New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
Just a thought... What about the people that can afford the more expensive tiers that opt for registering for all three? The people with limited income can be screwed. Not in a the fun way either. Or maybe it is the fun way....hmm
Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
This is a great idea.
I have been going to the burn for the last 5 years. Not One time has the ticket system worked.
And I'm one of those who has his shit together. I just don't have time to take a whole day off work to wait around to be booted out of line 4 hrs after I was supposedly in que.
Personally I would have gone one step further and made all the tickets the same price.
Oh and I am part of a pretty large camp on esplanade and not one of our tribe dislikes this new idea.
Thank you for listening

an improved road would probably be cheaper than scanners and x-rays and e-tickets at the "i'm more techy so i should get in first" line at the gate...

@ellorbito - people who can afford it have always had the opportunity to go for the lowest tier available. If they chose to pay for a higher tier, that was their gift to the community (and thank you to everyone who's ever done that).

Only now, it looks like we'll have to choose between:trilobyte wrote:@ellorbito - people who can afford it have always had the opportunity to go for the lowest tier available. * choosing to pay for a higher tier (choosing to leave lower tiers for others), vs.
* trying to ensure we can even get a ticket to go.
And if you need four tickets for a family...
... or want more for gifting ...
... or don't have a credit card...

Well, it is your money. I haven't looked at the set up yet, but it looks like January still. So, I don't think you're losing a lot of time.tamarakay wrote:I'm still not going to be spending any more money on setting up for burningman until I have tickets confirmation in hand. We don't have much "spare" income these days (three kids in college) and have to sacrifice other things to be able to go to burningman. I'll just plunk the money into the savings and wait. Go ahead and snark me for being uber cautious, but really, what else would I use a monkeyhut and playtech furniture for?

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
i have read I believe all that has been posted on the Burning Man website. Me personally look at this process like Life, what guarantee do we have we are going to be alive tomorrow? I have learned this and being a crazy guy that has yet to be caught ( I will go quietly when They show up to take me away-hope they have that 96 pack of Crayola crayons available beside belt making material) if I am meant to go, nothing in the Universe will prevent me from being there. I understand the volatile reaction toward this deal, but is not Burning Man a place where Magic Happens? And the individual souls that will be destined to make that Magic will be part of that formula. If I am to be a part of that equation I will go. I LOVE the system that was painstakingly put together. I trust the one's running this deal and their sincere desire to make it fair. I also know that we should give it a chance and if mistakes happen, they will be fixed. Nothing is perfect and this new system may have faults but we will not know that till it rolls out and is live. I support and thank the persons putting this together and salute your service to this community.

I just don't see how a lottery holds true to the 10 Principles of Burning Man.
First of all being Radical Inclusiveness.
This is going to be my 10th year in a row. What happens if I don't make the lottery?
I couldn't imagine missing a year....

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
I was looking at going for the first time this year, but reading this reminds me of Democrats thinking Republicans are idiots and visa-versa. How does this fit in with all the "community" talk I had heard before.
Maybe this will turn others off, like it has me, and there there will be a surplus of tickets rather than a shortage.

Thank you for your response. I believe that was not the intent, it's just how it came across to me. Just like I may come across as whiny to youactiongrl wrote:A: Because Radical Inclusion principle is a FAQ, is why it's there.
We did not start saying "it's a way of looking at life" because we're changing the way you get your tickets. It is genuinely part of the story of this culture --ask anyone out there in the regional network and they'll say we've worked to support year round Burning Man connections almost as much as we have the BRC event itself. I guess the point was to say it's not like we don't want to be including everyone, it's just a challenge to figure this out with the event having grown in awareness.
Really, we meant no condescension and I'm sorry if it sounded as though meant to be so.

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
The ten principles are not some juggernaut that can counteract the number of tickets that the blm allows to be sold this year. Having some people miss out is not fair, and any system that we could use to decide who does and who doesn't get to go is fundamentally arbitrary. So, they chose a system. It's not the system you would have chosen.

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
Sigh. Now just wait. Why in the world would someone that could afford the highest tier and WANTED to 'gift the community' only sign up for the most expensive tier and knock 2/3 off their chances of receiving a ticket at all? I haven't ever had a problem buying a ticket; OK last year was a long wait, but it was a DAY and when I hit the payPal thingy, if it hadn't worked, I COULD HAVE FIXED IT RIGHT THERE... I had choices to make the sale work.
Haven't you EVER had your credit card turned down when it was a complete mistake? Can you imagine the transpositions typing all those in? Just saying, I guess this means I'm a control person, because I've always been able to plan and then had so much more control! When I Bought. How I bought. I am now going to have horrid credit card dreams that I get picked but it doesn't go through.... it could be anything! Simply THEM not putting it through right, what are the chances that 10,000 x 3 sets of tickets in a few weeks will not have any mistakes? And if they do? No chance to fix. Go to next tier is the best outcome.
We won't even know. If we GOT picked and our credit card for whatever human error did not run through. We'll get the black dot in the mail.
As long as I'm worn down and don't have the spit to really protest.... I'll just say that at a time when I know a LOT OF PEOPLE, including me, have closed bank accounts or run them on a bare minimum to spank the stinkin' banks for the damages they have caused this unradical country, I really hate the idea that in one stroke, we can't just walk into the country grocery store and buy a ticket. With cash. Or that we HAVE to have a credit card... I know people that literally cannot get one these days because of the credit situation. Did you know that THESE DAYS (thanks "Patriot" Act) that banks are running credit scores on you.... you can't even GIVE THEM MONEY to open an account unless you have good credit. I'm guessing from the grand free souls I've met at bMan that many do not have the credit score to have a credit card. OK - they can "load" a debit card. Guess what? That requires cash up front. That is not a credit card that allows them to pay for the ticket over a few months according to their budget. It's cash. Not everyone has that on the tight schedule described. Tickets sold out in July last year, that is a lot more time to load a debit card than by January. PayPal has been my pal. When I went to pay for tickets, if for some reason my 'primary' source wasn't working, I had other choices, a back-up plan. No longer available in one fell swoop.
For such a dusty, low tech experience, getting in requires some due diligence, high tech and good credit. I guess I'm just feeling despondent about the good old days. And wondering how the atmosphere of the community will change with the experience demanding cash up front in January. That's a month after Christmas expenses and 6wks after real estate taxes are due. I guess it'll get more glitzy because the real money is gonna show up this year.
BTW: Burning Flipside in TX, which they used (in part) to fashion this experiment after? It had 2500 participants last year. Wow, that's not too difficult to deal with. I could have done it with pencil and paper.
The only thing I was glad to see was that our names were not going to be tattooed onto the tickets and thus be non-transferable. And had I needed to show my passport to get in, I really would have to quit. I resent doing that at every interior border patrol I drive through already.
Have to go round up my circles of credit-card bearing friends and family to ready camp for The Big Experiment. I think this year we'll do Camp Lottery. Forget about gifting, you'll need to have a credit card to play. These things are expensive.
I guess I need to start dreaming how it'll go next year, after the fall-out of this years process can be evaluated.

Credit card charging will be fine. A store can put a credit hold on a certain amount, and then nullify it if it is not used. Essentially the "approval" for the card is done immediately when you add your card when you enter the lottery. I have no idea about debit cards. Debit cards work as well.

@tamarakay. I find as a 6 year burner, I already have most of what I need, and can pretty easily plan for what I don't have, ie more nifty reflective bubblewrap for the van, maybe some more repairs on it. Chip in on prizes for the camp. Food. Gas. Everything else is a luxury, not a necessity, except of course, the ticket.

@Kykyri - the announcement at the top of this discussion board includes a bit taken from last week's Jack Rabbit Speaks, which explains why change was necessary. The 'General FAQ' section, towards the bottom of the FAQ page, has some other helpful Q&A regarding the general process/changes. Hope that helps!

Has anybody mention yet that this lottery system sucks! Two week of unnecesssary anxiety. I haven't ever seen Scotland...
Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
So, just to be perfectly clear, the most ethical way for someone who has enough money to pay for any tier would be to apply for the first round 420$ tickets, and if I don't get those, apply for a 390$ ticket in the second round, and if I still don't get one then cross my fingers and go for the last chance sprint? Would you recommend against putting names in more then one tier? I feel confident with this new lotto systems. Just tell me everything is going to be alright.

If you go for xmas tickets & for some reason don't get them, you are automatically entered for all 3 tiers in the Main Sale registration. You don't have to do anything.
Look at your chances this way- for you to not get a ticket in either pre-sale or the Main sale would mean that more than 43,000 Burners had their shit together by the middle of January to get tickets.
Think about that.
43,000+ Burners will have to have their shit together to cause someone to not get a ticket in one of the early draws. Possible, but oh so very unlikely.
