Yes, you are correct. But that is even more of a reason to stand behind them and encourage them to black out for a day to show their opposition and raise awareness of the majority of people that use their service and have never even heard of SOPA.

Maybe wikipedia in English will work in other countries. Maybe only the U.S domain is getting shut down (I will ask my peeps to check).

Noone can access the English version. According to wikipedia -

"What can users outside of the U.S. do to support this effort?
Users outside of the U.S. can contact their local State Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or similar branch of government. Tell them that you oppose the draft US SOPA and PIPA legislation, and all similar legislation. SOPA and PIPA will have a global effect - websites outside of the U.S. would be impacted by legislation that hurts the free and open web. And, other jurisdictions are grappling with similar issues, and may choose paths similar to SOPA and PIPA.
"

But -

"The English Wikipedia will be accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. Because the protest message is powered by JavaScript, it's also possible to view Wikipedia by completely disabling JavaScript in your browser."
In my world there's only legible and more legible.

I'll be spam-whacking (because the bastards don't take a break), but I'm otherwise offline tomorrow as well. I'd blackout my inactive website, but I don't remember how to access it. Oops.

Check out Google. They have their Graphic blacked out. I guess they couldn't afford to take their search engine off line.

no it doesnt stand against anything they 'stand for' they stand for spreading information freely.

wikipedia would be subject to the law themselves and possibly a victim of it.

if you havnt noticed wikipedia is FULL of copyrighted content (in fact, very little of wikipedia is in the public domain). All of which could be used to take it down if the right person decides that it is in their interest to take up a case.

THIS is the type of shit wikipedia had to deal with BEFORE sopa..

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/03/us/03fbi.html
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken on everyone from Al Capone to John Dillinger to the Unabomber. Its latest adversary: Wikipedia.

The bureau wrote a letter in July to the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization of Wikipedia, demanding that it take down an image of the F.B.I. seal accompanying an article on the bureau, and threatened litigation: “Failure to comply may result in further legal action. We appreciate your timely attention to this matter.”
To believe that wikipedia is exempt from the DANGERS of this bill is to WHOLLY MISUNDERSTAND WHAT THIS BILL IS and MISUNDERSTAND what wikipedia does.

I support the wikipedia blackout because the SOPAs and the PIPAs are bad for all of our freedoms in the roughly 8-15 amendments to our national rulebook laid out in the Bill of Righteousness. Everyone should call their representatives in the house of congress and supreme court and tell them to stop all the SOPAs and PIPAs before all talk comes to an end on the internet. Several sites have already been affected by the nothing - like in that movie where there is a furry dragon dog - what was that?

Our great nation from the eastern shores of Colorado all the way to mountaintops of west Kansas has thrived for thousands of years, ever since George Washington rode his horse down the redwood highway to tell all great Americans that the bad guys were coming. It has thrived on the freedoms granted by the Bill of Righteousness, and by computer brains - such as wikipedia.

Is this what we want, a future without our computer brains? Stop the SOPAs and the PIPAs!

The coffee doesn't seem to be working - maybe I should check a few things when wikipedia comes back up???

Seriously though, read up on the problems with this bill if you have not already.

Be sure to lobby the authors of the bill, and all income producers for them you can reach.

I asked netflix to take a position on the bill.
Reminded them that a boycott of rental material from hollywood distribution won't help them or the bill's authors.

Don't forget theatres.
Try to reach the management when they are located where you are.
Most chains have a local office.

I already boycott dvd and cd sales, as well as theatres, due to the personal use bans in the usa.

Vote with your feet.

Music is easy.
There are lots you can buy direct from musicians.

Did you know that using a vcr is a criminal act now?
There is nothing these people produce that can't be done without.

Remind them.

If you tap the ESC key on wikipedia before the dead screen comes up, it actually allows you to get on the site.
This won't affect the protest or the message it's intended to send.

If you miss the few second window to hit ESC, just refresh the browser and tap ECS when you see your screen pop up. You have to be quick, but it works perfect.

A day without wikipedia, is like a day without sunshine!
