If you get there real early, you can see the playa in a state that you will never get a chance to see again. The nearly barren expanse will quickly be filled with hippies, RV's and blue plastic domes, so get a look at the bare dusty flat while you can.

Ran thru the nearly empty Terminal City hugging Eplayans and yelling YAY. Then unloaded the bike from the trailer, laid down, smoked a cigar, and fell into a fitful sleep.

Crack open a PBR and start getting the monkey hut up. Once there is shade, everything else is less urgent.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Re: What is the first thing you do?
After figuring which direction to set up camp, I hit the porto's, then back to the camp area and raise a beer and a Jameson shot to the playa, and then get down to getting the camp set-up. Which lasts till sunrise. Then try to get a bit of sleep.
What other people think about you is none of your business.

Re: What is the first thing you do?
2011 was my first burn.I got through the gates and drove in the general direction and had to stop and take it all in. I've was never in awe of something before in my life
I even arrived early. I cried tears of joy (either that or I was totally exhausted from the drive)! I couldn't believe I was there. I finally found the BDV&WB spot and there were a couple of campers. It was 3am and I decided to sleep in my packed small car...no dice. I met David across the street. What a nice guy! He let sleep in his supply tent. After 3 hours of restless sleep, I met Drew and his wonderful fiancée Mindy! LSS, I finally got my tent up with the help of my new burner friends, set up my site and took a nap. What a great beginning!
Everyone I met from the time I passed through the first gate (which I gifted s box of chocolate donuts), to the greeters (where I was welcomed with hugs and the ringing of the bell to announce I was a virgin), to my campmates, to people on the playa, they all hugged me and said, "Welcome Home ".

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Re: What is the first thing you do?
rain was 2010..
it wasnt the best.
it happened right around when most of the finishing up building the city work was happening pre-event.. and again the day of opened gates..
i hope for no rain and better weather than 2011 in 2012!

No I remember the rain in 2010 in the afternoon. I had been up all night getting there and passed out during while listening to it on the roof of the truck. I woke up to screams of "OMG ITS A DOUBLE RAINBOW!!!!"

Re: What is the first thing you do?
Motsky and I rolled in at 1:00am Saturday before Gates (in 2011) and there was a mild/moderate rain that began about 1:30am or 2:00am. It wasn't catastrophic, but I didn't want to set up my tent in it.
The rain Saturday night/Sunday morning in 2010--now THAT was some heavy rain. I pulled plastic over my cot and watched the rain bead up on the outside and roll down my tent. I'm agnostic, but I still prayed . . . "Please don't let me wake up soaked. Thank you. Amen."
1. Park
2. Meet Neighbors..offer Beer
3. Open my own Beer
4. Stare at my truck and figure where to start.
5. Set up camp..while drinking Beer and Water...unless someone gives me a Corona..kill two birds with one stone
6. Go out and say Hello to the Man
This pretty much sums it up for me. I add in 3.5- climb on top of trailer, take in the view of the playa, breath deeply and let the joy of being home again wash over me... then move on to number 4.
