DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
I am Nixon, going to China.
Dear Sound Camps, please do not ask the General Public to fund your Party. It is NOT ART...
it's fun, it's great, it's fucking sparkly, but it ain't fucking ART.
so, if you can't afford to bring a massive fucking sound system and all of the shiny shiny accoutrements to the desert DONT FUCKING DO IT!
there is nothing wrong with going small, or being RADICALLY SELF RELIANT.
if i see any sound camps begging on kickstarter, i will be the first to shit on them.
now someone get henry in here, i have a plan for cambodia.

HELL YES.
THE SAME GOES FOR THE FOOLS ASKING FOR MONEY TO FUND THEIR STUPID NON ARTISTIC PARTY BUS THAT ONLY PASSES THE DMV BECAUSE OF THEIR "INTERACTIVITY"
pacifier sucking trance loving vicks vaporub buying kids LOVE to go to music shows in the off season just as much as at burning man.. and these groups could easily raise money hand over fist compared to the art projects who struggle with their Art Auctions.
OH YEAH, AND STOP WHINING THAT BURNING MAN DOESNT FUND YOU. (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE).

Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
of course they do 100%! by default anyone applying for a license implies they believe they have a mutant vehicle..
it IS the dept of mutant vehicles, right?
digging out the official PR is always boring but here we go!
In order to be eligible for a Mutant Vehicle license you must satisfy ALL of the following criteria:
#1 Level of Mutation
Mutate your vehicle to the point that it is not recognizable as a street vehicle. A radically mutated vehicle will not resemble or represent a car, truck, golf cart or any other readily identifiable street vehicle. Is the vehicle radically mutated or is the exterior a temporary decoration that required little or no actual mutation of the base vehicle?
#2 Interactivity
Provide an interactive experience for participants of Black Rock City. Interactivity is defined as an opportunity for any BRC citizen to participate in some activity offered by your vehicle. The theme and/or size of the vehicle is what's considered here. Do you entertain a crowd? Have plenty of room for riders? Provide a service to the community via your vehicle? Include an interactive element?
etc..
cant have one without the other...
youve seen em out there.. you know you have..
you know what a bus looks like...
you kno what a unimog looks like..
surely theres plenty of images to compare!... but you can google those up yerself..
YEAH they are devaluing the goodness of all that is holy where mutant vehicles are concerned.
park it in camp and have a dance party there! pal.
these big busses that are unmodified certainly encourage new builders to build unmodified party vehicles because WELL I SAW LAST YEAR MULTIPLE VEHICLES THAT WERENT MUTATED, C'MON MAN!
....and we will certainly see kickstartr campaigns for crap influenced by that non mutant party bus crap.
say no to roving parties that arent art!

Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
Oh.. that one is a special exception and there's a special place in my heart for that jackwad.
It was like.. Wednesday night I believe out at Robot Heart in mid-playa. Dude pulls up straight in the middle of a set and parks not 50' away and attempts to sound war with the RH bus.
WTF?
One of the most douche-iest things I witnessed the entire burn.

Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
If the vehicle's mutated and strange, I'm all for it bumping as much wattage as her crew is able to bring along. As for the UniMog, it is somewhat mutated (roof section, the fold out wings, a few other details) but it's likely grandfathered in (along with a lot of the older vehicles whose mutations wouldn't normally meet the current requirements).
While we're on the subject though…
DEAR SOUND CAMPS…. DON'T FUCKING HOARD TICKETS FOR YOUR PERFORMERS/TALENT/HEADLINERS. Let them get their own goddamned tickets (you know, radical self reliance). Last year caught a lot of people off-guard, but this year scarcity should be a surprise to no one. Anyone you'd consider putting on your lineup who can't get their shit together over the next 8 months should not be there. There will be no shortage of A-list quality talent you'll be able to fill your timeslots with, and hoarding dozens upons dozens of tickets means you're denying the opportunity to go for people who are trying to be prepared and get their own tickets.

1000% agreement with trilobyte.
Lemur, dont think that i am somehow not Pro-Sound Camp, because i am...
Im sorry that you're so white and cant enjoy the shaking of ass to the funky funky beat.
You should get more sun.

I know...we've been watching you...
Now back on topic, I like the Space Cowboys and the unimog so they're exempt.
Robot Heart is too.
Ok , now lets move on... How do we Put dubstep onto the trash heap of musical history, where it rightfully belongs...

This was just...
I really just planned on going to the open playa to look at / play with artwork that morning. I was actually thinking to myself - no more dance party - not gonna be a raver this morning. Then some mad-max looking bug-car picked me up and dumped me here.
A dozen years ago I used to go to some pretty trashy EDM parties. The whole vibe mostly sucked - people talk about spectators at BRC, but they have no idea. But a few of the people there were going for something, and I appreciated what they were reaching for.
This was IT - they had it and it looked completely effortless. Just right out in the open waiting for people to walk up and start moving. Unreal.

Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
But you love the boogie. We know you do.
Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
Do the buses like Robot Heart get grants? I do like the big sound camps out there. They add to the over-the-top largeness of Burning Man. I really would like to see two or more sound camps square off and do a shoot out. That would be an epic event. I'd like to see several sound camps sync up together with an fm signal and bounce sounds and ideas off each other.

Re: DEAR SOUND CAMPS.
i had proposed a Wall of Sound along the ten oclock strip a few years back with all the camps synched and pumping out one dj from rotating camps..
the whole west side of of the playa would be huge coherent party, if only for a few hours.
the doppler effect would be worth the effort.
and yes Dougly, i do love the boogie, i cannot help myself, its the beat the beat the beat...

The angle of the dangle is proportionate to the heat of the beat.
