Best way to reinforce grommets on a silver tarp?

Post by atossab » Tue Aug 24, 2004 12:58 pm

Put up the shade structure last weekend in a mild breeze, the grommets were already looking pretty sketchy. Any ideas? All I can think of is duct tape! Thanks.

grommets

Harbor Freight has poly clip-like gizmos that pinch onto the tarp wherever you might need extra support, are removable and don't make a hole. I've used them, but haven't given them the BRC stress test yet.

We bring a grommet repair kit for the tarps which do crap out. Invaluable piece of surplus.

When one of my gromets geets loose, I remove it, sew some more tarp material to both sides, and install a new gromet. The silver tarp material from Harbor Freight is pretty strong.

Gnome depot in SD only has a repair kit, and they're metal. If the tarp is torn already, how can this help? I'm looking for the little plastic thingies still.... I guess if I sew new tarp material around new metal grommets. Wait, why not just sew tarp material around them before I get there. Hmm, thanks again people.

Tarps

Zona_the_stona,

The clips you show I have seen up at the big box. Do you think they will work with 10 mil tarps?

Thanks

To tell you the truth i'm really not sure. I bought a pack of these but haven't tried them yet. I bought a 20x30 tarp on ebay. It has gromets on it so I figured this would just help tie it down better. We plan on hanging one end of the tarp to a car or shade structure and just rebar the other end into the ground. This will serve as shade for our tents. I guess I should experiment with it before I hit the playa

Zona_the_stona,

Thank You for my latest freak out. When you posted about a 20' by 30' tarp I went into repeat mode and thought that is what I bought. And then freaked out as this is twice as wide as I wanted. So I had to go tape it out. Which led to a close encounter with the Orange County Sheriffs. 4 of them. I think that they thought I had this big tarp (10' x 30') spread out in my driveway to dispose of some bodies. Now there are some neighbors I would not mind losing but I would never wrap them up in the driveway.

If your reinforcement fails here's an on playa fix that I've had work better than the orig grommets. Of course you'll need to bring a couple golf balls, small rocks or similar with you... cheap insurance.

Great answers from everyone, but TJ rocks. Not only a great suggestion but visuals. How cool is that.

Last year I made completely new grommet holes by putting duct tape on both sides and then I used the grommet repair kit. It worked quite well, allowing me to cut a whole tarp to size and reset a whole new set of grommets!
It's about beer O'clock guys....where's my riot?
