OUTRAGE OVER THE LOTTERY!

Fellow burners, here is an email thread from my campmates. Are we ALL outraged at this "lottery" (i.e.: MONEY MAKING) scheme? What are YOUR thoughts? What happened to community vs. commercialism?!?!?!?

Be sure to consult your JackRabbit speaks. B M is going to a lottery system that will require pre-registration. We should discuss ideas for handling this to maximize the chance for getting tickets, etc. It is possible, assuming all goes well in 2012 w/ the changes that this policy will continue. Aleta, this will apply to pre-sales as well.

I think this smacks of things to come....do you think, for one minute, this is not about the all mighty buck???? I question how, after years of friends, telling friends, telling more friends to embrace this event... to support it, to experience it, to participate.....they don’t know a cash cow when they see it?????? and commercialism has already raised its’ ugly head...some advertisers “appeared” OUT OF NO WHERE....

I agree. Many good points, especially about all the supporters for years and years who took the time to stay on line, buy early, etc. and now maybe not be able to get a ticket. We were more willing to rely on our own than take a chance on the lottery. We need to develop a campaign to get out to all Burners to protest this proposd system.

I’ve sent and e-mail to my brother Barry, as he is a faithful reader, but I do not recall seeing this when I submitted my survey.
I’m really quit taken back by it, and, I believe others will be/are too!!!!
I’m only a 4 time burner...can’t imagine how the “truly dedicated” feel about this “deviation” from the right to purchase early, with complete commitment...

Forward this string of emails to every Burner you know and encourage request, cajole and persuade them to send it on to all Burners they know. Before you know if Jack Rabbit and BM will hopefully get the picture that the proposal, while simplifying distribution for them, is going to shut out many loyal burners who are willing to do it the old way and take their chances rather than be subjected to a lottery.
Doug, I'm sure you have a bigger list than I do. Ron, you've got a couple I don't have, etc. Beth, I'm sure you have some and Allen's daughter and Barrry's son and others etc, etc, etc. Let's get this thing rolling.

In the very (very, very) near future, the org will be releasing a list of FAQ's (hopefully along with FRAs) which should shed some light on the new lottery. Just keep in mind that tickets took 7 months to sell out for this past event, so hopefully everyone who at least pays some attention to this new system will get tickets.

I can completely relate to the anxiety that you are dealing with now. I am dealing with the same issues with my camp and all the people who wish to attend. Take a deep breath and let's see how it will actually work.

I tired of being pissed of about the lotto. I'm looking forward to this FAQ. Perhaps the lotto isn't as stupid and retardedly crappy as we all think it is. As a BM virgin, I don't expect any special treatment. I wouldn't be offended if some theme camps that had an excellent moot report card were given special treatment, as well as people on this forum with over 1000 posts.
Alternatively, this lotto talk has brought up plenty of great alternatives that I've read in other threads.

EDIT: My biggest concern with the lotto is the people that plan to make multiple accounts and get friends and family to help them hord tickets to scalp. I'm hearing a lot of Burners threatening to do this, and it's pretty uncool.. nevertheless, they bring up an excellent point that I hope is answered in the FAQ... So FAQ-U!

How is it a money-making scheme? They're still selling the same number of tickets, and will likely sell 100% of the available tickets regardless of how they're sold. If anything, a ticket lottery with multiple rounds held over a period of many months defers income that they would have otherwise gotten in a fairly short period of time on a first come, first served system. Save your outrage, wait until the details and the FAQ have been posted and you can make an informed decision.

As a seven-consecutive-year newbie Burner, I can tell you that injecting chance (lotteries are based on chance) into whether I can buy my two tickets is a terrible idea. My wife and I have an emotional, intellectual, and physical investment in BRC and we do not see how the lottery idea meets our needs.

2012 will be my 6th burn. I too was stressed out over the ticket lottery announcement. However, We have no idea how this lottery is going to work, none. So, to panic at this point is just a waste of energy. (really, really big waste )

It's a catch-22 situation. "Why didn't you give us a heads up instead of springing this whole big plan on us" versus "Why didn't you release the details all at once." There's no single course of action that would make everybody happy… it is what it is. While the BMOrg wasn't planning on sitting around for the next few weeks, they have stepped up efforts to expedite getting details and the FAQ together. We should see more information very soon.
