Birgin here, signing in!

Post by incubus_pantomime » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:02 am

Hello everyone!

My name is Mary-Frances, and I am a Birgin! (This is said loudly and with much vigor, just fyi). I'm 22, and I'm from Houston. I'm a recent graduate from Texas Tech University, and I am currently awaiting my decision letter from the University of Houston's graduate program in Counseling Psychology. I hope to receive my Master's and begin work as a sex therapist. My younger brother (20) and I will be attending our first burn in 2012. Thank goodness, too -- we should experience BM before the supposed end of the world, after all.

I've been following this message board for a little over a year now, and I didn't want to create an account and start posting until I felt that I was well versed in all things Burning Man. I didn't want to ask questions that I should already know after reading the First-Timers Guide. My brother and I have read all of the First-Timers' materials, and many external websites for tips and tricks, so I feel like we are ready to begin serious preparations for our first burn! :D We're both volunteers in the default world, so we would like to extend that to the playa. We're not sure where we would be best suited for help, so any tips would be greatly appreciated! We've given the possibility of joining a theme camp a lot of thought, but we've tentatively decided to brave the playa sans theme camp this first go-round. We've never been on any kind of trip without our parents, so this entire journey will be life-changing, and I think we'd like to have the ability to share private moments of growth together as we explore the world outside of Houston, TX. If a theme camp would be a better choice, feel free to persuade us. We're more than flexible at this point.

(PS: Thanks in advance for any welcomes and helpful posts! I can't wait to see Home for the first time!)

Welcome!

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with the org and theme camps are a good idea.

I would recommend Lamplighters or DPW as first year Burners.

If you think you would like to be rabid LNTers, let me know and we can get you into the MOOP Nazi Brigade.

Again - Welcome!!

Welcome to eplaya.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Hi Mary-Frances! :D

Check out the volunteer page here:
http://www.burningman.com/participate/volunteer.html

Categories are on the right. Something might leap out at you as being an obvious fit, or maybe not. As a long-time lurker, you may know that virgins are often discouraged from volunteering too much their first year. This is because you don't know how you'll fare in the conditions, physically and emotionally, and because it just plain old sucks not to have enough time to explore and do what you want to do, especially the first time out when you won't even know for sure. There is a sort of weird "efficiency" (not the best word, but the closest one) that comes over the 2nd-year or 3rd-year Burner in terms of arranging their Burns.

Anyway, if you commit to anything--ahead of time--do just a couple of shifts. If you don't see an obvious fit, Lamplighters is indeed a good first volunteer job. Without signing up in advance, you can simply walk up to their Center Camp installation at 5pm and be put to work, and done a few hours later. Then they have a party. :)

(Moop Czar, does DPW even take virgins, in your experience??)

Welcome to eplaya!

I have to say that volunteering for a shift selling Ice is a lot of fun!
And it is only 3 hours, so if you don't like it- don't worry- its almost over right from the start!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! We've been discussing it, and I think we're going to take a serious look at the Lamplighters Camp or Arctica for volunteer opportunities. =)

Hell yeah!
Those tend to be the jumping off points for Volunteering.
Good places to start and figure out just how much of your burn you want to spend volunteering.

A few eplayans are thinking about possibly putting together one whole ice shift. Or just trying to work the same shift. But it hasn't been discussed since August, so who knows at this point.

Hey there, Red Raider! So excited to see someone one here who went to Tech!

Yeah, Texas is more than a hop, skip and an jump from Black Rock City. We were initially going to drive, but with both of us (hopefully) in school come January, we don't want to miss more than the first week of classes. University of Houston begins its fall semester the same week of BM, and we've decided to fly there and rent a car. I've been scouring the boards for any and all information I can compile for safe renting tips. That way, we can fly back late Monday or (very) early on Tuesday and make it back in time for the second week of school. We started our BM fund months and months ago, and we're well on our way to our goal!

Since the members of eplaya have been so open and inviting, I thought I might update my life and its relation to Burning Man.

First of all, my life has become so much more exciting since I (finally) got my acceptance letter from University of Houston. I'll be starting in January, and I can't wait! Still trying to learn my way around Houston, so if you know any young burners in Houston that can show me some of the more interesting things to do on the weekends, let me know! Hard to explore this city when all of your friends live across the state.

My brother and I have been making our preparations for the playa, and we're really excited so far! We've filled out our volunteer questionnaires, and the more and more I read about the Lamplighters camp, the more I feel like they would be a good fit for us. Thanks for recommending them, Savannah! :D

Oh, and Brody, if you read this, you're awesome! My brother is by nature very shy, and your post about being shy at Burning Man has given him the hope that he can meet a lot of people who aren't going to judge him or tune him out because he's a little different (which happens far too often in the default world).

Haha! Well, I like to take photos of myself from time to time. I figure, if I have the proper equipment, the creativity and the college-level skills, why can't I make myself glamorous? (Plus, I am single, so I figure it can't really hurt lol).

If you're interested, I will have my camera out on the playa (respectfully asking before taking pictures of anyone, of course -- I'm not going to make anyone feel like they're having their playa experience ruined). Let me know if you want your photo taken! :D
