Perhaps burner's narcissism had a role.
After searching the forum, I've seen a very clear pattern in the posts. Lottery system + transferable tickets = scalping and hoarding. Add to that profound increase in demand, and you've got a perfect storm. 3 factors this serious are enough to cause a cataclysm for any organization.
Why do I presume a radical increase in demand? Because no one, anywhere in my network, NO ONE is sitting on tickets, and we have seen precious few gloats from scalpers. But I have seen press EVERYWHERE on every social network with burners talking about how cool Burning Man is.
I can only conclude that every "Ode to Burning Man" on you tube, every documentary on TV, every website commemorating the burn has finally reared its head, and everyone else thought it would be cool to come home, too. Don't hate them, think of it as a natural consequence of our constant glorification of ourselves and our playa experience. As a result, I suspect we've diluted the experience to the point that theme camps and art collectives can't function. After a bad year, a lot of people will go home with no intention of coming back, and some sense of normalcy may return. But in the mean time, I think the community has created much of the scarcity it's experiencing by so tirelessly saying "look at us, we're so cool" to the world.

Kernul, I am going to begin PMing that to everyone with less than 5 posts as soon as they utter the word 'scalper."

Re: Perhaps burner's narcissism had a role.
this just in from facebook
"I am a 14 year veteran... 14 years in a row. I was not awarded a ticket. I am VERY, VERY, VERY disappointed in the new system. I must say, that if I don't get a ticket to this event & the BORG doesn't fix this, THIS YEAR... I WILL be going someplace else with my vacation dollars. The REAL problem that the BORG is facing is they have broken the "habit" of Burning Man. People such as myself, th...at have been attending for over a decade, are CRUSHED by this out come. Because they have interrupted the consecutive habit & those who have attended for decades, are focusing their creative energies else ware. RE-CREATING that habit of attending may prove to be an impossibility. The BORG has destroyed the community feeling.. Personally, I feel as if I have been cheated on...
There has always been a running "joke" that last year was better than this year. The unfortunate fact is... This is going to be a VERY REAL comment this time around. It is VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE for this to be good year, due to the SERIOUS theme camp fragmentation that is going to be certain this year. If you have been to Burn 2011, relish in it. It TRUELY is, going to be better than this year. The Burn has run it's course & the reason that the Burn WILL fail, is due to it's internal screwup.
The Mayans were right 2012 is the end of (our world).... Nice job BORG! You destroyed something VERY special...I hope your proud."
what word comes to mind after reading this?

burning man isnt the howard johnson or the mariott, complaining like a whiny bitch that youre gonna take your vacation dollars elsewhere wont end up with you getting a comp'd room, or an upgrade to a king sized suite.

You're right of course - people get into habits, and this one's been broken for many. We will see this in Black Rock City, the question only being to what degree. Saying so on eplaya will get you the cursory whinging/whinging accusation, enjoy.

Agreed. But hopefully intelligent and persistent activism will get a policy change that isn't such a disincentive to scale... because as I'm discovering, scale is what makes BM better than regionals, and we need to find policies that support it at least in art and services offered by original theme camps (I'm less a fan of sound camps, but that's my personal bias).lemur wrote:burning man isnt the howard johnson or the mariott, complaining like a whiny bitch that youre gonna take your vacation dollars elsewhere wont end up with you getting a comp'd room, or an upgrade to a king sized suite.

The loud camps make it bearable to miss some years.
