Hi Everyone, Lurker for 1 mo, Burner for 3 mo
Hi Everyone, Lurker for 1 mo, Burner for 3 mo
Hi Everyone,
I am a new (2011) burner from Tennessee.
I had a great time in BM11, went with a good friend who helped me out a lot with logistics - we had ~ 8W of solar power, a swamp cooler, and reflective tarps over the tent. We went to army surplus stores adjacent to a nearby base and I got a really nice military grade camel back and Wiley-X goggles for about $40 total. We managed to pack everything into four standard size bags for the flight. We joined a small camp with about eight really great people. I brought supplies to make and serve espresso every day.
I don't believe in the whole "experience that will change your life" business, especially when people specifically tell me that an experience will change my life. However, I must admit to having dreams about the playa at a rate of at least two per month, and I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how I am going to get to 2012 and what I am going to do there. In one dream one could get to the playa by running full tilt into a wall of 12-packs of soda which would teleport you into playa-world. I tried this in real life and it worked, although the alternate dimension is not actually BM, but there are a lot of similarities. It is an interesting place, but the vibe isn't entirely there. Nevertheless, I recommend that everyone try this at least once. You can usually find a big enough stack at a grocery store when there is a sale.
I am very eager to build/make things, but it is hard figuring out how to get it to BM from the east on a low budget. 2012 is going to be touch and go for me as I need to find a better solution than car rental. My 2012 contribution will likely be bringing several trash bags and trying to fill them up on my morning walks through the esplanade and the deep. I was thinking about actually getting a trash grabber tool, bucket, and making a uniform.
Listening to the whole ticket debate sort of got me interested in joining eplaya. Not that I want to talk about tickets, I just want to talk about BM. Honestly as an eastern US person struggling to make it to BM at all, the ticket system and cost is the least of my worries. The other hurdles to making it out there - cost of car/plane/resources, securing nearly two weeks off and leaving my partner, house, and dog, etc, are a much greater challenge than purchasing a ticket.
Anyway, hi everyone!

However way you got here, welcome to ePlaya! As I'm sure you'll see there's plenty around here besides active chatter on the ticket boards. Lots of ideas for projects and how to try and make the logistics work.
Take a look at the regionals section on the main page and try to reach out to the right regional group for you. They'll likely have their own mailing list to keep an eye on, and connecting with like-minded folks in your local area could go a long way in sorting out the transportation part. Maybe there's some kind of rideshare, or someone with space in a truck coming from where you're at (or someplace further east) that will end up working out. People post & talk about that kind of stuff over on the Share Resources board (in the 2012 event category), hopefully it works out.
Cheers!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Ah, but the earth has turned on its axis, and the time to bitch about tickets is passing. The time to bitch about the new theme is coming to fruition.

Hi 52!! Welcome to eplaya! You won't find a better place than here to meet people, learn things, and have a good laugh once in a while!

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Hey dood...make it your mission to meet this lady! See me if you need assistance.Savannah wrote:Hi 5280MeV! I like the cut of your jib.
Hi Savannah...heh!
Anyway...in my life I've been up against the same issues: not enough time, not enough money, etc., and they seemed insurmountable. One overcomes these obstacles by making the commitment to do whatever it is that these obstacles appear to be blocking. In terms of Burning Man, that would seem to not only SAY you're going, but put skin in the game by buying the ticket ASAP! Trust me...everything else will fall into place. Now, that doesn't mean that everything will just fall in your lap. You WILL have to do the work to bring all the logistical and financial elements together, it's just that by having made the commitment you'll be more inspired to do the work.
If you already know this, great! Then this message is for those who may be in the same position...
And, yes...many of us are cursed/blessed with playa dreams...
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

@trilobyte - Thank you! I will check out the regionals board.
@jkisha - Hey!
@theCryptoFishist - There are so many things to bitch about and so little time!!!
@Savannah - Hi, thanks!
@Shambala - 52 works, I like B-Zero or B0 best
@maryanimal - thanks, so far I am having fun here
@lemur - Yea, but I heard that eplaya will be better than BM this year
@dragonpilot - thanks - I was going to wait until January to get my ticket in the main lottery, but I am starting to think that I should go ahead and jump into the pre-sale.
@misablue - Hi misa, thanks!
@gyre - I have never seen that truck before. I don't even buy gas at Shell - well maybe once or twice - but I almost never go there. Definitely not that particular Shell - I am pretty sure that I have never been there. That looks like it was just an accident anyway. Probably has nothing to do with someone trying to bring a truckload of gear into playaspace.

Well, he missed the guy in the red car by a little bit.
Just missed the pumps and didn't kill anyone.
He did knock those drinks over really well.
