SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
OK.
i know.. i know.. it might be a bit late to say this.. (and i know a few of us have mentioned it before)
but HOLY SHIT. ..
SHERLOCK ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_%28TV_series%29 this one )
is parhaps the most enjoyable show ive seen since, ok wait for it, STAR TREK.
i know!!! crazy right?!!
apparently the 2nd series will be aired legally on PBS this spring..
but, however you may be able to attain it.. i highly suggest watching this most awesome of shows. I grew up watching the Basil Rathbone sherlock films.. and I thought it was impossible for me to enjoy a reimagining of sherlock as a tv series.. but holy moly, i was so wrong, why did i wait YEARS before watching it?!!?!? sheesh.. i was so stupid.
Why anyone would have made a followup ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_H ... of_Shadows ) to the CRAPPY 2009 Sherlock film ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_H ... 09_film%29 ) when this show was in existance and in production is clearly beyond me.. maybe they hoped americans dont know they had been beaten by a buncha brits making a television show!
so.. yes.. great show... nothing nearly as good as this in so long ..i watch lotsa TV stuff and !! oh boy.. now i gotta wait till 2013 before the 3rd series comes out?! !! its worth the wait.
that is all.

So what do you think of Skins, or Shameless?
Or Spooks?

Re: SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
Agreed! Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman are wonderful as Holmes and Watson. I love a Sherlock Holmes where Watson is valuable and not made out to be an idiot (which really, reflects poorly on Holmes, if you ask me).
PBS has edited parts out of the original, so catching the BBC version is better (when actually possible).

I love the UK Sherlock TV series!!! It's one of the best shows ever made.
The only thing I didn't expect to happen is, by the end of first season 3rd episode, I fell in love with Moriarty.

Re: SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
I'm a huge fan of the Sherlock series. Brilliantly acted, but also brilliantly written stories. Head guy Steven Moffatt will be familiar to Doctor Who fans, he's written a number of the better episodes in the last half dozen years, and is currently serving as the series' showrunner. He was also the brains behind a late 90's/early 2000's comedy series called Coupling, which was also brilliant. The other main writer behind Sherlock is a guy by the name of Mark Gatiss, who plays Sherlock's older brother in the new series. He's also penned a few brilliant Dr. Who episodes, but also was a part of a really great (and extremely strange) sketch comedy troupe called the League Of Gentlemen. It was a sketch comedy show that was a sort of horror story set in the fictional rural town of Royston Vasey. Well worth looking up on all counts...
Re: SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
maybe it is just me reading into it a bit much but i think i can see some Moffat-age in some of the stuff..

There are bound to be similarities, both programs share some elements with sort of solving mysteries and whatnot. I hope he returns to comedy again someday, I thought Coupling was some of his best work.

Not seen it. I hate Benedict Cumberbatch's face. I just hate it. I can't even explain.
Beware the creeping Britishness
Re: SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
Cumberbatch is a fine actor, he's in "Warhorse" also this year. There are many ways to access BBC Programming. We Yanks are indeed unaware of great work "over the pond".

Is that why the season ended so oddly?
I thought Coupling was great.
Even liked the usa version.
I'm trying to get copies of Shameless season #2-8 to watch, if anyone can help.
#1-5 can be streamed, but I can't get that here.
I saw the William Macy version, first season, not bad.
In places, very good.

I LOVE "Sherlock." Love it love it. Love all the tiny references to the original stories as well as the reinterpretation of old characters and settings. And the acting is great. Best Watson ever.

Re: SHERLOCK (UK tv series) is super awesome
I've heard Cumberbatch is also in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, though I haven't seen that film. He was great in War Horse (though his part wasn't big… War Horse is an incredible film nonetheless).
Series 9 of Shameless just began in the UK, as did series 2 of the US version. I think the adaptation did a fantastic job of becoming its own show. Another interesting UK/US show and conversion is Being Human. The premise of the show sounds almost like the start of a bar-room joke… A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost walk into a bar… well, in this case move into a house. Hijinks ensue. UK version has three series' out, and the US version just started its second season. Both have strengths and weaknesses, as well as great performances.
And if you've never seen the original, check out the UK series Life On Mars. Holy crap what an original concept (I couldn't get past the first ten minutes of the US adaptation). Modern day cop gets hit by a car, wakes up in 1971 (with Bowie's Life On Mars blaring on the radio). No idea what's happened, but he's a cop on the force back then. Has some nice fish out of water (well, fish out of time) aspects, as well as using the excuse to be non-PC. Some very brilliant performances - it ran for two series with very high ratings before they ended it (the story has a conclusion). They followed that with a show called Ashes To Ashes, which did a similar thing with a female cop who goes back to the 1980's. The story exists in the same universe, and a couple characters from Life On Mars are in Ashes. While I thought Life was the better of the two, Ashes was still fun to watch - it ran for three series before reaching its own dramatic conclusion.

I've been watching Quatermass lately.
I can see why it's held up.
Anybody else?

I like the usa version of Shameless quite a bit, except for some fast cuts and shaky camera work.trilobyte wrote:I've heard Cumberbatch is also in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, though I haven't seen that film. They used some people from the uk production.
In some ways it's improved.
I wasn't too thrilled with the usa Life On Mars, other than a curiosity, but near the end it got very interesting.
I would have liked to have seen where they were going with it.

Edit option isn't working.
To be clear, i'm talking about the early Quatermass in black and white.
In serial form.
