Burning Man for the over 50 crowd

Conversations with other burners eventually always come around to how much I love getting to see my folks at Burning Man every summer. This usually results in people going, "Your parents go to Burning Man? That's so cool!"

Well, my father wants to let other people who are over 50 know how cool it really is. Seven year Burner and Lamplighter Alan "Perky" Markow, writes about what it is like to burn when you are over 50. Practical tips and how fun it really is out there, how to understand the culture, and how to participate and be a citizen of Black Rock City feature on his blog, Sunrise Burners. Check it out, show your folks, and then people will be telling you how cool your parents are for going to Burning Man :).

Great site! I'll be sure refer you when I see someone 50 or older introduce themselves. :)

Although frankly, like most Burner blogs, I think there's stuff there for everyone.

Thanks, the blog is great! His and and I are "50 something's" ourselves, and our 30-year old daughter is a burner too. We don't camp together, but love hanging with each other on the playa! Will keep your dad's blog bookmarked and share with friends. Happy New Year!

JK, you are far from the high water mark for age in BRC. There are people TWICE your age roaming the playa. At least they look it. :shock:

Ya, I think I've seen some, but truly, I don't think I have ever met one. I came close last year at the M&G, but I was still a year older. :cry:

I've never subscribed to the principles of aging...of course I'm an immature doofus, but so far its worked so I figure until I'm ordered to grow up I see no reason to actually do it :D

My bloke will be 50 in April.. this means he will be part of this much coveted club...

We will be back on Playa in 2012... tix confirmed at pre-sales and the RV is booked from LA again...

A friend turned 60 on September 1st. We dressed her up as our birthday queen for the day and put a sign on her that said "Kiss me, it's my 60th birthday" - she wore the sign through the day and into the night, and birthday kisses were abundant :D We intend to make it a tradition..

One of the things I've appreciated about being on the playa is how little age matters. I've been 50 or more 12 times out there, and usually have been with groups that span generations, often within the same family. I've had campmates who were under 1 year old, and over 65 years old. The generational mix makes it feel like a true tribe, where every age gets to contribute and to learn. And when the fireworks go off, everyone gets to be an amazed child.

I'm with you doc...its the only expectation that I have going into my first burn...it's pathetic how western society is so consumed with youth and devalues experience and age.....

I just turned 54. I think this decade is the best yet. Lots of good changes.
Coming back home to California was a good move. Being closer to the Pacific Ocean,
SF, BRC & my family & friends out here, my new home...does my spirit well.
