Are there any Opthamologists going to Burning Man?

Post by tpc » Fri Aug 27, 2004 2:37 am

Hey y'all,

I've got an eye inflammation that requires me (at the moment) to put an eye drop in my eye every hour (which I'm nervous enough I'll start missing once I hit playa). My opthamologist has been seeing me 1-2 times a week to check on the progress - every time he keeps telling me just to keep putting the eye drops in, but he's making sure it's not getting worse (it's getting better slowly), since it could permanently screw my vision.

Anyway, he thinks me going without seeing someone for 2 weeks (I go up this Sat, coming back on Labor Day) is a really, really bad idea, but I don't really want to leave midweek to go to an eye doctor in reno and come back.

So any opthamologists going to BM who can give me a midweek once over and say "you are okay, keep putting eye drops in" or "get your arse out of here and to a equipped doctor pronto before you loose your vision"? I have Blue Cross CA PPO.

Thanks

I don't know if there's an opthamologist on-playa with the Emergency Services Department. I'm guessing that if you drop by one of the med tents soon after you arrive and explain these things they will be able to have an answer by the time you need the check up. I'm sure that there will be opthamologists at the event, but they may all be incognito. If ESD is able to help, insureance is not an issue--part of the ticket price.
Also, call the clinic in Gerlach. They do work with burners (quite nice people too) and if you call ahead and find out if they can check it for you. It won't be a specialist, but my guess is that as they do a whole lot of basic medicine for the locals that they are very good generalists. Check with them about insurance and hours of operation at that time. At least you're not going to Reno. And if you do have to, maybe they can point you to a good doctor.
If you have to go off playa for a medical reason, you can go to the Center Camp medical tent tell them the situation and you can get a pass exempting you from the re-entry fee. Consider talking to your camp or neighbors and make it a gifting run--pick up some produce, ice-pops and beer and little things forgotten. This way your absence becomes a reconnection to the event.
Or maybe you'll find someone qualified to check through this venue.
Is the doctor going to be able to see progress or not without having seen it before?
Good luck
