Kites and Tethered Aviation / Art
If anyone has done notable kite work or tethered flying art work, I would be interested in talking to them. I would be curious about any environmental or logistical issues that may not be apparent.
- I am aware of the winds from 0 – 40MPH. That does not bother me. No wind is often easier than high wind. High wind provides its own opportunities.
I would be curious if there was any notable wind pattern, such as night winds, or mid-day shifts to look for. (The wind often follows the sun…)
- I am aware of the dust, and I am curious as to its properties and abrasiveness / salt content.
As well, if the dust has a notable impact on certain fabrics, carbon fiber or the like, that might be useful. Not a big deal, but some things can be accommodated to minimize the inherent self destruction of my work.
I have some ideas. I suspect they have appeared in BRC before. But as I begin to design and build, I would like to be as far ahead of the curve as possible. I appreciate that whatever will be will be, and nothing my go as planned, but I just assume do the best I can.
I am somewhat retentive on many things, and I appreciate I am going to a place where that does not work well. But I am also capable of spending hundreds of hours on a piece to see it live only for minutes, and have gloriously done so a few times. Sometimes you build it and watch it fly, then you watch it fly away and that is the way of things.
See you on the playa.

the winds of 40mph can be /sustained/ winds.
Sustained Wind
Wind speed determined by averaging observed values over a two-minute period.
Gusts of 70mph can be possible at ground level..
..the prevailing winds come from the southwest..

That kite work is great. I would love to talk to who did it.
Much over 40mph though and we can start lifting some small trucks.

its super fine like talcum powder..
it can cause corrosion on aluminium tent poles in just 1 week
cause a 3 pound sledge to look like it stayed out in the rain for months in just 1 week
..turn your cuticles and other sensitive parts of your body into bloody hamburger mess in 3-4 days..
it will change your black fabric covered instrument case in just a day or so..

it gets every where
it tastes chalky in your mouth when you breath it
sometimes it helps to wear goggles because it gets into yer eyes in white outs..

Yeah, I was expecting something up there. Note: Limit exposure of carbon wrapped aluminum. Thanks.
Awesome that there is a DTA. PM on the way.
