An open letter to Gene Rodenberry...

Post by Rabbi Dali Rick » Sun Jan 15, 2012 11:31 am

An open letter to Gene Rodenberry:

As I slowly take off, my official, canon uniform top, fold it neatly, and gently place it on top of my real, Star Trek simulated Tricorder, sitting next to my Captain Kirk action figure, and my TOS Phaser shaped computer mouse, complete with the realistic action sounds, inside my cardboard box already crammed full of a lifetime of dusty mementos, childhood dreams, and unrealized aspirations. I regrettably replace the top, and dutifully slide it all, underneath my bed, slowly, ceremoniously, for the very last time. You see, I realized, some say too late, that the real world we live in, is an awefully dark, unforgiving, and scary place, that doesn't really care about the prime directive, or actually want or care to Boldly Go. That no matter how hard I try, conventions I attend, autographs I get, or episodes I watch, I can never really be, as adventurous as Kirk, as noble as Picard, or as stalwart, and rocksteady as Janeway.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, it had all been a great big waste of time. Gene, You had hoped against hope, that the set of tools you gave us, tools that you had hoped would inspire us, that would make us better, somehow make us different, able to aim for a higher mark, to reach for a different, brighter future. But now, sadly, I realize, that we failed you, Gene Rodeneberry, the Holosuite has been shut down, showing the plain, and awful truth, that you were nothing more, than just a nice old man, with a great idea, with the strange notion, that if you could manage to soldier the consciousness, of just a small portion of the best, and the brightest in this world, they in turn, would infect enough people, with a your simple, and pure ideology, then somehow, if we all worked toward one common cause, the good of all mankind, we could possible affect a change, in the course of our future, and if by some chance, you could marshall those enlightened juggernauts, into a force, eventually producing a groundswell, that could manage to overcome the blind ignorances, the constant and feckless all consuming quest for ultimate power, then maybe, just maybe we, could raise for humankind, as a whole, above it's own silty, seedy underpinnings. You believed we could do it, I believed we could do it, you made us all believe we could do it, but alas in the end, it was just too lofty of a goal, an aim to high, a goal so noble and unreachable, we could never realistically achieve it. You revealed to us a different possibility  a different outcome, a vision so bright and clear, you whole heartedly believed you had given us a roadmap so well thought out, we would be able to use it to change the world, you thought it would help guide us on a path to a new, brighter future, imagining that somehow, by the Grace of God, you had managed to give us a different playbook, a different set of tools, tools that set us apart. Allow use to be the pinaclles that others would seek to imitate. Then one day, I realized, like the twin suns, rising over Vulcan, it dawned on me, in the final tally there is no ICID, no greater good in mankind, that will somehow, ultimately save us from ourselves, that in reality, you Gene Roddenberry, were nothing more just a silly old man, the man behind the curtain, frantically pushing and pulling, the levers on the Great Machine, whose legacy has faded into nothing more than a plastic dream sequence from a Sci-fi, tv sitcom, the constantly looping scene, of this weeks Hero's lofty dialog, all in High Definition, from the Violet-ray Collectors Edition DVD.

I don't know whether we failed you, or the dream was just to big, and unattainable, your dream, that one day equality,
would rein over injustice, good over evil, charity over greed, sanity over the insane, but we never fully realize your dream of mutual respect, love for one another, and the ultimate truth that War has and never will be the Path to Peace, and in that moment  it becomes painfully clear, that Santa really does give rich kids better presents, that my vote really doesn't matter, it's the Electorial College who selects the President, that there never was really any chance, of winning against the Machine.

It was fun to dream, to feel like we were part of something great, something bigger than ourselves, but in the end, Bill was right, were silly little people, stuck in a fantasy world of make believe, in dark rooms, and the basement of our parents, refusing to grow up, refusing to see the world as it really is, and not the Hologram avatar we invent and live on the Internet.

Having awoken from this dream older, wiser, but completely disillusioned, I have to now, somehow manage to go out, into this dark, ugly, cruel world, and get a real life.

Live long and prosper, oh Great Bird Of The Galaxy.

you're bestest pal,

Well, A--he's dead...
B--we don't even know that we succeeded or failed. It may be a bad time now, but we have crawled out of bad times before, done better, been fairer. The problem with giving up the dream, is that what do you live for now? Ready to run that race that even if you win, you're still a rat? Maybe silly dreams are better than becoming that which you despise.
ON the other hand, your accoutrement were even sillier...

All I can say is WOW! Do you think that firing up that dobbie at the start of every Star Trek Show, sitting on the couch without moving for an hour, hypnotized and stoned, stuffing dorritos in our mouths. I mean fuck look at Kirk, I mean Shatner, what a horrible example of how to age gracefully, a man who had the ability to take care of himself lacked the respect for himself. Yeah it is depressing as I think about it. Thanks Rebbi, I was feeling pretty good, now I want to find a tv to turn off.

this is a fact:

I have watched every episode of star trek and every movie at least twice.

that is 703 episodes at about 45minutes each.. tallying up to 3 SOLID weeks worth of star trek without stopping... without including the movies (or animated series).

I like star trek.

ok ?

well.. we havnt yet made it past the eugenics wars and i think this a great sign for hope.

you cant hope to accomplish these goals before the first warp capable ship even flew, can you, Rabbi ?

hell.. the people who made The Federation possible arent even born yet.

theres still hope, .. and Gene knew this.. his lofty ideas werent considered accomplishable within our lifetime, or his.. he saw this as a future that came about after such horrible things as we know are coming..

That future is the light at the end of a long dark tunnel, which we are still riding in..

To be fair, the timeframe he wrote about was more than a century from now. He left kind of a wide berth for us to wallow and eventually drag our collective selves up to a higher, nobler place.

Did the timing of the post have anything to do with yesterday's start of production on the sequel to Abrams' recent reboot of the franchise?

Alas, I fear we are too late, the voices of the 99% are drown out, by the money of the rich, our causes derailed, vilified, and ridiculed by the bought and paid for media. The powers that be have taken control of the train, and are sending it, full steam ahead, directly into the path of an oncoming war, that will be like none we've ever experienced. The Mega-corporations can now openly buy the offices of the public, without fear of retribution, or backlash, and they have the resources available, no matter what the cost. We have been hearded into a dark room, and told to wait here for our freedom, when the few awake, who know look up, see the shower heads of our demise, spewing toxic gas into the room, toxic gas that has been sanction, and approved by the FDA, AMA, WHO, and a long list of others, who we have given the important jobs of watching our backs. As you know, our words here, are now considered acts, of undefensable terrorism, punishable by interment indefinitely, without the benefit of trial, or Lawyer. The sound you hear, is not the back beat of the bass from some really cool Dub-step track, but the drums, of an already decided war. It saddens me, that this once great nation, and it's proud, and noble citizens, have been transformed into groups of bitter, backbiting, factions of dumbed, down children, who walk around in the dark, afraid and refusing to cut on the light, even when they can see the glow of the lightswitch on the wall. Afraid of the light, because they know, it will only illuminate the truth, that has been written on that wall, for all future generations to see, and remember, and has been done so, with the blood of our forefathers, the patriots, and anarchist who came before us. I will vote for Ron Paul the sole voice of reason, against the oligarchs of Power mad men, who now own us all, through the attrition of our civil rights, and liberties, bought with the blood money of the banking system, big Business, Agro and the Pharma. Blood money, derived from the auctioning off of the homes, and property of the disenfranchised citizens, raped pillaged, and thrown under the corporate wheel of tyranny. We cannot fight back, we cannot speak up, we cannot change this...

We lost before the battle, before it has even begun. If and when, I see you in line, on our way to the FEMA concentration camps, we shall cry together, and lament on the death, of our once great, and free nation...
