This is Hardhat here. 2011 was my virgin year. What drew me was the large scale art and larger creativity. My partner and I had talked about going to burning man for years before 2011. We talked about it and tried to get some friends on board but none of them could ever commit. How could you do a Google image search for Burning Man, look at those pics and not want to go? I really don't understand people that say "I can’t camp for 7 days". What? You can’t endure the desert for 7 days to experience the best that the world has to offer as far as people, art and positive experiences? It blows my mind. But I’m done trying to convince anyone that they should go. If you are on the fence about it you probably shouldn't go.
I try to think back at what I had envisioned it like back then. You know, to imagine what it might be like before you ever get there. You can’t. Don’t even try if you haven’t been. It’s indescribable. Imagine there are no rules because there is no need for rules. Burners are smart enough, compassionate enough, sexy enough and generally just such beautiful people that the need for rules is missing. Missing, much like all the uneducated (non burners) people of the default world.
Im a Metal Fabricator by trade. I own a Fab shop in Tempe Arizona. So as you could guess im pretty inspired to build some art and bring it next year. I have a little bit of art already made that I will bring in 2012 but I need to do more. The plan is to build an Art Car of some sort. Ive got a plan in my head I just need to find the platform to build it on. Im still looking for the donor vehicle and when I find it I will be working hard.
Burning man touched me in 2011 and I hope to be there in late August every year from here on out.

Hey Yellfire!
You may have found the link about Mutant Vehicles already, but here's a good place to start if you haven't.
http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/ ... s/dmv.html
I know little about vehicles of any kind, but I can tell you from witnessing past meltdowns on ePlaya that they're not kidding around with regards to the deadlines.
Or the mutation aspect.
Welcome.

Savannah,
Thanks for the info! And the welcome! I will check it out and read up.
Do you know if they offer grants for Mutant vehicles? I was told they don't.

Re: No rules
You're correct, they don't. From the "Art Grants" link on the art installations page:
http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_grants.htmlWhat we do fund:
* Interactive Art
* Art related to the theme, and art not related to the theme
* Mobile art - sculptures that move and do not resemble a car
What we do not fund:
* Activities or performances
* Domes, tents, teepees or stages
* Mutant vehicles
* Theme camps
* Anything illegal in the state of Nevada. While Burning Man is a private event, we are still governed by the laws of the state of Nevada.

Welcome to the ePlaya! Sounds like you had a great time, and you've got access to the tools and the know-how to make some fun, freaky stuff for next year! If you haven't already done so, try and connect with the Arizona Burners (regional group), a great bunch of people that are pretty active throughout the year.
I agree, it's tough to explain it to people. "To those who've never been, no words can explain it. To those who have, no words are necessary." I'm convinced that the event is in many ways so far beyond what people consider possible that you can't describe it without sounding as if you've lost your mind. "…and there was this 50 foot trojan horse! Then on Friday hundreds of people pulled it across the desert, and then they set it on fire with flaming arrows!…" or "….so we cruised around for a while on the Death Star for about an hour…." or "…there was this pier…"

Hey Yellfire! Man, I know what you mean ... 2011 was my first burn ... I've been like some fucking lunatic since I got back, talking about BM all the fucking time! I'm trying to persuade my friends here in the UK to attend 2012 ... only one has bitten and is committed.
It's simple : either people "get it" after 5 minutes, or they don't and never will. Even the "Look you twating fucktard, I'll buy you a fucking ticket, use my air-miles to get you to/from San Fran, you can share my ride, eat my food, drink my beer, piss in my water bottle" approach didn't work .... answer : "I'm not sure I can take the time" ... What .... the .... FUCK!!!!
Funx.

Exactly!
I've now seen the light ... I'm now saying "If you are thinking of coming to BM, don't! I've heard it will be crap this year." (This way, I get more chance in the lottery ... tee hee ...)
Oh and by the way, the teepee was awesome on the playa ...

Triobyte,
Me and my girl did attend a AZ Burners virgin party just to get a feel for what we would need and to be prepared. It was good and Im glad we went.
Loved the Pier the Horse and the Death Star. There's a moment when you just stop and get off your bike and go "how the fuck do you explain this to somebody"?

Several of my friends have told me that I am banned from discussing burningman again until they have gone. I don't follow instructions well and i'm obsessed so its not working out too well for them.

I'm there with you tamarakay! I'm obsessed myself. My kids are getting sick of me talking about it. People who've never heard of burning man (how could anyone not know of Burning Man?), look at me like I'm a few marbles short! But who cares eh? hehehe I know my one son Christian would love to go! I'll have to ask him if he wants to go.tamarakay wrote:Several of my friends have told me that I am banned from discussing burningman again until they have gone. (sorry i'm late)
Trying to explain it is one of my favorite parts!
After getting back our first year, we had no idea how to explain things I saw. So from now one, when I see something I stop and actually think "How am I going to explain this" that way when I get home, I have a bit better idea what to say.
Thats what we love to hear!Yellfire! wrote:Burning man touched me in 2011 and I hope to be there in late August every year from here on out.

Very very important rule!
The only exception I would make to this rule, is a terrible case of food poisoning. If you can't go 30 minutes with out shitting or puking, your sweating your ass off, and look white as a ghost.... you can use the RV toilet.

Im obsessed too. I found the decompression to be very hard for me which i didn't expect. Oh the wishing I was home again was torture. It has cooled off now and im back to the default world but I still want to go home and I cant wait. The planning needed for the second year seems too much to handle. How will we get it all done to make our participation the best it can be?
I find myself talking about it so much that Im sure my friends are sick of hearing about it but come August they will understand......I hope. No they WILL understand. They are kind understanding compassionate loving people and not dicks.
I want to burn for ever.

Glad to have another metal head in the mix. I have a fab shop in Hayward California, and have brought both large art and mutant vehicles to BM the last few years. If you saw two intertwined roses out on the playa this year those were made by my wife and I. You can see them in my icon. As far as bringing an MV, it is getting harder and harder to get one in as greater numbers every year want to do it. You will get an application off the BM website that you will have to fill out in great detail. Have a real design (with pictures) of your MV ready for them to review. My best piece of advice is to stress the INTERACTIVE abilities of your MV. If it is a large one, will you carry people on it (a plus). If it's a small one, what will it do? BM discourages small "personal use only" MV's so find something that will allow it to interact. My wife Lisa and I cruise our "Interaction Deli Truck" everywhere and do spontaneous bits with playans that can range from crazy races to improv. We also offer rides to anyone who needs them. Any art is welcome, but if you want placement you will also need to apply. And BM is fantastic in having the equipment and manpower to help set it up. Enjoy and see you out there!!!
