If I was given an oyster on the half shell, I'd spit it out. Nasty little suckers.

Its a big thing here in Chesapeake country, but not for me. They wouldn't even get close enough to my mouth to spit.

My experience has been just to swallow them. Don't chew. I made that mistake when I was a kid once and gross *shudder*

Definitely must be fresh!

Last time I had them it grossed the (at the time) girlfriend out, and it was her father serving them. Even though I got a little grief for it, she told me to eat them more often the following morning.

I go to a sushi place locally that calls them the "honeymoon special" They serve them with a quail egg yoke and a lump of raw sea urchin in them....mmmmmmmmmm

Then I think they charge you 12 dollars or something nuts.

Awwww, knowmad...I'm not a pure Washingtonian. I'm a California transplant. Been here for just over 14 years. I used to live by the beach in CA., and still never liked oysters because they looked slimey.

Speaking of slimey things...okra...now that is disgusting!! That I would spit out! But lobster...now THAT I'd swallow! yummmmmmy goodness.

If you mean the skin from warmed milk, I won't swallow that, ewwww. I get a spoon and take it out of the mug.

Short story: I was on the pier at Capitola a while back. Some doofus from the east coast was so excited about eating raw oysters he made someone take a picture of him eating the oyster. Big deal.

I can't remember what animal has to close its mouth all the way before opening it again. I'm like that. If it goes in my mouth I'm swallowing it. No half way, no kind of eating. It goes in, it's down the tubes.

They say bravest person in world was first to eat Oysters.

Saying that, swallow. If superfresh, or certain type (Kumamotos or bluepoints), chew first - yum. Maybe touch of horseradish, depending on where oyster was from - as flavor accessory, never to cover flavor.

If is not fresh (eg has tan slimy top, not characteristic watery gray multi"color" live oyster look), then I throw at wait-person for selling rotten food. And will usually get gratis meal. (Working in seafood establishment as young party member had privileges!)... If is presented tan and slimy, it is not fresh, but dead and rotting. NEVER eat tan slimy oyster - force manager of slophouse to down plate of them in front of you... But only slimy tan ones. Tell him to procure dozen just like that, and to eat every one in front of you. Then if he's that foolish, leave anyway before he hurls greviously in thy presence.

NEVER is a reason to eat dead raw oysters. NYET NYET NYET NYET NYET!!! Is like swallowing other questionable substance from other questionable sources.
