Knowmad, these are called jootis (literal translation is "shoes") and very much part of Indian clothing. Usually worn with pajama/sherwani/dhotis for men.
These do look festive and are usually worn with heavy embellished Indian clothes. Typical look for men at any North Indian wedding.

Got my grill today!!!!
Found it used on craigslist, but it looks almost new, works perfectly and I saved $75.
Now I have most of the big purchases done. Next big project besides plane ticket and my ongoing crochet project is the shade for over the tent.
My folks are going away at the end of February for two weeks, and assuming there is a stretch of dry, snow-free days, I'll set it up and take the measurements I need. Noting fancy, just some extensions to the tent to hold a heavy silver tarp (or tarps) off of it a bit, and some guy lines.

Those are amazing shoes, Knowmad, yeah I think silks is the way to go with that too. Exotic, cool, and fun… plus bonus points as silk doesn't hold playa dust.
Congrats on the grill, VultureChow. But wait a second, crocheting the shade for your camp? Sounds adventurous! Make sure it's got solid reinforcement to handle the added weight of accumulated dust and/or possible rain.

Oops. Typo. I meant crochet project, and the shade for my camp. The crochet project is a 40' crocheted trash fence around part of my camp. Although, I was thinking of embellishing a mesh shade panel for the side of my awning by embroidering it.trilobyte wrote:Those are amazing shoes, Knowmad, yeah I think silks is the way to go with that too. Ah okay, still sounds like a pretty big crochet project size-wise.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Well the good thing is the design I'm working on is pretty modular, so if I decide to stop after 10 feet, or 12 feet, I can. And I can comfortably crochet at least 4 inches of fence a day, so that's 120 days or 4 months. Add a month for days off, and I should be done by the beginning of july. One month for assembly, and I'll be good to go.trilobyte wrote:Ah okay, still sounds like a pretty big crochet project size-wise.
But if I only have 20' of it, I won't shoot myself, plus I have a few other ongoing projects.

This is where I've been writing about it and asking for ideas. If I have time, I think I'll crochet some moop to attach to it as though it's been blown in.

If you decide to "kickstart" your way to the playa (something which would garner you much hostility on this board) crocheted moop would be your premiums.
Because crocheted moop is the coolest thing I've heard of all week.

I plan on gifting a lot of interesting crocheted items already.theCryptofishist wrote:If you decide to "kickstart" your way to the playa (something which would garner you much hostility on this board) crocheted moop would be your premiums.

But someone in my project thread posted some links on crocheting with recycled trash bags, so I though about crocheting some plastic bags out of plastic bags, and some other items like beer cans and feathers and seeding them on the fence. I think it will look cool.

So when I saw this article I ooohed and aaaahed, and then was sad to realize they are not available for purchase
So while I am definitely not tech savvy enough to make these, I thought I'd share them just for fun

Got a goosedown sleeping bag. I plan to thoroughly break it in camping this spring before bringing it to That Thing in the Dust.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Unless the feathers too are crocheted, and firmly attached.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I'm pretty damn sure she meant feathers made from crochet.
Although, eyelash yarn does shed, so I hope that the feathers are properly tested before being added to the trash fence.

Hah!
And yes, the feathers would be crocheted. Like so:

I was thinking of crocheting representative moop. I know feathers are pretty notorious moop. And plastic trash bags. What else would be good moop?

Cigarette butts, band-aids, scraps of paper, bottle caps, glowsticks, coins from hip scarves.
Cigarette butts are probably the number one thing I find on MOOP sweeps across the Esplanade. Portable ashtrays or tins are the solution, but not all smokers remember to carry one.

Which is what makes saving your altoid tins, painting or decoupaging the name out, and handing them to smokers is such a lovely gift.
And yes, Savannah gave you a nice list.

Lipbalm, lipstick, lipsmudge, lipsync...anything to keep my lovely lips from falling off like last time.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
While at a local orchard supply store, I saw some burlap material 3 feet X 40 foot rolls. A bit priceey though, I,ll keep an eye out for a price drop this spring. It might be usefull as shade material or wind fence. It is tight weave like potato sacking, used for erosion control or natural munching...edit, oops, natural mulching...
Re: One Item for BM a Day
i've made a point to go to the local thrift stores one day a week looking for cool burner stuff.
This week I braved snowstorms and found a pink furry vest. its mahvelous, dahlink.

@Dropman - good score on the lip-stuff.
@Oldguy - I've used that stuff in art projects in defaultia before, it gets seriously MOOPy very fast (it's designed to degrade and fall apart). And of course, it's a massive fire hazard - buyer beware and all that.
@yurtgirl - sounds fun, congrats on the find!

We hit the thrift shops on Kona, I came away with a lovely black kimono with embroidered golden butterflies... never worn, in my size! A silk dress I'll carve apart for the print panels, a hippie dress I'll either give away or bash into something which fits me, a handmade aloha shirt for Larry, a few other aloha shirts, a silk dual layer wrap around skirt, a free embroidered shirt to cut up, and a Hiroshima City with Atom Bomb Dome wall hanging.
Vacation in Hawaii and I go thrift shopping.
