Lighting a hexayurt
Lighting a hexayurt
I have camped in an RV for the last three years but don't have access to one for 2012. I'm thinking of building a yurt. Does anyone have some ideas on lighting? Are they really dark inside even during the daytime? I've seen photos where they look well lit during the day, but can't tell if they have lighting. What's the best way to light a yurt for nighttime use? Thanks!!!

Lots of light comes in through the seems during the day, plus you can add windows.
At night we use battery powered lanterns. We have small ones for the bedside tables and to leave on as a night light in the entry, a few larger ones placed around strategically.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

The inside is just as reflective as the outside, so it doesn't take much.
(Actually, I hung white sheets all around mine on the walls to help with heat... but the roof dome was plenty reflective.)

This "technology" may be viable during the day, certainly the price is right.

Maybe an opaque bag with drawstrings at bedtime if it reflects too much moonlight?

Hexayurts don't really get that dark at all during the day. I would be surprised if someone needed to light theirs during the day unless they are doing surgery or have Mr. Magoo eyesight...
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I won't worry about daytime lighting, but I'll look into battery powered lanterns for night! THANKS! The man burns in 220 days!

Tink, CJ made one that worked great. You might try contacting her.

A gallon of gasoline will do the job just fine. Whoohaa!

Re: Lighting a hexayurt
A 12V car battery + some 12V LED rope lighting ($.75/foot) does the job nicely.... And I can't emphasize how much nicer the lighting is than a lantern (although I bring one as a backup)tink2011 wrote:I have camped in an RV for the last three years but don't have access to one for 2012. How does one connect the 12V car battery to the LED Lighting? I love the concept.. but I need a DIY video I d love to try this!

I concur on the plenty of light during the day.
At night we use some light pucks taped to the ceiling that run off AA's...
Plenty of light!

Re: Lighting a hexayurt
it requires a little work with the soldering gun and some resisters. I referenced http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz to figure out how to make the string, then you can run straight off the battery.MikieCGY wrote:How does one connect the 12V car battery to the LED Lighting? I just got solar powered LED string lights for a patio umbrella from Big Lots for my tent. 96 bulbs on 8 strands that spiderweb out from the middle. Sorta like these:

I'm thinking they'll be perfect for lighting the inside of a shelter.
That plus a couple solar powered lanterns like these:
