Hoarding tickets
Everybody seems to be talking about everyone else hoarding tickets this year. JRS says a LOT of people are doing it. I would assume that the people here on ePlaya are a good cross section of the population at large of BRC. Lets see what it looks like. You dont have to explain your vote unless you want to.
I only applied for the 1 ticket I need. My money is tight, I don't have room to tie up more than I need.

Re: Hoarding tickets
I only hoard gold and newspapers that I haven't had the chance to read yet ... and yes I know that some of them are 10 years old ... but what if there is something important there I need to see?

Re: Hoarding tickets
I don't think anyone hoarded tickets. What appears to have happened is that people entered more than one entry in hopes of getting what they needed. No one expected to buy 6 tickets when they only wanted 2. They will have a small problem if they get more than they need.
Hoarding really isn't the right word.

You're right Shambala, I changed the poll question.
Early results are overwhelmingly "no", I wonder where JRS is getting the info?

It appears that we are going to have 100% of the respondents answering "no". There may be a touch of shame coupled with desperation. The true answer will never be known, since who really know if dear sweet aunt Mildred is actually related to a burner.

Figment and myself = 2 tickets I entered tier one and two..I'm guessing I'll win two at tier two and that's just peachy by me

That's because only real burners frequent eplaya. We're all upstanding people. We take care of our MOOP, and we don't hoard tickets.

We ordered two. Just the number my partner need to go. If we get selected we'll go. If not, we won't. My reasons are voiced in another thread.

Re: Hoarding tickets
I certainly applied for more tickets than I would "need"--in the context of the ability to buy them outright. However, that is not the case here. This is a lottery drawing. We're talking about probabilities here, not guaranteed purchases.
The situation is akin to buying more raffle tickets in order to increase your chances of getting a prize. Sure, the minimum requirement to have any chance at all to win is a single ticket to actually win, but having more increases your odds. In that respect, I "needed" to increase my odds.
I won't apologize for what I've done, nor feel bad. If I'm incredibly lucky and my group has more tickets than we can use, the tickets will be sold to other members in our cam, or get recycled back into the community.

Re: Hoarding tickets
And Badger's not the only one on here to admit to "applying for more tickets" to "increase the chances of (his) name being drawn".
However you want to describe the behavior. The behavior exists, as does numerous earlier threads where people posted strategies they would use to game the system in their favor. It's not something JRS pulled out of its ass to explain the large amount of registrants.
And now since hoarding (and behavior the term is describing) is becoming negatively viewed, the rationales to defend such behavior in their own special case will be interesting to read.

Re: Hoarding tickets
I think what is a major difference in views is that I don't think hoarding is a major problem-issue. I also don't believe the lottery was ever constructed to avoid hoarding, only scalping. I won't rationalize anything away. Rationalizing implies that there is some sense of wrongdoing for which excuses must be made--and I don't have any sense of wrongdoing here.
For the record, I voted "no" since I'm applying the probability context, not the guaranteed context for "need."

Q: Can I register multiple times or with different credit cards?
A: No. Only one registration is allowed per person. This isn't fair to others. If you're trying to help your camp acquire tickets we urge you to look at the various purchasing options as additional opportunities and to utilize the approved environment that we'll be creating.

Sure, so I got a friend to register, which is perfectly legal. Not really all that different than every person in your group registering for two tickets right?Zeke Chaparral wrote:From the Burning Man website: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php#howmany

Re: Hoarding tickets
I considered hoarding, or ordering two tickets--the second to go to someone in the village. (I still remember the panic when I Simon wasn't coming and didn't want to go through that again.) I ended up not doing it, in part because of posts in this sub-forum that pointed out the consequences to others.

Re: Hoarding tickets
Sorry, but for the integrity of this thread...I did, the girl I am partnered with (for the lottery, that is) did, and my best friend/her husband bought a total of four for the two of them. That's 1 extra ticket per person, 4 people. Sorry guys. Played the game. We all WILL resell to burners at whatever price we pay for them.
Re: Hoarding tickets
the price we collectively paid is the ire of nearly the entire community and freaking out and much hand-wringing over "ticket hoarding" !!!kayalovelife wrote: Sorry guys. Played the game. We all WILL resell to burners at whatever price we pay for them.

Re: Hoarding tickets
I ordered two tix at the highest price tier - I am not ashamed, nor do I think I am depriving anyone of tickets..I myself may not get them as lots and lots of people will also have done the same, for the same reason. Although I know, as all of our crew has ordered two as well, that all of us will be going..Had I been going alone, however, I would only have ordered one..It's a group thing..If we have tix left over, we will be selling them at face value..

Re: Hoarding tickets
You made one order for two tickets. What's to be ashamed of that? That was within the guidelines as set forth for the community. If you sell a ticket, it will be for the same price as you paid for that ticket only. It's hard to imagine hoarders selling lower tier tickets while hanging on to their higher tier tickets. You didn't game anything.quadraspleen wrote:I ordered two tix at the highest price tier - I am not ashamed, nor do I think I am depriving anyone of tickets..I myself may not get them as lots and lots of people will also have done the same, for the same reason. I bid for two but would have ideally had partner do the same!
I reeeeeaaally want to go and despite knowing it's not time am checking bank balance obsessively.
And there I was thinking that I would never experience that childish almost knickers wetting anticipation I used to feel around Christmas!!
Maybe if I go to bed really early....

Re: Hoarding tickets
I wanted two and purchased two.
But, having never gone before and having never been in queue for tickets per the previous ticket granting arrangement, I have to ask. How is this lottery system that different from last year? The only difference I see is last year you knew your place, spot, number in queue. This year that place, spot, number is a secret. Perhaps I've over-simplified the idea.

Re: Hoarding tickets
I don't consider it hoarding either. Most of the multiple ticket purchasing that I've heard about is from camps wanting to ensure their campmates all end up with tickets. Just as bmOrg doesn't want us labeling this ticket disbursement procedure a lottery or a failure until it's played out, I don't think people who bought mulitple tickets should be labeled a problem. I'm pretty sure in years past campmates purchased tickets for each other and not just for their own personal use.
A lot of you keep telling people who think the "lottery" failed to give it a chance to work, I ask the same of you. Don't assume people are "hoarding." Let's see how it plays out with campmates and STEP.
JKisha, I really hope you get tickets. I very much enjoyed the time I spent visiting with you.

Re: Hoarding tickets
Just a thought, is it possible that the BMorg did make a wrong calculation of the total amount of tickets applied for in the main sale?
I mean, when applied for tier 3, one ticket, one will play the lotery for tier 1, 2 and 3. So total three tickets required by that one person instead of one?
Can't be I think, but it can explain the high amount of tickets requested.
greetings

Re: Hoarding tickets
Oddly, I am a hoarder by nature, but I only ordered the tickets I needed, two. I just fiqured that if I was meant to get tickets, I would get them, if not, I could miss BM for the first time in five years. I will be ok. I will suffer a little, but I will appreciate the experience so much more for having gone through this trial.
Re: Hoarding tickets
My original plan was to enter the presale for 2 (I need two) and if that didn't work, have my girlfriend and I each enter the main sale for 2 (so that would mean I would have been a hoarder.. I'm just trying to be honest,) however, I got my presale tickets.

Re: Hoarding tickets
@tamarakay - hoarding is essentially getting more than you need. That doesn't mean that people who do it are horrible evil people, or even bad people. Some people do it for great reasons - covering for campmates or projects, or even to gift. Unfortunately, in a situation where there aren't enough to go around, those actions come at someone else's expense. There's no clear wrong/right, it's just an unfortunate situation brought on by scarcity.

Re: Hoarding tickets
For years, wasn't sitting at two computers, trying to hit the send button at the exact second tickets went on sale (using the link to the atomic clock), trying to use the back button on one, only to find that stopped the entire process, then pinning your hopes on the other computer where you didn't hit the back button, then waiting, and waiting, for hours, year after freakin' year, reading the angst right here in eplaya, demands to fire the "friends" of BM running the ticket thing, who only got it right ONE year out of how many??? I remember running Windows 98 with a modem to get tickets....
Wasn't that "gaming the system"
How was that game any different?
Everyone getting tickets struggled to get them.
I feel sorry for those who buy into the "not fair to others" bit.
All those "extra" tickets will go to others, and won't they be happy?
Yes, it sucks for big camps. They will be begging right here, and probably be GIFTED some tickets!
It wasn't fair for years, and neither is this. Neither is life, and yet, we live...
