I only want to meet people at random, then only after having got to know them realize I know them on ePlaya.

I have this illusory knowledge bias: I think I know what someone is like from a few hundred posts — often totaling less than 3,000 words. So I only know a little tiny bit about them but I think I know what they're like. For most people, I can change my opinions about them quickly once I start talking with them.

But when it's turned around, I get kind of upset about people believing I'm a certain way. And worse if it's an opinion formed based on one post I wrote 5 years ago — not only is that not enough to judge me on, it was written by someone who is not who I am now.

But that's the fun part! I love the illusory knowledge! To find out how far off I have been about people. Unfortunately (or should I say fortunately) more often than not, I like the impression of people I have in my head than what they really turn out to be.

And it's almost always fascinating and funny what people think about me. What I think is obvious about me, is not and what is not, is... (sorry, this post is caffeinary reaction)

I agree. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a psychologist, and she was talking about how we see ourselves as behaving differently in different context, but have a tendency to categorize the behavior of others just by viewing them in a single context.

People behave very differently on message boards, especially semi or fully anonymous message boards. People also behave differently on the playa. I don't think that you truly start to understand a person until you have observed them in lots of different aspects of their lives - online, on the playa, at work, around family, around friends, etc...

So I think that you could read 100,000 posts where a person goes on and on about personal details, and yet still be completely shocked when you meet them in real life.

I would like to meet some of the more prolific posters for this reason - just for the shock of seeing how different they are.
