Baking Pizzas on La Playa
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with an actual oven, or solar oven that would work to make pizzas in a semi timely fashion. if theres another thread with this info a link would be greatly appreciated.
Also, not related but a side question. if im just camping at BM with some friends, and want to have a camp fire and roast some smores, what kind of precations or other prep should i do ahead of time to prevent moop or other problems. i plan to bring a fire pit device so it wouldnt be in direct contact with the playa.
Thank you ahead of time!

Pizza for quick cooking and a crispy bottom likes 400+ F. Most solar ovens are lower. But suggest consulting the experts at the Alternative Energy Zone - ae-zone.org. A concentrating solar dish on a heavy bottom plate in the oven could be cool(hot!).

There are many doughs that are not goopy that can be put right on a bbq grill.
I often have pizza while camping.

Risky, have to try that! Is the grill covered to melt the toppings? (Grill-top temps near coals are quite high)

Easy to put a pizza stone on the grill for the right crust texture.

I've seen hamburgers grilled on hot fenders. Why not pizza?

There have been at least 2 pizza places that I know of on the playa (Pizza Smut, which was randomly delivered in a porn covered box; and another one who never delivered to us). Not sure how they cooked it, but it was a lovely surprise to get. All of which just means that it can indeed be done.

I have a folding bbq. So yes, I close the top to keep the heat in to melt the cheese.some seeing eye wrote:Risky, have to try that! Is the grill covered to melt the toppings? (Grill-top temps near coals are quite high)
Google search has many results. Here's one:

they looked really crappy, to be honest..

I remember talking to one of the founders of that camp, and I believe he said they were using solar ovens for the pizza.Eric wrote:Pizza Smut, which was randomly delivered in a porn covered box
Re: Baking Pizzas on La Playa
cast iron pan.. +lid (cast iron would be great)... maybe even a cast iron 'dutch oven'
these are great.
you can put it right on the fire..
go to center camp cafe, put it on the cauldron in front of the cafe.. cook a pizza....
that fire is always going.. and has wood nearby.. dont let that heat go to waste

Re: Baking Pizzas on La Playa
I found one camp that brought their own pizza oven out there (can't remember if it was wood or propane). They were going to give me some, but I came back at the wrong time

Re: Baking Pizzas on La Playa
We had a wood-fired brick oven at our camp (Eridu Society), and one of our campmates operated the "Space & Thyme" temporal pizza delivery service. She did random deliveries to people on the playa, and had a lot of fun with the time travel schtick. "Here's the pizza you ordered!" "I don't remember ordering any pizza" "Sure you did. Next Tuesday!" etc. Thank goodness we weren't on a lot of peoples' radars - while she had to have made over a hundred of them, people kept coming around to camp awkwardly asking for pizza.
There was another camp on the dial (whose name I can't recall) who did a propane-fired steel box oven - some of their people came by to say hi and chat with my campmate (probably figuring out delivery areas haha).

Re: Baking Pizzas on La Playa
I would bring the already-been-fixed doughs in the wrappers. Goop on the shit and put it on a BBQ. That would be real close to a pizza. 'Less you really have a cravin' for the real, hand tossed dough. I just see big, moopie mess. And lots of water for cleanup. I'm too simple on the playa. Too much work. But either way, sounds delicious... Would, really would, like a slice...

I would be glad to supply testers for your pizza.
Or should it be testees in keeping with this year's theme, lame as it is...
You could also have a "Nuts To You" BBQ calf nut pie with a speedy on-demand delivery service, "We come on command!"

Re: Baking Pizzas on La Playa
I have made pizza every year at Burning Man. By far and away, the most successful pizza nights were basically Stone Soup nights. I made the dough and sauce and told everyone in advance to bring whatever toppings or cheese they wanted. A 7 cheese pizza with jalapeno infused asparagus tastes like ambrosia on the playa. Same with a onion, green pepper, tuna, corn, and mayo pizza.
I pretty much just use a grill, or a large frying pan, but I would like to bring one of these little bad boys to the playa one year:

(I was making pizza last weekend, just happened to have this pic handy)
Solar ovens are great, but not for pizza. I usually make lasagna in one (thanks Bernie). It takes 4-6 hours and also comes out awesome for playa food. If you are grilling pizza, you will never get the dough cooked all the way through just throwing it on the grill. It is a 2 step process:
Cook all your toppings in advance (saute the shrooms, onions, and/or chicken)
1. Roll out the dough (or better yet, press it out and toss it in the air)
2. Brush it with olive oil
3. Throw the oiled side on the grill.
4. Cook until you see bubbles on top and the bottom gets brown around the thinner spots
5. Take off the grill, flip and sauce the cooked side
6. Put cheese and toppings on and throw it back on the grill
In 3-5 minutes, you have a pizza.
