Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
Pretty good list but:
Get a combo lock for bike so you cant lose the key. Even better get one that you can set the combination and set it to the last 4 digits of your phone number so you cant forget it.
Chapstick - mine turned to mush in the heat. We had some rite aid brand lip care that held up well and is spf 30 too.
Also, didn't see a grey water container on your list.
Edited for spelling.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
I will have the empty water jugs for my gray water. The bike lock thing. I have a U lock and a THICK cord that goes with it. I am bringing my only bike with so taking good care of it. I spent a nice amount on it and it is long and wide to fit my tall fat ass. I cant do normal bikes they hurt my ass and are to short and the ergonomics of most kill my back.
The lock or cord cant be cut unless you are using a blow torch.
This is very similar to it. I also have 3 keys.

Work gloves!! thanks for the reminder
Sorry I copied this from my Word document so it has some little memos on it .
Also anyone know cheapest place to get smokes from the route of iowa to black rock city?

I would take a hammer to help with the rebars. The ground can be really hard. Helps pull out the stakes more easily too.

That is true I have done the tubes and packers. Might have to consider that. Only downside.. the tobacco get really dry near the end of the can.
Yep hammer is on the list (mental one) sorry.

That's why you leave a piece of lemon or orange rind in the can.. Keeps it moist the entire time and gives it a good flavor as well.tattoogoddess wrote:That is true I have done the tubes and packers. Might have to consider that. Only downside.. the tobacco get really dry near the end of the can.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
Buy the refill size of baby wipes, and put that bag inside a Ziploc (slider) bag. This way if you accidentally leave the original bag open an inch, the outer bag when easily zipped closed will help keep your wipes from drying out.
Boxes of wipes tend to dry out by the end of the week. You can rehydrate wipes, but they don't seem as good when you do.

Yeah, I did that last year and it kicked ass. My friend would also use soda water + ice, for an extremely refreshing drink (I normally don't like soda water because of its weird taste).junglesmacks wrote:That's why you leave a piece of lemon or orange rind in the can.. Note that WD40 is a water-displacing spray, not so much a lubricant. You might consider some bike grease if you want your chains to remain oiled. Remember to bring a rag to wipe it into the chains too.
Another thing for your bike: green goo puncture repair. We bring a bottle every year, and hopefully will end up just using the one we have this next year.

Bring a good repair kit for the air mattress. Not fun when they go flat.

Marc at Black Rock City Hardware swears by this kind of bike wax for dusty, dirty conditions. (Note: it should only be used on a chain that's clean to begin with). The same company makes several kinds; but the "Clean Ride" is the one Burners should apparently use.BBadger wrote:Note that WD40 is a water-displacing spray, not so much a lubricant. Yessss.
Dry chain lube is perfect for the Playa. If you use a wet lube like Tri-Flo, or ATB (my personal fave, for everywhere else) it will attract dust and stick to it.

Oo, I've heard about that stuff (forgot the name though). I'll stick that in my Amazon wishlist.Savannah wrote:Marc at Black Rock City Hardware swears by this kind of bike wax for dusty, dirty conditions. Other shit to remember:
- Multiple headlights. Yeah, you'll have your main trusty one, but it's nice to have them just hanging around in case you really need them. I also carry a flash light.
- A Nalgene booze bottle. Cups are nice, screw-lid Nalgenes are even nicer.
- Pump-spray bottles (like these) for washing dishes.
- Cast iron skillets (naturally non-sticking if seasoned).
- Insulated cooler. Not just a cooler, but an INSULATED one so you don't eat through ice like we did. Bring some bricks or wood to elevate it off the playa (I am now a believer of this after much naysaying).
- Canned air to dust out your goggles and camera and stuff
- Carribeaners to hold shit down in your bag.
- GOOD camping chairs. Those shitty collapsible ones with the drink holder SUCK and hurt your back. Don't you dare fall asleep in one lest you be so sore you can't even get up. Get a folding one at least.
- GOOD duct tape. Do not buy some shitty "National Brand" bullshit duct tape. Buy the high quality 3M/Scotch duct tape. Every time that cheap ass shit rips down the middle you'll be cursing that brand's name.
- A box with a lid to just "toss" shit into so you don't forget it. I had one near my tent and anytime I needed some place to just toss things like used batteries, headlights, spoons, etc. it was there. It may get messy but at least you know where shit is.
- If you're arriving at the start of the week before the streets are really defined, get some more lights to demark your territory, at the very least so people don't think the gap in the middle of your block is a road. Yellow tape may blow away, etc.
- Nail clippers (not just toe-nail clippers): you'll have hang nails galore.
- A multi-tool. Sometimes you need to twist wires, etc.
- Mechanic's wire. Cheap, strong, nice spool of wire.
- A ball of twine. Twine is cheap and versatile. We used it to keep our tarps from getting ripped due to wind.
- Work gloves (as mentioned before), and warmth-gloves while riding at night.
- Extra jacket, leg warmers for those 5 AM nights.
- Not supplies: designating a "call" sound (we used "caw caw!") so that you can alert others in your group that they need to slow down (like when my shoe laces got caught in the pedals).
- Bring or buy ANYTHING that you think might make your existence there more comfortable. That means extra juice drinks, extra tables, coolers, snacks, hardware, pillows, etc. If you have to you can give it away, but it sucks when you sit there thinking "well shit, I should've brought more of <that>."
- Bring more gum than you think you'd normally use. Get one of those Costco packs or one of those little gum jars. Get good chewy gum, not that shit that liquifies in your mouth. I literally spat some of that liquifying gum out and it was like I sneezed in the garbage. Mints are nice too.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
How many people are in the camp? I ask because you said you weren't planning on bringing a sun shower because the camp has one. If you are planning on taking a hot shower, I strongly suggest you bring your own. They don't hold enough water for more than one shower, so after the first person uses up all the hot water, it's either a cold shower or wait until the next day for the sun to heat up water again.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
Solar shower takes 1/2 a day or less. Maybe just a couple hours if positioned correctly like on the hood of a car in direct sunlight. Only hang it up when using it for showering. Leaving it hung up all the time will cause it to break within a couple days.
I used to use clean cooler water from my beverage cooler to fill my shower bag. I'd fill it with ice cold water in the morning when I restocked the cooler with ice and by the time I wanted to shower in the late afternoon I'd have to set the bag in the shade on the playa to cool down so I wouldn't get burnt. Now I have an RV so propane and my bitchen water tank takes care of all that for me.
I like tennis balls for topping rebar. Cut it where the brand name is so you always know where the hole is(stanley knife with a new blade). Doesn't require taping to the stake like water bottles do so they don't moop. If the brand name is wilson you have to softly call the name Wiiilllllssssoooonnnnn as you slice in to the ball. Trust me. It's fun.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
Oh I forgot to include in my last post.
Air mattresses are heat sucking vampires when the out side temperature is cold. You will need as much insulation or more under you protecting you from the mattress than you will need for covers. One of those egg shell type foam mattress toppers will do the trick perfectly and you can secure it to the mattress with a sheet. In the event your mattress fails and you have no back up bed near bye you can double up the egg shell mattress cover for some modicum of comfort.

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?
Solid list and advice so far. A couple of minor things that I would recomend...
Tent
Bring an extra sheet of large size to cover the entirety of your bed.
I say this in case a brutal dust storm fills yer tent with dust. Think of it as a condom for your bed. This way you can gently roll the top sheet off your bedding and have a clean bed within an other wise super dusty tent. I learned this by accident one year and will always have one with me. In fact i tend to cover all y stuff inside my tent before heading out for any prolonged adventure.
Besides having an extra sheet also provides an inviting spot to sit out in deep playa
Helpers
Antacid (tums / rolaids etc)
Imodium A-D
It is just a good idea to have an arsenal to protect your digestive system whether you need them or not
