??where was the love this year?? art is not competion

Post by Guest » Thu Sep 09, 2004 7:44 pm

One morning I was playing my gtr, I had it up pretty loud, it was 10am a time which I think is time to rise, others did not. The thing about was a saw a guy on spring stilts and told him that I liked what he had going on and he replied" Fuck off your music sucks and you shouldn't even call yourself an artist" That really hurt, I know that everyone has a title to own opinion but why come here and try to fight, he asked me how many years I had been I said 2 he laughed and said he'd been here for 5 and that if he wanted he would have me kicked out of the city if I played my gtr anymore, I didn't think there was such thing as seniority at BM, I just want to share what I have LoVe and Music and I guess if that's not good enough for anyone, maybe I'm not wanted anywhere not even at Burning Man- This is the only place I Can be myself or I thought

?????????Is the Love gone???????? has greed plagued even BM??????????
No I won't let one soul get to me and art and music is not a competion, tried to jam with others and sometimes got a snarl, why people asked me if I was trying to show off I dont know, you can't make a rocker stand still.
I even had another group ask if i was better than him, Art is based on Style and everyone is different, therefore infinite different styles, Everyone is killer at what they do and that's what makes it divine.

Love is for Everyone- I forgive the bouncing man for hating me, you can't be liked by everyone. See you next year- Natas

Love you All till the end- Natas

That was pretty harsh of that stick-legged dude to do that. Some people get a kick out of being mean to people. Don't let one idiot dowse your burn. If you make it home next year, I would be happy to sit and listen to you play for a while.

Take care.

self expression means bad opinions too...

Post by Professor Tawdry » Thu Sep 09, 2004 8:12 pm

I agree that stilt-guy was an asshole about your music, but I thought Burning Man is a festival for the violent and radical expression of art. Its not specifcally a hippy love parade, but it is for some. Its not a place to burn your camp, but it is for some. Its not a place to videotape people haveing sex, but it is for some.

if it were me I would have followed stilt-guy around the rest of the day singing obnoxous songs about how much his corny-store-bought stilts were.

Anyway - Thanks for coming: I hope that asshole didnt ruin your experience.
Wheres my fucking gift?

this wasn't the dickheads trip , he was someone who couldn't handle his shit, I was on vacation, and didn't want to have to deal with my everyday playing in a bar and having to kick some mother fucking ass, my trip is to try and get away from that shit.

hey that's really lame man. i would have loved to see more people playing guitar...but when you think about it, out of the 35,000 people there, not all of them are going to be nice. ya know?

Like I was sayin, I was there to be me, and sometimes I'm the meanest most manic depressive jerk out there. It' s was the lack off soul power this year and who wants to have to break someones legs on vacation, no one, if I find something I don't like I won't even waste my energy on it I just walk on by, I believe society is for starting shit because it is shit.

i cant believe that

Post by moonbeam327 » Thu Sep 09, 2004 11:05 pm

Im sorry that even had to happen to you.. things like that can be so hard even if you try to just move on it gets to you. Why would someone come to burning man to put someone else down like that.. It might be about radical expression as someone said earlier.. but i also think its about community and open mindedness.. it says so right in the rules.. bring and open mind. i would have love to have heard more guitar out there maybe next year if you come back I'll have to find and hear ya play :)

I hope you are able to see that this is just one person.. and people are people.. i personally wish people like that would have just stayed home. I had a couple not so nice experiences but definately nothing that upsetting.. and its like thats not what burning man is about.. its not about putting others down .. or making their day worse.. its about being a part of something bigger and contributing .. and being positive and open to things and people.

Stilted opposition - burnier than thou... bullshit.

Post by XS » Fri Sep 10, 2004 10:46 am

It's a drag that stilt-man resorted to "how many burns haveth thou?" bullshit. I mean I'm a relative newbie, year two under the belt, but when I arrived last year I believed I "got it", and the experience of community itself made it clear how to behave. Live, love, help not hurt, tolerate not obliterate, express yourself, clean up after yourself, and do all of these things without hurting others, including verbal abuse, which is just an ugly aspect of our civilian-selves that bubbles to the surface when we are threatened, afraid or impatient. Girl I'm sure you rock. If not just simply groove. Let no one piss on your parade baby. Remember Karen Carpenter "Sing! Sing your Song..." or even Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?"..... word up.
Too much is never enough.

Art + Competition = Better Art

Post by bizdeviant » Fri Sep 10, 2004 12:20 pm

Terribly sorry to hear of your negative interpersonal experience; the stilted guy was a straight-up cockface.

That said, I have to disagree with the subject line of your original posting. In fact, I suspect the lack of competitive artistic spirit, found predominantly in the San Francisco crowd, is what drives the mediocrity of the SF music and art scenes (which spills into BRC).

I love living in SF, but it ain't for the art and it ain't for the music. This town and its progeny, BRC, are sadly limited by the post-hippie/post-rave "It's all good" ethos that takes a dive on responding critically *and* competitively to it art. It is a pretty fucking sad day when Akron sports more innovative DJs, Albequerque better rock bands, and Vancouver more confrontational artists than the flagship American city for cultural diversity and artistic openness.

I look at NYC and I sometimes hate the friction, but I have to admit that those kids take real pride in their assorted subcultural scenes and they take even more pride in their artistic contributions. They can't count on a warm uncritical environment to welcome their artistic efforts on equal footing with that of their peers. I find that this stress creates less broad community, but *far* more interesting and innovative subcultures and art/music/writing/performance.

The preceding is not by way of saying that Burners should be anything less than welcoming and friendly to every other Burner. But it is a polemical in support of ranting to everyone you meet about the art that you genuinely like and are fascinated by, and being honest, WHEN ASKED, about the art you don't.

Finally, there is awesome shit every year and I myself can point out great exceptions to the SF mediocrity rule. My point here, however, is that, as the primary source of BM participants, we are not producing enough quality and innovation to keep BRC artistically vibrant and musically interesting. Too many of us are just going along to get along socially in the SF scene and that ain't producing the crazy, most fucked-up art/music/performances that BM deserves.

Your results may vary.

I was high when I wrote that message after reading it today alot of it makes no sense, love is not for everybody is what i meant, {stoner}

and by hurt I meant hostile and ready to destroy- whoever quoted me on thinking BM was a hippie love parade

A metalhead needs a break from busting skulls once in a while

That was the point I was trying to get across

I ll just bring my own stage next year and anyone who wants to rock can rock

man, if you were gettin your stairway on at a loud volume at 10 a.m. I would be fuckin pissed. There is something dreadful about solo electric guitar fumbling. Maybe I have spent too much time in music stores. I would not get all burnier than thou on your ass though. I would suffer in silence. Or maybe drag the P.A. out and suffer in non-silence.

Hey Natas, Hair Of The Dog has a stage (and even supply the instruments) and I know that there were other stages out there set up for the purpose of having random folks just stop by and jam. I'd suggest that next year you stop by there (or one of the others, check the who what where) and have at it. Most anything seems to go!
