WASHINGTON -- The United Nations envoy for freedom of expression is drafting an official communication to the U.S. government demanding to know why federal officials are not protecting the rights of Occupy demonstrators whose protests are being disbanded -- sometimes violently -- by local authorities.

Destroying property is not protesting..

OPDX marched the side walks in a demonstration of what, No one has figured out yet.. No problem until some one pushed a cop (on traffic control) in front of a moving bus.. No problem until some one though a fire works that burned and sent a cop to the hospital.. and a few other little things.. Overall three people were arrested along a day long march.. Three more were arrested for trespassing and not leaving privet property.. All of these arrest were made in front of a camera.. One female broke rank and charge and pushed a cop.. For that she got pepper sprayed when she would not back down.. What the fuck you exspect? The cops should hand out roses already??

I don't know enough about Mao to say anything, but Stalin was a bad lot from his teen years. (That sentence makes me think we're dealing with straw men here, but whatever.) But Russia was a basket case in the early 20th Century. And the tsarists and white russians lost because they refused to look at and correct the horrors of the old regime.
China was pretty stressed by the 1940s, from what I know.

were you to put my above quote in context, you'd see not straw men....you'd see me analogizing regarding a statement by Dougly, regarding how congresspeople are or were "good" until money/power corrupted them.
you'd see my analogy, as hyperbolic, for clarity, but, the point was "sure, every one is good, until they're bad".

It's sort of embarrassing when over-seas news is reporting on our police state.

Speaking of which, did you hear that GWB has canceled a speech in Switzerland because he's afraid of being arrested and prosecuted? That was a nice piece of my daily Schadenfreude.

(yes, I realize that that's a little simplistic. however, in a broad sense, I don't think that's a bad thing to move towards. One of the best things about the burn is that people are doing what they want, not what they feel obliged to. Yeah, yeah, vacation. Still, there are horrid vacations)

i agree with #1, i think most of us do.... the question is, what is "filthy, sucking-the-lifeblood-out-of -the-rest-of-the-country rich"? to some around here, it seems to be what i would call the middle class. i seriously doubt that a tax increase on people making $1M/year or more would cause repercussions at the ballot box for any politician.

as for #2 ,,,,, i agree, but .... while a job is a big part of life, but there are other things in life as well .... houses, kids, travel, retirement, &c. a lot of people - myself among them - will tolerate a boring-as-fuck job for a little security. others will work their asses off and save their money to get a nice house or car or education for their kids. who can say that's wrong? or that someone who works extra hard to make a little more money should have to pay a ridiculous amount of taxes? those selfish people who want to buy a decent house near a major city like NYC or LA or SF, shame on them.

That is the closest you have come to rational thought in this entire thread. I really can't find any major points in your post that I disagree with.

That didn't stop the moneyed elite 50 years ago when the top tax bracket was 90% (not that I think it should be that high).

What you imply is that there is certain financial reward if one simply makes the effort and that has never been the case. The reality is that corporate theft and takeover happens all the time. There are lots of companies who do nothing more than try to steal the work of innovators like myself for their own personal advantage using their wealth and their army of lawyers trying to stick you with obscure details in laws written decades ago that no longer serve the purpose they were intended for. The irony is that all I was trying to do was survive on my own without having to work for someone else. I am well known in my section of the software field and when I had breakthrough success in my area about 5 - 6 years ago, carpetbagger corporations tried to scoop my work and the market that I had developed. Finally one of those companies after I refused their hiring attempts multiple times, tried to sue two time zone researchers / programmers (who supplied the world of UNIX / Linux, IBM, HP, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, and the BSDs (Apple / Mac OSX, Isilon / EMC, Juniper)) in order to try to put me out of business (by making software updates impossible). The suit had a side effect that they didn't intend which was that it infuriated and nearly crippled the world of UNIX for a few days as a result a few weeks ago. It is a copyright trolling suit that has no merit and has backfired because ICANN took over management of the time zone database. This database is important because time zone information is necessary for your iPhone's and iPad's to work correctly due to the fact that the encryption uses this info to generate hash's. Coincidentally, the lawsuit broke the day after Steve Jobs died.

It is because of this and related BS that I spend a good portion of the time living out in the desert (homeless) so that I have the resources to fight off "law for money" grabs by brain-dead greedy merchants with no imagination and no talent other than a knack for screwing others using the letter of the law. One of the reasons for the increasing economic imbalance is because there is too much money in the wrong hands; by those willing to use it for "corporate sport" lawsuits just to damage their competition rather than trying to make the world a better place by creating something. They damn near succeeded in putting me out of business, but I'm still kicking.

Nope not saying that at all. But your statement seemed to indicate that it also didn't have any history in our country--and the Boston Tea Party was definitely a protest (famous, no less) that involved destroying property in protest.

You want to set the rule.. So what do we have here?? "You are" going to judge whice laws to break??

The tea party did not destroy the 99%'s property now did it??..
They went right to the horses mouth. This is some thing occupy has fail to do from the start..

Starting a fight with the police and whining about how they beat you up

I hired that cop to enforce the law I asked for.. That cop orders you to obey a law and you refuse.. It is the cops duty to use force necessary to compel you to obey..

Do not try to tell me I do not know what protest is.. I was on the front line against strike breakers (with baseball bat in hand) when the AFL-CIO formed the United Steel Workers.. Back when they would blow you front porch off I was a union rep.. Now I'm part of the 99% that want to know WTF dose occupy want??
Communism? If so they are going to do a better job than what so far
