I was wondering about webcams too. This will be the first Burning Man I'll be missing in a few years because my wife had a baby last month. Kinda weird knowing that as I write this my friends are coming on and tripping around the Esplanade and wherever else. As technologically cutting edge as Burning Man is I'm surprised there aren't lots of webcams being run by different camps. I'm guessing the hurdle comes in getting a wireless connection to work on the playa. Last year, after I came home I hopped onto the BM site and watched a broadcast from near center camp for a couple days. I saw the slow dismantling and trucks driving away bit by bit.
I know they try to broadcast the burn but invariably that hits technical snags.

I was wondering too if there would be more then 1 cam up this year. Hopefully soon the 1 will be up. The cam last year had some problems too so maybe it is being saved or upgraded. Looking forward to seeing all the goings on & off, lol...whooa..^congrats on your new baby!

Thanks Lawcat :D It occured to me after I wrote my post last night that it might also be an issue of bandwith. If hundreds or thousands of people are trying to access a view of the same cam at the same time there could be problems with a server or provider. Anyone here know anything about that?

It looks kinda windy. I can sorta make out the man himself in the middle of the screen. The changing graphics are a nice touch.

The webcam is up now and it's great to hear all the distant drums and yelps. They keep an external mic going but have also added in a feed from a dj (Black Rock radio?) and at the moment they're piping in the sound of some goofballs bickering on walkie-talkies, trying to find each other. If that weather report is right it's windy and kinda cold, which is a bummer. I've always been a little more sensitive to cold when I trip or roll...

2004 Playa Broadcasts

Hi - I read your post and I am in a similiar situation. I have a 3-month old myself and I have been out to the playa the last three years. I have been searching in vein to find any broadcasts or feeds from the playa. I have found one site that appears to have posted a blog from the playa and they say they will update later this week with a webcam feed.

http://roam.igargoyle.com/

I am listening to the live broadcast off the burningman.com home page - which is definitely better than silence - but you would think that there is something else out there.

Please post if you find any 2004 live broadcasts

I was part of Pinkys (which always set up around 8:30 and about the 4th or 5th ring in). This is the first year there will be no Pinkys which is a bummer because it kept getting larger and larger each year (at a peak cost of around $9,000. Ouch!). Anyway, a lot of my prior experience was serving and playing there. Also an assortment of drugs, bike riding, exploration, sexualizing, a lot of water, occasional sleep, giddiness, bliss, laughing, dancing, but never any singing. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

Yeah the live cast from the BM.com webcam is all green for me to, and pretty choppy.

I take that back. It's working for me now and I realize that I shouldn't have looked at it, I'm back into being sad that I'm not there now that I can see it going on in realtime... :)

anyone know the location of where the BM webcam is located at? the cam is up now but no sound-bandwidth is a bitch sometimes, but hey all is good  the CB radio chatter last night was hella funny as well as the music that was intertwined with the video feed.

Yeah I have been searching for other webcams up too for a couple days. Technology heads would be all over that unless they got a better invite for other things to do..lol..

I did find this on LAburners web forum but no video yet-cool music-they say they provide the cast but, hmm.

I think that it's Center Camp that I see about 150yards off in the background...

You can see center camp to the right, and at night I could (barely) make out the man in the center of the screen. It would make sense for them to center it on the man, so I'm guessing the camera is around 6:40ish, maybe first street in. I appreciate having any cam at all to look at, but I wish I could make out some detail. You can't distinguish any of the costumes or vehicles well. Still looks pretty windy too!

First of many attempts made yesterday yet I remain unable to connect with Playacast. Launched Quicktime & opened "rtsp://live.burningman.com/live.sdp" to veiw the webcast; its reads "Burning Man 2004 Streaming Video", it also reads "requested data" for several minutes then "-5408: Timed Out". Is the bandwidth log-jammed, am I doing something incorrect or what?

Nope. you're doing it right. The connection will timeout from time to time. you just have to keep trying.

Same thing happened last year. Too bad I'm not there now. I spent a ton of time and money getting a multicast together just for the event and I just could'nt make it this year.

Perhaps next year.

I manage to get access all the time luckily, and it plays quite neatly. Sometimes there is sound, sometimes there isn't, but yesterday i was fortunate enough to witness some pan views, and some zooming, on camps sites, on RVs, on ppl passing by and ob ppl on bike! It was so neat! It's a great way to get a true feel of what it's like, next best thing than being there I guess! lol

 yeah the good videos vibes have been good here too. I loved the pans & zooms too. watched the great interactions of still shots & live video. They are really mixing it up this year. Thanks again to all the playa cam folks! Neet way to get a little LIVE experience minus dust..lol 8) wish quicktime had better video properties to tweek the picture better, otherwise no complaints. I like the radio play along too- too funny.."poop patrol", "get lit", etc..lol and the music = PERFECT. :P

Anyone know if there's a way to hear just the radio, without the video feed?
