensure one gets tickets, just have all your friends that don't go enter the lottery, then reimburse them if they get tickets, and sell the extra tickets for a tidy profit later. Time to scuttle all that hypocritical bullshit idealism that Burning Man vomits up all the time. The BM owners are savy business people, and yes, BM is all about profit these days; time for them to admit it and come clean. I begrudge nobody for making an honest profit (BM is a great event, wish I'd thought of it), but what I resent is all their phony, disingenuous blather about non-profit, non-commercialism, rescue the Little Sisters of the Poor etc. nonsense. The owners are quietly fattening their bottom line by taking advantage of their customers altruistic ideals. Why else would they need to have a requested population of 75,000? Wake up people, BM's motives were pure some years ago, but now it's pure flatus, feel the stink.

Re: lottery
I agree with her, plus it's a great way to keep the population down.
Hey Trilo, can we make this thread a sticky so it doesn't drop to the bottom like the rest?

Re: lottery
Yup, I intend to have a couple of $1000 tickets available toward the end of summer. If you aren't lucky enough JS, during the Lottery, look me up.............

I think Jenny is making some very good points. These are going to be some of the unintended side effects of the lottery.

Re: lottery
We will go, I just hate the hassle of the ticket process and I don't believe that the lottery will help.
The problem that BM is trying to fix will not be taken care of by a lottery. The same procrastinationg people who did not get a ticket last year will be too clueless to get tickets in the lottery. In the end, they will likely be crying about not getting their tickets again next year. This will be a big pain in the ass for the rest of us and a loss for busineses that sold tickets offline. These folks did NOT make money on the tickets but having BM tickets brought customers into their stores, many probably bought something else while there.
The lottery has created a lot of confusion about tickets. How much will you pay? When are ticket lotteries going to happen? How many times do I have to go through the process to get a ticket? What if I still don't get a ticket even though I registered for the lottery early? What about theme camps, art installations, performers etc.?
The new system will also make it difficult for those who do not have a credit card. Not impossible, but difficult.
Sometimes we fear something only because it is new and different. I hope that this is the case with the lottery and that everything ends up working out OK. Only time will tell.
I remain skeptical at this point.
PS this is really JennyH

I understand all of your assertions and agree with some of them. But this is obviously untrue since the LLC is turning in to a 501c3 non-profit entity.
