Sky lanterns on playa

Ok, I am sort of bewitched by the Rapunzel's lanterns. I want to get like zillion of these and launch it in the sky. Oh... it would be so magical!

Would one be allowed to launch sky lantern's at BM?
You think any permit would be required?

As far as I can tell, MOOP can be a problem.

there was quite a discussion of this in a thread........I forget which one, but essentially, due to moop and fire danger (when landing), consensus was "no", don't do it.

That can be easily fixed by not launching it until Sunday night.

MOOP and fire hazard would potentially be a problem (you'd be surprised how many of them come down with fire still sputtering). Several dumbasses launched them last year, one came down a few feet from our shade structure, still burning.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT CHINESE SKY LANTERNS

In the last JRS, we included a post about a project that will be using Chinese sky lanterns ... those paper lanterns that you light a little candle inside and let them float up into the air ... they're really pretty as they drift away, glowing.

The problem is -- and thanks to our Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) for alerting us -- that they're also SUPER dangerous, especially in Black Rock City.

Beyond the MOOP factor, they can float off into the city and light a tent on fire ... and they can float off into the surrounding mountain ranges and start a wildfire. In fact, with the prevailing winds as they are, this is highly likely.

So, DO NOT USE CHINESE FIRE LANTERNS IN BLACK ROCK CITY. AT ALL. EVER.
