lets haves big burns EVERY night if we run out of stuff to burn we can use the sound camps instead or just stack frat boys in pile and burn them!
leave tuesday, i like seing the city dissapear, i would love to get there first and leave last, that would be an awesome experience

Purgatory for people that arrive at the gate early before it's open at midnight. They stack it full, and then it's last in first out to clear it.

In other words, don't arrive early.. just time it to be at the gate as close to after midnight as you can. No loitering on the side of the highway, either.. that's super dangerous. If anything, pause at the Walmart in Fernley until about 10-11pm and then drive in.

I spent Sunday night in Reno and drove in in the afternoon. It still took a couple of hours to get in. I recommend having congential company.
The gates open at midnight on Monday and it takes a long time to process the people who are coming in at that time. Factors include, but are not limited to, number of people in vehicle, how tired the driver is, how loaded the car is, how far have you driven, can you afford a hotel in Reno (not an expensive room when you think of how many casino/hotels there are), shopping in Reno, time of flight in/out, and so on.

Doc, that would be just perfect for 2013, i would plan to stay with the MOOP people it would be cool this year but i already have cool plans in place. If my new better paid job does work out to be better paid i could probably afford the 3/6 month stay over there i would love to do. when do the first people get to home?

the ranch is a year round operation, i believe, there is a small group of folks who stay the winter to make sure it doesnt all go to shit.

more work probably starts gearing up and getting more active round feb/march.. maintenance/inventory of what you got/what you need mostly, id presume..

playa stuff is later in the season.. most work in nevada is likely happening at the ranch in the form of work weekends for the various departments until very late july/early august when the dpw people start surveying the city and do the golden stake thing.

lets say part of july, august, september and midway through october.. is the season where one might be able to be on playa (if only during your time off) while doing some work for burning man

(i dont know any of this first hand.. im not a dpw person)

I take it that the DPW I so thoroughly enjoyed watching try to blatantly steal and assault people for alcohol is not representative of the group as a whole then? Surly nothing could ever be organized and built by such a rag tag group of wasted hobos as I saw in 2011.

not every person wearing DPW logos is a DPW person...

youd be surprised how eager a person from dpw might be to trade you his shirt for your booze.

There is a bit of traffic engineering dogma that applies here.
The relationship between number of cars and traffic speed is linear to a point. More cars slow things down etc...
But at some point it becomes exponential. Number cars rises to a critical level and tolerable-slow traffic suddenly drops to a crawl.

Exodus has been beyond that point for several years. Each year (with 2009 exception) we get ~5% more cars. We are already at the point where an accident nearly 100 miles away on I 80 resulted in 8 hours waits in the exodus line.

2012 will have ~5% more cars than 2011. The result is laughably predictable to any traffic engineer.

I would plan now to leave at any other time than Monday.

Nothing other than staggering the days that people may exit will solve the current problem. I don't see BM adding lanes to 90 miles of road.

This is also the key reason why BM will never grow to the stated 70,000 people. The local roads can't handle the current load. Local communities are basically shut down for days. Emergency vehicle access is delayed. The number of accidents and dead vehicles goes up every year....

It will be very interesting to see how this problem gets solved. Pulsing saves fuel but does not speed anything up.

Another problem is that all the vehicles are packed full of both people and gear. We really can't ask people to share rides because we already are maxed out on that score.

Plus people need to bring tons of stuff. We can't just organize a bus lift.

Interesting problem.

I am sure someone with systems design expertise can come up with an effective solution. And as most system design problems, it's all about number, number and numbers.
What would be really interesting is to scale up the issue and view how the cities, towns manage their traffic. We take it for granted how the community we live in operate. It's take a lot of engineering/planning to come up with solutions to issues of this magnitude.
