RENTING AN RV - Availability
RENTING AN RV - Availability
Hi,
Im renting an RV for this years burning man and I read somewhere that it might be difficult to find one if you leave it to late.
I cant really book it at this stage as I don't have exact dates so Im wondering if in the past it has been difficult to find an RV to rent close to the date of the event. Probably wanting to rent it from Las Vegas.
Cheers,
Dylan

Yes.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

it seems it is best to organise now, but I guess one wants to know if they have tickets first!

The closer to the event (geographically) that you try to rent it, the earlier they are fully booked.
We waited until we bought tickets last year and the closest we could rent one was Salt Lake City which increased our fuel / mileage costs tremendously.
We found it to be an expensive waste though and this year we are bringing just a tent and shade structure.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Drawingablank is right- the longer you wait, the farther you will have to drive it (which is more expensive). It's probably too late for the SF Bay Area or Reno already, you might have luck in Sacramento or Vegas still. If you wait much longer you'll need to try Boise, Salt Lake City or even Phoenix.
I would suggest that as soon as you get notification that you got tickets in the drawing you start looking for your RV, or you look into box-truck camping at the event.

What's the penalty if you pull out and how much does that grow over time?

I'm not sure how it is with most RV rental places, but if I recall correctly Cruise America gives a full deposit refund up to 4 weeks from the rental date.

Depending on multiple things, might be worth it to put down a deposit and then if you know you're not going a few months in advance...
Or am I just making things worse?

Crypto,
It's more about NOT pulling out in time. In my experience they grow from about 19" to 5' 9" in about 19 years. YMMV

Re: RENTING AN RV - Availability
I'd reserve one now. If you don't get tickets, go to other California/Nevada attractions with the RV. It's nice.
Oh, but damn it. You have to reserve most camping places during the Labor day weekend. Overpopulation has its drawbacks.
You can always camp at Ocean Cove up above Bodega Bay. They never fill up. They'll make space if need be.

There's always the option of buying something affordable from Craigslist or wherever, if you plan on returning every year/often.
