Fire and Hurricane-grade winds occuring in Nevada
Firefighters are currently battling a large fire that has already consumed 20+ homes in Reno, Nevada. More than 9500 people have been evacuated, and they need your help. There is a very large fire in the Reno area, coupled with 50mph winds throughout the area, and higher winds-reaching hurricane-grade in some areas. The firefighters are currently battling the fire without helicopters or planes due to the excessive winds. A state of emergency has been declared for Reno and Washoe County, please help as you are able.
http://www.co.washoe.nv.us/index/emergency.html states:
Those wishing to volunteer can call the Red Cross at 775.856.1000.
Donations of no-perishable goods, clothing, blankets, etc. can be dropped off at the Salvation Army warehouse at 2300 Valley Road in Reno.
All other requests for information or offers of assistance, call 211, 775.337.5800, or email [email protected].
***
Reno and Galena High Schools are hosting evacuees; Reno Livestock Events center is offering to board livestock/large/exotic animals displaced by the fire.
My thoughts go out to the victims and firefighters...

wow
It is 400 + acres, zero percent contained. It has jumped Lakeside and reached Del Monte Lane Parkway west of S. Virginia.
The current evacuation area encompasses everything southwest of McCarran and S. Virginia Street, and the entire area between Skyline Blvd., S. McCarran and Plumas.

I pray that all our Reno burners are safe. I know they are likely more prepared than most for an evacuation and also will network to help one another.

The Red Cross is in ‘dire need' of monetary donations to help these families. They use the monetary donations to immediately help those in need that have lost their homes and/or been displaced from their homes, giving them a debit card to get the things they immediately need to help their families.
2000+ acres
Local hotels stepping up to the plate, offering reduced rates for those displaced, from as low as $29.

Less than a mile away, they get 100+ mph winds so yes, they did have very high winds all day. At my house we had 70+ mph winds today. These winds have been going on nonstop for 16 hours.Ugly Dougly wrote:Indeed it is, but 50mph = hurricane force?wh..sh wrote:Its really sad...

50 isn't, but I think 80+ is...and there HAVE been gusts over 90mph with a constant of 50mph (some areas were lower than 50, just like other areas were over...but SOME areas did receive winds up to 98mph-so I've heard...and the location of the fire is/was getting a constant of 50mph with gusts around 80mph....so yeah, firefighters are fighting a fire in extremely high-in some cases hurricane grade-winds).

Re: Fire and Hurricane-grade winds occuring in Nevada
In addition to the fire, there have been reports of large trees being blown over, power outages, and other problems as a result of the high winds. All schools are closed, and the city and county are in a full state of emergency.
Even people who did not loose their homes are/can be effected (for example hospitals announced that they have been receiving a high number of Reno residents with respiratory problems, there has been wind-damage throughout the city, and the power and gas outages currently effect thousands of Reno residents).
If there is any way you are able to help, please do so...even if it is only to send good thoughts to those effected.
Here are some things Reno residents currently need:
* Food (Non-perishable food can be dropped off at the Salvation Army warehouse at 2300 Valley Road in Reno)
* Bottled water (for persons in shelters and use by firefighters)
* Blankets (for use at shelters and to give to those who lost their homes)
* Large-animal feed (should be taken to one of the large-animal rescue centers:
-Reno Livestock Events Center
-Marie in Spanish Springs who can be reached at 240-9002
-1215 Mineral Flat in Antelope Valley
- Tuff Luck Ranch 175 River Road in Dayton (accepting cattle or horses)
- Beth Gee 691-6096
* Dog/cat/bird/other pet food (to help feed evacuated pets; can be taken to any of the centers accepting small pets, here is a list:
-Advance Pet Care, 2001 Prater Way
-Bob at 321-5300
-Feline Rescue of Northern Nevada (cats only please) 544-4475.
-Franktown Meadows in Washoe Valley accross from Bowers Mansion (accepting any type of animal) 849-1600
-K.A. Animal Rescue, ask for Deborah at 246-3296
* Toys and other items for displaced children
* Monetary Donations (payments should be made to the local Red Cross)
UPDATE: Although the winds were substantial earlier, the high-wind warnings are no longer in effect. The winds seem to have died down a bit now. This may give fire crews the opportunity they need to stop the blaze. Please send good wishes...

Re: Fire and Hurricane-grade winds occuring in Nevada
We got hit with a 66 mph gust in Carson City (30 miles south). Sustained winds were 45+ pretty much all day.
Good news- Sis is now a "True" burner-the fire took out her back fence and a couple feet of the backyard. Sis, children, husband, dogs and cats were evacuated and are renegading at another camp members place, a comfortable 7 homes away from the fireline.....
THANK YOU FIREFIGHTERS!!

UPDATE re: Fire and Hurricane-grade winds occuring in NV
UPDATE: Along with a reduction in wind, snow is now helping subdue the blaze.
Evacuated families (and those who lost their homes) still need your help, but at least now firefighters have an opportunity to get the fire under control. Please continue to send good thoughts/positive wishes for those effected.
Thanks!

My response team was called out at 6am this morning and did traffic control today. When we were relieved we were told to get rest, that we would be back at it 7am tomorrow. Things must be going somewhat better because I received a call that we are on stand down and that we probably won't be needed tomorrow. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Latest update states that firefighters estimate about 80% containment on the fire, and hope to have full containment by sometime mid-week.
Here is a list of the most-needed items:
-Bottled water
-Blankets and clothing (please drop-off or mail to the Salvation Army 2300 Valley Rd)
-Non-perishable food items. The Northern Nevada Food bank states that they are most in-need of the following items:
* Canned Meals: stews, soups, spaghetti/ravioli
* Protein Products: peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken
* Grains: cereal, oatmeal, rice, pasta, dried beans
* Fruits: Canned, fruit cups, dried fruit, applesauce, juice boxes
* Canned Vegetables
* Shelf Stable Milk
* Kid-friendly Items: granola bars, popcorn, animal crackers, graham crackers
* Baby Products: formula, infant cereal (please NO glass)
Thanks...and best wishes to all those effected by the fire.

Although still burning, firefighters estimate full containment of the Caughlin Ranch Wildfire. Please remember that the Northern Nevada Food bank is currently accepting food for families who lost their homes, as well as providing for the general community. With holiday meals coming up, please donate what you can.
Thanks,
Kinesthetic

God bless our brave firefighters for the fine work they have done. You'll notice who did not bother to offer or volunteer their services in this true time of crisis? Anybody associated with the Occupy (fill in town here) movement. Who did volunteer? Hard working tax paying valued members of society, that's who. That speaks volumes in my opinion.
<edit> To put my money where my mouth is, I'm sending the Reno Red Cross a check for $200.

Anybody who wasn't a fire fighter/emt was asked not to come up and get in the way.
As for volunteering,
Occupy Reno did put out an offer of help and shelter for those in need during the fire.

Yep we've got another fire raging plus the 17 car pile up on 395. Coming home from Reno today, Hazen was a white out and looking out towards the horizon brought memories of la playa...sigh
