Helmet Talk
Helmet Talk
I would like to hear about wearing helmets on the playa: practical advice, pros and cons of different hardhats and helmets, cool helmet designs and artwork, and stories involving helmets.

Re: Helmet Talk
This thread could take some interesting turns. That's all I have to say about that.

Only good helmet looks that come to mind are Cary Grant in Gunga Din, and Marvin the Martian.

Re: Helmet Talk
I brought my M-40 out to the playa a couple years. Great shade, but got hotter than hell, to the touch.

This is my next project...

Re: Helmet Talk
I heard of a DOT approved horned helmet. Instead of working today, why don't I google it?

Thanks!
I admit it . . . I like the outfit on the left. Mostly for the helmet, but one doesn't want to clash.

A Polar Kool Max system might add some, er, *enhancements* to that bikini.

This guy is my new inspiration:

He apparently does this at bike races. He doesn't even have a bike - he just runs with that massive rack.

Re: Helmet Talk
I once used this style of helmet as the basis for a Very Large hat. (Sorry, no pictures available.) I pop-riveted a steel wire armature to the helmet, and covered the armature with cloth. This style of helmet fits better than a regular bicycle helmet, so weight and wind is less of a problem.5280MeV wrote:
Do beware of the weight of any large headgear. My hat was so heavy I had to move my head very carefully to manage the inertia. Also, beware of heat inside any headgear on the Playa in daytime.
Now build a cool helmet!

Re: Helmet Talk
Not sure about this... Antlers are wayyyyy heavier than I imagined.
It is also real easy to smash into walls, doors can be an issue, very tricky overall and helmet sort of wobbles around a lot. Not good for dancing.
The metal piece the antlers are screwed/epoxied to can be easily detached and reattached to the helmet.
Looks exactly how I wanted it to by day. Now needs sparkly lights.
