Good score AntiM
Burning Man isn't about the stuff you see when you get there ....it's about the people that brought that stuff there
Re: One Item for BM a Day
Great haul.AntiM wrote:We hit the thrift shops on Kona, I came away with a lovely black kimono with embroidered golden butterflies... never worn, in my size! A silk dress I'll carve apart for the print panels, a hippie dress I'll either give away or bash into something which fits me, a handmade aloha shirt for Larry, a few other aloha shirts, a silk dual layer wrap around skirt, a free embroidered shirt to cut up, and a Hiroshima City with Atom Bomb Dome wall hanging.
Vacation in Hawaii and I go thrift shopping.
Hawaiian thrift stores are amazing. I'm guessing it's pockets of wealth, a certain blase attitude about aloha shirts (another will always come along--if you live there) and a low turnover.

Sounds like some awesome thrift finds, and let's face it - you probably never could have made such a find at a shop on the mainland.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Hawaiian thrifting? Ah, yeah! Sorta planned a spur of the moment trip to Kauai for late February, so thrifting with BM in mind is now on the agenda! Of course, Kauai being so sleepy, we'll have to see what is on offer.
The trip is sort of like "One Item for BM a Day" because my wife and I always have really active and exhausting vacations. With BM looking to test our endurance for difficult 'vacations', the Kauai trip should take some pressure off come August. But ... we're actually still camping a couple days, haha! I think this HI vacation is necessary for letting go of expectations one typically has for 'vacation' come August. It'll hopefully create some additional capacity for suffering through tough conditions (heat, dust, ooontz ooontz, etc). heh

My hypothesis is the sleepier the local, the better the thrift.
But then I like really weird shit.

Today I bought some adorable sparkley nipple covers, and tried to draw out plans for my tent and monkey hut. Im not a very good monkey-hut artist.
Also, I'm doing research on how to make the beautiful painted canvas I wanted to use as my "floor" to not moop. The paint chips like crazy, but so far I can find no solution.

See, thats the thing. It's already painted. I'll probably end up having to make a new canvas and dye it instead of painting it. I didnt paint the first one, anyway, so it's not a big loss. It's just so gosh darned pretty. I'm trying to upload a photo...but my phone is not playing along.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I painted a canvas floor carpet with acrylic craft paints over a base coat of white. Coated it with spray on polyurethane. Been to the playa repeatedly and no flaking. But the canvas was floorcoth, made to take paint, so that may be a factor.
I don't have a pic of it on this notebook, but I know I have it posted somewhere or other.

oooooh good Idea. I think it's some kind of water-based paint. When I rub it repeatedly with a wet towel a little bit comes off. It is a drop cloth, so I think this might work.
Worth a try, right?! Thanks, AntiM!!

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Not a tangible item per se, but I think we reached a significant milestone last night. We've been in brainstorm mode since about middle of the week at Burning Man in 2011 with ideas and concepts for Eridu Society (our camp) in 2012. Some great stuff, but of course some ideas were better than others, some more practical and feasible than others, and all that usual nonsense. But last night Pandorra and I finally came to an agreement on a plan for 2012. I'd say 'I finally convinced her' but she's a strong-willed smartypants, it's not something she'd give in on just to shut me up

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Going through a load of stuff my wife bagged for Goodwill. Some of the clothing has to be forty years old but still in decent shape. Have no idea where she has been hiding it. Found a great large gold and black bow. Fit it with a clip and I have a "loud" bow tie. Also snagged a scarf that looks like it came out of the sixties. Not sure how I'll use it but Goodwill isn't getting it

Wow, AntiM, that's a fantastic bit of art! It really makes the camp less mundane and more colorful.
Edit: Not that I think anything at BM would be all that "mundane," your camp especially. Shucks, that came out all wrong...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
After being heavily inspired by Ratty's "create with what you have" thread and by AntiM's talks of thrift stores, I decided to find a middle way.
Last evening I went to the thrift store and found a perfect black dress (well cut and tailored). I decided to stitch petals on the black dress to achieve that dreamy(?) look (again inspired by Ratty's use of rose petals)
I love the result!! I am so happy I have a dress for playa

It does say stitched and not glued so that should help the moop possibilities.

I am now the proud owner of 18 yards (total) of 4 colours of tulle,
turquoise, purple, red and black.
Looking forward to the next Tutu Tuesday...
(HA!!! Imagine me in a Tutu!!! Ha!!!)
And, we (my son, Aaroneous and I) are working on such a nice little giftie to bring along...
for anyone who has a camera....
We hope to have several hundred of these little surprises made shortly.
Both of these projects have me very excited... I can't wait to see if I get tickets next week!!!

My flippin amazing Mom, TamaraKay, just informed me that my corset-tutu outfit just arrived at the house...I dont know if that counts as DOING anything for burning man, but it's got me SO EXCITED I can hardly stand it. Tu-tu! Tu-tu! hooray!
I've also gone and read the description of fertility 2.0 and tried to wrap my head around it. This might take a while.

Wow Syrita, that sounds most interesting!
Two Items today:
I upgraded to Fertility 2.0 Pro with a multi-seat license
AND...
From half a world away, MelanieJane sent me a gin-u-wine bottle of aussie Vegemite!
Already testing recipes. This morning it was 1/2tsp V whipped into eggs and scrambled. Both Sweetpea and I loved it.
Grai saw my FB post about it and said he'll soon be sending me a bottle of Marmite. Can't wait!

I have a couple yards of pink n green camo tulle. I need to find a good tutu pattern which is not the freaking no-sew version (I hate them with a passion since mine tried to eat my head last year). It would be for MyLarry, so I'm thinking maybe jeans waistband with pockets and pouches above layers of ruffles. A utili-tutu as it were.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Momentous day for me. Made my first piece of crochet moop. A cigarette butt. Just working on the pattern, the base is too bulbous, but stitched into the trash fence, I think it will look okay. (crappy picture though, the item is actually the size of a cigarette butt)

More importantly, finally gifted something. Sent some really nice fabric that I had lying around to someone for a costume. I don't sew, so it was wasting away in my closet.
I feel guilty for getting my ticket in the presale. It's tough to watch everyone freaking out.
