Anyone interested in a Black Rock City Hack Space?
Anyone interested in a Black Rock City Hack Space?
I don't really have plans at this time. The idea keeps tickling my brain and I don't know how to make it stop.

im sure there would be, if it was well known and well stocked.. tons of art projects/mutantvehicles/camps that could use the resources of one..
hell,.. i always hear about how having welding skills comes in handy out there...
surely this kinda thing would be of use to some..
it also, for those interested.. it would be fun to learn stuff as a noob to this kind of thing..

I like your creation!! (this youtube was copied from one of your other posts)
I'm no "techie". Please explain Hack Space.
For the playa specific, what would we hack in this space? Maybe mini solar powered projects?
IIRC I've seen quite a few radio controlled toys on playa. Maybe tricking out our own radio controlled toy vehicles, with lights for night would be cool.
For daytime, they'd make great delivery systems for passing things amongst freinds during those hot afternoons at camp. Would liquid fuel power be best?

I am am more in the physical realm than the electronic (I am a contractor in defaultia), But one of the greatest joys I have had at TTITD is being a tool/knowledge resource. There are so---ooo many makers around. I try my best to be a mini techshop in my truck. So sweet to come up with a #6-32 nylock, angle grinder, set of bolt cutters, or a roll of 26ga wire when it is needed.
I would think that a hackerspace would be gladly recieved. Lord knows I would come by just to shoot the shit and throw my $.02 in.

Uh, fuck yea, that could be the coolest thing on the playa this year. Just make the focus on hacking silly shit to put up in the event, have some people on hand who are handy with drills and tying down and teaching, it would be fucking rad. I'll come and show some chicks that power tools aren't that scary, even if you could lose a finger. (I am a chick, that is what I did in school with my other female classmates.)

Don't fool yourself. A lot of playa chicks could teach college courses on tool use. The DPW gals could teach graduate seminars on same.stinkyfoot wrote:I'll come and show some chicks that power tools aren't that scary, even if you could lose a finger. If all chicks who know how to use tools taught a few other chicks to use tools, the world would be 367% more awesome.
(That is a real statistic, btw)

Regarding a hacker space as Burning Man, my friends and I are in the process of setting up Hack Rock City - http://hackrockcity.org
Things are a little up in the air because of the ticket situation, but we're moving along with projects for regionals and hopefully Burning Man itself. We're hoping to have about 20 people, so if you're interested in joining us, drop us a line.
