So I got this on a post xmas sale:

The rope lights can be connected end to end. I don't think the copper wire lights are the safest for clothing use, though it's super malleable and doesn't heat up when I plug it in (package claims it's for "invisibly" decorating a christmas tree), but I'm no expert. Would you use it in costumery?

Any ideas what to do with this all? I'm a bit stumped at the moment. Could use some inspiration.

BTW, they are super bright, I dialed down the photo so you can see the pretty rainbows better.

The wire lights could be made into a terrific hat, just store the battery pack at the back of your head. I used a much shorter strand as a tophat band. Little hearts, cute! I have little stars too, for a hat for MyLarry.

Those lights are amazing fufa! If you are worried about the copper try searching for more info on how to cover the wiring. Not sure how easy or hard that would be but I would think it can be done.

Does the warnings in the package say anything about exposure to the elements?

Keep in mind that there must be some type of insulation on that copper wire - even if you don't see it. Otherwise it would constantly short out. Generally insulated wire like that is coated with a lacquer or some other paint type coating. It is very common in electric motors, transformers and similar items requiring many toghtly wound strands of wire.

I would think that it should be ok anyplace where it doesn't get flexed a lot such as a hat like has been suggested.

It's a wall plug but the output to the string is 12V (0.5A, 6W). It does look like 3 very thin copper strands twisted around each other. It would have to be a microscopic coating, because I sure as hell can't see anything on it.

But I would think that if you get help from a friend you could probably make a pattern measuring your height and having the fabric fold where the zipper would go.

I wish I could just wing a pattern from my head but im not that good. But those look like they would work. Maybe I could see if Goodwill has a set of jamies like this then just take them apart and make a bigger pattern?

or something like this. Just make almost like a snuggie then sew up from the feet in a horse shoe shape?

looks like I am going to have to go to des moines this weekend and go fabric hunting! ( no fabric places in my city) What do you guys think would be the best fabric to make this out of? I will prob wear it in the eve and night.

fleece is easy to sew and not that expensive. It would be a really big project if you made it out of faux fur and very very warm and expensive. I made a big furry coat with a hood last year. It was not cheap and it really took a toll on my little sewing machine. it was also a lot of material (faux fur) to work with...

plus fleece will keep you super warm if you plan on wearing at night.

Yeah DEFF not going the fur route! I do leg warmers and that is about it. I was giving some thought to a fur coat though. But it will cost me about $120 to make one. OUCH!! I think I may just use my normal winter coat and tack stitch fur onto the collar,bottom and cuffs. Maybe make a fur hood to go on it. Start with what you have right?

Edit: never mind found fleece online joanns. 4.99 a yard! SCORE! Wonder how much I would need for something like this. I wear a womens 22 , 5'8 and 35 inseem

Before you go adding things to your normal winter coat... Scope your local thrift shops like crazy! You can find some great older coats (fur and leather are my favourites) to modify. I was able to find a long suede one with a fur collar for a steal at $25 last year. You don't need something that is built to -30'C like a winter coat (I'm assuming this, that's what mine is like...Oh Canada...), something that's a bit lighter (think freezing point temps) is more than warm enough in my opinion.

I looked them up and they are like 30-90 each! I might was well spend the little extra and make all fur. I think I am just going to use my coat. It is a wool pea coat and fits me really well

Most of my sewing is done by modifying womens patterns to fit me and a 22 is big enough (except in the shoulders). For a full length coat it usually takes 7 - 8 yards for the shell (depending on fabric width), same amount of lining material, and about 1 yard of fur for collars, lapels, and cuffs.

Most of my sewing is done by modifying womens patterns to fit me and a 22 is big enough (except in the shoulders). For a full length coat it usually takes 7 - 8 yards for the shell (depending on fabric width), same amount of lining material, and about 1 yard of fur for collars, lapels, and cuffs.
