Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
We'd like to attend in 2012 (lottery permitting, apparently)...and would be coming in our old truck with a 1967 Teardrop Camper on the back (unrestored.)
Until...I read that RV's are maybe not so welcomed. That they're sort of isolationist, and noisy, and ruin the aesthetic, and so on. ??
I can see this.
We aren't really an RV, at least in its modern connotation, although it's a vehicle and we're certainly recreational. No generator, not self-contained (water in storage containers, greywater handled manually, no storage tanks, no AC, no shower or bathroom.) It's sort of like a big square wooden tent thingy. With closets. She's a lovely spray-can sky blue on the outside and has been cross-country with us - she's a trooper, and we would decorate her for the occasion somehow.
But frankly, we'd be coming to share the community and art, and if our transport/companion/sheltergiver isn't appropriate for the community, then we wouldn't want to bring her.
Opinions on "RV's" of this type on the Playa? Thanks!

Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
There are more RVs than people at Burning Man.
Bring your funky camper shell thingy. If anyone gives you trouble, tell them that Nipple said it was ok. They'll understand.
Just... don't paint it red. Junglesmacks HATES that. "Too much red" he says... all the time... "Too much red." ugh. Don't get him started!

Hell, my RV has been known to host some pretty fun parties over the week. At least the back of it certainly does. So bring yours or share Yggy's. I'm sure he won't mind.

Thanks, Nipple!
No red. No problem. (not my color, not my problem.) Blue she'll stay. I had figured on covering the windward side with some sort of Super Windproof Indestructible Art & Writing Surface, anyway, and providing stuff, so anyone inclined might use her as canvas.
We're not visual artists, just acoustic music and words in our own art supplies, so we'll see what we might bring to share.
Hope to see you there in 2012.
Ygmir - now THAT is awesome.

yeah, there are some who whine and moan and insist that everything has to do it in the pure way--that they themselves happen to be following.Dapple wrote:Until...I read that RV's are maybe not so welcomed. That they're sort of isolationist, and noisy, and ruin the aesthetic, and so on. ??
hm.
Just be a considerate neighbor. That will help you with most people, and the people who don't like you that much aren't going to change their minds anyway.

Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
Don't you worry, Dapple. It's a big enough city that if you ask enough people, you'll find a bunch to complain about anything. RV's, tents, hexayurts, domes… you name it. The negative stigma I've seen/heard associated with RV's are mostly with the bigger 'land yacht' stuff, the giant behemoths that roll up right next to some poor unsuspecting camp and then they spend the week making the unwilling neighbors miserable.
I think Crypto hit is right on the head - just be a considerate neighbor (which is usually pretty easy to do).

This is exactly what it boils down to.trilobyte wrote:I think Crypto hit is right on the head - just be a considerate neighbor (which is usually pretty easy to do).
And this is really important no matter what your staying in, tent, RV, Geo-dome, honda civic, etc.
On another note:
Has any else realized how fun it is to say Dapple Nipple.
Could be a team sorta like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
You simply are not truly experiencing Burning Man unless you show up naked sitting under a lean-to, surrounded by your water, and an assortment of granola bars!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
I would take this coach out there if I could.
Why is it called a teardrop?
As long as you don't try to park in the fire exit of a theme camp on the esplanade on friday night, you'll be fine.
And yes, someone always tries.

Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
I think older, junky RVs are exempt from the anti-RV snob factor and in fact have a certain element of cool. Do get insurance if it breaks down. I do recommend building a shade cover to go over it made of 1inch EMT with fittings and black shade mesh cloth. I put a double layer of black shade mesh on top and single layers on the 3 sides that catch the sun. The RV never warmed up at all even though I never turned on an AC or swamp cooler.

Here's an older burner rv.
Why fuck around?

Re: Questions about an "RV" (truck camper)
Yeah, if you bring an RV or a camper, you pretty much have to have a bottle of booze to bribe the gayte people or they won't let you in. Other than that, you'll be fine.
