Re: One Item for BM a Day
My new 12 volt LED rope lights and LED tail lights for the trailer arrived yesterday. Added to the 12 volt color changing LED light bars (IKEA) and 18 LED under counter white light bar, I have all LED lighting now.
The color changing bars and undercounter lights came with 120VAC transformers permanently attached to their cords. By checking the voltage of the transformers before buying (12 volts DC), I was sure they'd work simply by cutting the cords and wiring into the DC system (using switches of course).
I'm going to the electronics store to get switches today. I plan on getting push on / off switches to minimize the risk of accidental turn on. My second option is conventional toggle switches protected by flip-up covers as seen on weapons consoles in fighter jets.
I will probably be leaving the generator at home this year as I really don't need the air conditioner on the playa. It's nice but was nowhere near necessary last year.

Looks like my one item is just registering also.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Yesterday: Scored big with 15 glowstick bracelets for a dollar (I bought 5 packs) at a local art store's sale. Tested them and they last for >4 hours, which surprised me given how small they are. Also bought some giant green pipe cleaners. Why? Because!
Today: Registered for ticket lotto.
Now pondering how to prevent said glowstick bracelets from becoming MOOP.

I picked up 5 days worth of Mountain House backpacker freeze dried food today. They are actually quite tasty.

Thursday: Purchased all cotton cargo pants in a dust-friendly color at a thrift shop. Also, knit a cotton headband.
Now I need some strips of cool fabric to run through the headband to make a veil.

No ticket yet (waiting for the low income applications) but, 3 different sized ziplock bags, sunscreen, trashbags, 5 different colored rolls of ducktape, a can of powdered gatorade and a bottle of sunscreen. ...so, stuff that I know will last the few months I need to store it.
...plus researching how to do other stuff, like build a geodesic dome... so I can buy more stuff later on. It's a vicious cycle.

Placed an order this morning for many glowing/ blinky things. Pretty excited about the blinking light-up pigtails

And even if something went wrong, thats stuff that could be used through out the year besides Bman.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sunscr ... re/AN01968Discard sunscreen that's past the expiration date, is more than three years old or has been exposed to high temperatures.
Re: One Item for BM a Day
Exactly. ...and, yes, it does have an expiration date... 10/2013, so I could even hold onto it for next year if I had to.illy dilly wrote: Hell yeah!

I love that stuff. Make sure you clear the nozzle after spraying, and find someone to do your back. Don't forget your heels and the tops of your feet.

Possibly the worst sunburn I ever saw on a person was at Burning Man, my first year. One of my campmates forgot to spray his ankles.

That's terrible! ....and now I want to buy a gigantic case of the stuff to bring with me. A bottle a day keeps the sun away. .......Savannah wrote:Possibly the worst sunburn I ever saw on a person was at Burning Man, my first year. One of my campmates forgot to spray his ankles.
Re: One Item for BM a Day
Me too JD!!
Seriously, though, how many bottles of sunscreen do you guys usually bring? This seems like a very important item....
Re: One Item for BM a Day
I bring two spray cans, at minimum. (Sometimes I'll throw in a tube already in progress, too, if I have extra laying around. One misses fewer spots with tube-style sunscreen.) I believe there are still spray sunscreens that don't have alcohol in them, which is helpful if you have sensitive skin. To my dismay, the Neutrogena Cooling sunscreen scabs up my arms (I think it's the alcohol in it) but other folks love it. Last year I used a variety of Aveeno spray sunscreen that didn't have alcohol--an off-white can, which I now can't seem to find online. Anyway. Aveeno was pretty great.Milayna wrote:Me too JD!!Seriously, though, how many bottles of sunscreen do you guys usually bring? This seems like a very important item....
. . . Spray sunscreen is useful for getting the part in your hair, if you have one. I don't burn easily, but that's one place that I do . . . and then it hurts to brush my hair.

Tops of feet sounds like a no-brainer (for sandal-ed and barefoot people anyhow), but the heels? Wow. Good to know. What about under the chin? I've heard that's a place skiers burn often, because sunlights reflects off the snow. Is it the same on the playa.
My one thing for Friday: Picked up a faux fur coat at Goodwill. Has rad '80s square shoulders so I'm not so sure I like it... but I could always gift it to Kostume Kult if it turns out to be "not my thing."

Yeah, the surface of the playa is whitish and reflects sun.
Now, if you cut out the shoulders, what could you put "bursting out" of the garment. Maybe you can find some purple octopuses at thrift stores. Erupting purple octopus just seems right...

Careful with sandals! Playa foot will sneak up on you. For two days I ran around singing, "I don't get playa-foot, na-nah-na-nah-nah." Then the skin on one of my toes cracked apart and I started getting open sores. If you do go barefoot, give your feet frequent vinegar baths - they feel fantastic.ensimismada wrote:Tops of feet sounds like a no-brainer (for sandal-ed and barefoot people anyhow)

and by fantastic surely you mean "BURNS LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER"
...well, at least, this is my experience...
the feeling is notable.. but hardly fantastic!
(it beats playa foot/playa hand tho..)

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Productive week in the clothing & playawear department, though for us it's just clothes. We'll be donning them at the Edwardian World's Faire (edwardian & steampunk shindig in SF) on Friday, and likely wearing a half a dozen times between now and when they get packed into bins to head to BRC. I found, ordered, and have received a pair of tweed pants, suspenders, and awesome waistcoat. The tie & tie-tack (in the shape of an airship) is on its way and should be here in a day or two, and we're heading into the home stretch on the jacket. Got the design to where we're both happy, I found some great pieces of leather to use for the trim and then Saturday morning I found just the right fabric for the main part of the coat (as well as a few extra tools we needed to do the job). It's coming along nicely )work in progress shot below)...

Her outfit's looking great, though since the pic below was snapped a few more details and trim have been added along the bustle and bottom edges.

Of course, every project just tends to give you a few more ideas, doesn't it? I want to get a bigger self-healing cutting mat for the workbench, as well as spongey rubber mats and a couple small rugs to put on the floor on the other side of the thing (to reduce fatigue when spending long hours working at the bench). Gotta add that to the list
