epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
I got these boots super cheap at thrift store & they are great for the playa in all ways except one - the sole is coming loose over the heel.
big clunky lugged sole.
i only paif $5 for the shoes so i dont want to pay $35 to have them re-soled ust go trash them at burningman
so, 2-part epoxy? or gorilla glue?
im concerned that the flex factor might make epoxy not work...
what doi y'all think?

Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
GOOP. It was designed for shoes in the first place. (Original name was Shoe GOOP.) It's a soft glue, which means that it will flex with the movement of the soles.

You can also get contact cement from your neighborhood leather shop which works quite nicely.

Here ya go.
Clean the fuck out of that thing.
Get some BARGE CEMENT.
Paint both surfaces.
Let dry until tacky, but don't touch it!
Then put the two surfaces back together and clamp or weight them overnight.
Happy schlepping!

Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
I will second the BARGE cement. I work with a lot of furniture makers and it is what they use to glue leather for high wear situations. It is bulletproof.
Just use it in a well vetilated space (or wear a good chem rated respirator) the fumes from it can knock you on your ass, and not in a good way.

I have a similar problem with my 'day-to-day' boots. They are not going to playa, but still need to be fixed.
Where do you get the Barge Glue?
Can it be found at the local Big Box, or do I have to special order it?
Or maybe find some sorta craft store?

I've tried everything. Shoe Goo. Gorilla Glue. Epoxy 6000 or whatever that is. Five or six different bonding agents, for sticking shoe to sole, and have never found anything that works/lasts.

You need to follow the directions then.
E6000(which is WAY better than any of the GOOPs) is holding my girlfriend's workshoes together just fine, and she is a busy little waitress.
It is holding her fave playa boots together also, many years and still...
Goop is crap, go with E6000(avail at Walmart, ace, etc) or try to find the barge cement.

Not Following Instructions or Not Cleaning Surfaces is crap...GOOP is GOOD. All of my crazy masks and helmets and outdoor artworks are GOOPed together and are essentially IMMORTAL. Some varieties have a UV stabilizer that helps with prolonged exposure in playalike conditions although I generally paint my stuff (it takes paint wonderfully) and that blocks UV too.oneeyeddick wrote:You need to follow the directions then.

What causes GOOP to fail is applying it to an oily/dirty surface where it can't grab hold, or using it in an anaerobic environment such as gluing a plastic bottlecap onto a smooth, nonporous surface... GOOP air-cures, and in fact putting your project in front of a fan (or in the case of Burning Man a 100-MPH wind) will help set up the GOOPy goodness in much less time.

So then wouldn't smashing it between a sole and a shoe be pretty damn close to anaerobic?robotland wrote:or using it in an anaerobic environment such as gluing a plastic bottlecap onto a smooth, nonporous surface... There would be some air flow, but not much.
At least I figure the idea is to get it really tight against the shoe.

You got a place near you that sells leathercraft supplies? Tandy or what not? Surely your SCA crew knows.C.f.M. wrote:I've tried everything. Shoe Goo. Gorilla Glue. Epoxy 6000 or whatever that is. And I have tried all the goops(marine goop is the best) in this manner, they all fall apart after one year, Marine goop held for almost 2 years> BUT! E6000 has held for 6 years now and the(anaerobic) surfaces that I use them one will rip before the E6000 will give up the ship.robotland wrote:Not Following Instructions or Not Cleaning Surfaces is crap...GOOP is GOOD. Plastic waterline attached to inflateable "squirtgun" on my MV is my point of reference FYI.
E6000 is very much like the Honey Badger in not giving a shit about the grease/dirt also, IE my girlfriends Boots which were glued on Playa several years ago without cleaning them at all, there is a playa patina in the glueline in fact.

Shoe Goo, Goop (many varieties), & E6000 are all made by the same company.oneeyeddick wrote:

Trust me, they work fine on shoes.
At work the jocks tried RTV, contact cement & all manner of nasty adhesives we had.
NONE worked as well as "Shoe Goo"
Don't know about barge cement. Stick with Goo/Goop/E6000 & you cant go wrong.
Just make sure its fresh. Stuff sitting around for years may not work.

Hides in Berkeley? NOOoooooooo. I'm fascinated. Tandy? You mean there are stores fully dedicated to animal hides. The closest thing that I see around here is Naugahyde. (I love that stuff) Cloth-backed plastic that I can sew.

You've never been in a Tandy? Piles and piles of hide, nothing smells like leather in heaps.
Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
I've never even heard of it. Northern California has specialty stores of plastic storage containers, natural yarn, hemp clothing, synthetic decor and everything is 'made without any real micro organisms being harmed'. I love meat, leather, real fur and all animals that I don't have to feed and water. I'm not trying to inflame any activists. (But they they do get tiring).

You can go to Micheal's and they sell leather thongs from Tandy. So even if you don't have a big store near you, you can still verify their existence if you care to.

Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
Ratty, you may want to try looking in a reasonably sized city. In SF, for example, SH Frank is probably the best place to go to (been around for over a century). They're in the mission, and have pretty much any kind of hide you could ever want, in just about any color. They also carry leatherworking supplies and some accessories. It's spendy, but amazing.
While not full-on hide houses, you can also get a limited selection of hides from another big fabric place in the mission (I can't recall the name, but believe it's on 17th and Mission), and a surprisingly good selection at Discount Fabrics' outlet store (they really stepped things up when they moved their HQ to the bigger location a few years back).

Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
I've probably walked right past it a few times. It would be fun to lace up some leggings or fashion a bra from scraps. I'll put it on my list for next trip to the city. Thanks.

There's one on Reno. Yeah, there's some pre-playa shopping!
You can also get a mail order catalog from them. Not the same as fondling hides in the shop though.
Someone torched the one in SLC a few years back.

Re: epoxy to glue sole back on boots?
As a kid who spent a lot time skateboarding, I destroyed my shoes at a much quicker rate than my mom was willing to replace them. I tried shoe goo and barge cement ... not to mention many other shoe life extending measures. At the end of the day, the repairs never worked for more than one session, if that
It sounds like others have had success using those items to extend shoe life, but I sure didn't.
