Newbie leaving early - needs help with transportation issues
This will be my first Burning Man and I'm really excited. Due to time constraints, I am only staying until Friday morning/afternoon on Aug 31st and taking a flight out of Reno that day. I have been trying to research transportation options as far as leaving early and wondered if anyone had any good ideas... Right now it seems like I have 5 options:
1) find a shuttle to take me to Reno from Black Rock
2) find another group/person who is leaving on Friday morning for Reno also
3) have my friends go through the trouble of uprooting their vehicle from their campsite and drive me themselves
4) charter a plane for an exorbitant amount of money
5) bike to Reno...and risk death
Does anyone have any have any advice or know of someone I could catch a ride with? Or even a better idea? Your input would be much appreciated!

youll have zero problem finding a ride to reno from burning man.
just start asking around early in the week, and if worst comes to worst youd wait out by where the cars leave for the pavement flying a sign and get picked up in 5 minutes or so..
nearly EVERYONE is gonna go through reno on the way back.. you wont have trouble finding a spot..
even asking here you might be able to arrange one pre event, but if you dont.. dont worry..
getting to reno is simple.
ive gotten a ride to reno every year no problem..

one tip i might add.. that you mention wanting to leave burning man and take a flight on the same day..
i would AVOID doing this.
you dont want to have such a time limit, if possible.. it puts pressure on you and your ride..
its much preferable to be able to just get a room in reno for the night and then fly out the next day..
that way all you need to do is worry about getting to reno, some time, any time... on a specific day, without any deadline..
might not be convenenient to do but....., itd be what i would do.

Welcome!
It's a two hour drive to Reno. Lemur is right about giving you plenty of time to get to the airport.
There is no need to worry or panic now about a ride. Yes, there will be people heading out to the airport. As a last resort back up, you could have a camp mate available to drive you, but honestly that won't happen. You will see lots of neighbors packing up to leave on Friday.
Make your flight as late as possible.

Leaving Friday? That sucks. But look on the bright side: You can still make it to the Meet & Greet at Barbie Death Village at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Bring a bag of ice and, oh, say 12 beers. And a bottle of absinthe. And Goddamn it, bring something to eat. I would recommend lumpia. And bacon.

Why do people leave on friday...
Some people like the intimacy of the burn earlier in the week but hate the "frat boys" that start pouring on Thursday.
Some people have weddings on Labor Day weekend that they must attend.
Some people have to get to work on Tuesday in something like one piece, or maybe they have to be there on Monday.
Some people hate the hidious traffic jams that start on Saturday.

Amazing, not even on the playa and 6 months away from the burn and low and behold, the playa provides.

Start with the worst case scenario and work back from that.
What happens if you miss your time?
Does getting there an hour late, day late, three days late make a difference?
Now figure out plan A, plan B, plan C, and the obligatory "I don't care anymore" plan D.
Safe travels!!!
