Someone alert gaminwench to yggy's quadricep in pic no. 8 ("installing the slotted base").

I feel that she would want to know about this.

So,
I found this old sewing machine, seems a cool old thing....and, well, I have a bunch on work pants, that need crotch seam repair........
I got it moving, lubed it all up and all that, everything seems to move smoothly (now) and timing and all that..........but, don't know how to thread it.......and, I think it has a "Bobbin" below, if that's what it's called?

can anyone point me in the right direction?

Yggy, nice machine!! :D

Is the bobbin round, or long with a pointy tip (shuttle-type)?

Hiya sis.

Knowing that your treadle machine has the bullet type (if memory serves), I was wondering if the bobbin winder (in full view there) might not lend a clue.

In either case I'd think that a google of the make and model might give you some love in the threading directions arena, Yigg.

Now. For how to make that crotch seamless, you'll be wanting to talk with (Ding)Pat's Primo Patches for Protecting the Posterior (or Penile Area) of Pants you Prefer. That'd be Triken. She can give some really good advice for how to do things right there.

Hiya Delle!!

Thanks for the free patches advertising!
With 3 electric machines and one trusty treadle, the only one I ever use is the treadle. It has worked faithfully for me for decades!

Looking at the bobbin winder, I see there's a piece missing. That piece is what would tell us if it's a shuttle or a spool.

it's round, and seems to sit in a holder thing, under the needle.
Both needle and bobbin have what seems several paths for thread to take, and devices to be put through, or around.........
and, even with the delicate and dainty hands and fingers I have, I can't imagine getting the thread in and through those spots and things...........

it's a model 83.

hey, I wonder if googling "how to thread a model 83" would work?

*races out the electronic/ethereal door*

ETA update:
no help on google........dang.

ygmir/odin... it would appear from this page http://www.searsarchives.com/history/fi ... ing_id.pdf that your model 83 was built in 1938 & has a Nomenclature Model Number of 117.831. Going to this site http://www.sewingmanuals.com/Sewing_Mac ... enmore.htm they have your manual (their # 129) as a pd download, a hard copy or on CD. & they take PayPal... hope that helps.

LBHAT.... point One out

K. Found this:

Here's How:

Place a spool of thread on the spool holder.
Traveling from the spool holder, across the top of the machine, look for a minimum of one thread guide.
Insert the thread in the thread guide(s).
Now look for a tension mechanism.
Bring the thread downward to the tension mechanism, slip the thread between the metal disks of the tension mechanism, and travel back upwards with the thread.
Look for a take up mechanism. This is the area on the front of the machine which will go up and down, when you turn the hand wheel.
Place the thread through the take up lever. Some machines are set up so the thread will slide in to this, others require you to place the thread through a hole.
Now the thread will go downward on the left side of the take up lever.
Locate and thread any thread guides, leading down to the sewing machine needle.
Thread the sewing machine needle.
Hold the thread with your left hand and turn the hand wheel.
Watch for any thread to flap around. If this happens, you have probably missed a thread guide.

It helps to have a threader (costs about a quarter) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needle_threader

Dental flosser's used for braces or bridges are super handy too for the machine threading (if your dainty hands just aren't doing it for you)

http://www.kleenteeth.com/mycategory.ph ... 4Aodvw5ArQ

And then there's the matter of getting the thread in your bobbin running in the proper direction. Put it in backwards and you'll just end up with a bunched up mess of thread.

Not really.

I just gave you gibberish. You'll still have to figure the whole thing out on your own.

Sure you wouldn't rather ask for an old sewing machine on Craig's list for cheap or free? Or perhaps as a trade for this beauty that you have right here that might be just what someone wants in exchange for one that works and is PRE-THREADED??????

then all you'd need to do is tie your new thread onto the old one and run it thru its course so you wouldn't have to figure out it's route at all.

I have an old Kenmore just like that one, you'll probably need to take it in for a tuneup at a sewing machine shop to clean & oil it and get the right tension.
