The Drunkest States in America

Post by Elderberry » Sat Jan 21, 2012 8:42 am

Which state would you guess consumes the most alcohol? Which state consumes the least? Make your best guess before clicking on the link. Hope you're guess was better than mine!

I was surprised When I read the results. The most drunkest state I picked was second. The least drunkest I picked wasn't on the list.

Thanks John! Interesting info!
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Bwahahahahahahahaha, I live in the supposedly third most drunken place in America, but, I am sure that most of the alcohol consumed here goes down the throats of non-residents.

New Hampshire (#1) sells a lot of booze to outsiders, too; no tax!

So it just goes to show: there are lies, there are damn lies, and then there are statistics.

Original data set w/cites -- I'm hoping they applied some method to determine actual consumption regardless of who's buying and where (package stores, bars, social clubs, etc.). Place like Nevada, they probably stock & pour a lot more than actually gets consumed, no?

good point bob!

I can recall many times at the burn where i will wake up in the morning to find my drink cup sealed up with the lid tight and totally full of yummie cocktails or booze.... and i think "man i was so drunk.. who was stupid enough to give me another drink?!"

clearly.. some drinks are sold but not consumed.

New Hampshire
Total alcohol consumed: 48.7 gallons per person
Beer: 309.3 cans per person
Wine: 29.4 bottles per person
Spirits: 4.3 gallons per person

The NIAAA gathered data on alcohol sales for each state and divided it by census population numbers, including any person 14 or older (can't forget all those underage drinkers).

Czech Republic (in 2009)
Total alcohol consumed: 49,1 gallons per person
Beer: 42,2 gpp
Wine: 4,8 gpp
Spirits (over 40% of alcohol): 2,1 gpp

This statistic includes every Czech including newborns.

No wonder to have this numbers when the beer is cheaper than soda in pubs...

So, do you think this is somehow related to the statistic of NH?

As for the drunkest states in America, I would say that the only reason why Mississippi isn't #1 on that list is because of our low population. If we were on equal ground with these other states, we would be a lot higher. In Mississippi, we try to be #1 in everything, such as: diabetes, lack of education, obesity, poverty rate, teen birth rate, HIV rates, etc.

We have you beat by two points down here in Tennessee, but that isn't saying much.

Maybe we both should stop exporting all this bourbon, and start drinking it?

I live in Denver and more than make up for at least 4 people in Colorado springs, a lot of tea toatalers out there.
We should rank higher. Check this site out www.drunkard.com started out as a local magizine off Colfax in Denver. It's the modern drunkard magazine website right at home there

Alaska would have been a reasonable guess some years back. But the idiotic state legislature passed a law that states you cannot have more than one alcoholic beverage in front of you (or served to you) at a time. So no boilermakers, no going out for champagne brunch and having them throw in a Bloody Mary or Ramos Fizz, no double fisted drinkers of any kind. Stupid Sarah Palin.

I'm actually glad we only ranked top 10.
It shows we know how to drink, but not over drink.

The other factor they don't take into account, is that higher alcohol micro brew is the norm in CO. So even though we drink less beer, we drink stronger beer.

Another factor that I'm sure isn't accounted for is all the employees of Coors. Considering they get a free 12 pack every week, and can go to the 'Coors Trailers' and pay cash for almost whole sale beer doesn't come up on the index. I know a lot of the times that we're going to have huge parties, we give the cash to a Coors employee and let them get the beer for damned near dirt cheap.

So that makes you the common denominator?
By simply moving to a place your muck it up so bad that the whole state starts drinking more!
