Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
Not really a very controlled poll (I have no way of know my margin of error let alone my what portion of the population I'm sampling), but yet another attempt to scope the current situation in advance of STEP implementation.

Wow, still no one who will offer tickets via step about 1 hour+ into the thread.
Thanks to those who responded with their need.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
Your poll is worthless because it is missing the critical option:
- Buying/selling tickets at face value outside of STEP.
Instead, the closest thing you have is that stupid "I have tickets [that] I'll scalp via other services than STEP". That option labels anyone buying or selling tickets outside of STEP a scalper, including those selling their spare tickets to other camp mates.
Anyway, who cares? It's in late February and really has no meaning right now.

Notice all the poll it grabbing is demand, nothing on the supply side. Not that it really matters, in the recent Burning Man Addresses 2012 Ticket Situation post estimates that 75% to 80% of those who requested tickets didn't get what they were asking for.BBadger wrote:Your poll is worthless because it is missing the critical option:

The poll is "stupid" for a lot of other reasons beyond the one you've chosen to badger me about. Consider this, I'm trying to gather information from a very emotional crowd at the moment. Its a lot like trying to get bubble gum out of your hair with peanut butter, but hey no one is stopping you from ringing Gallup and asking them to spin up something with much better controls. I'm just curious and its interesting that no one with a pile of spare tickets has responded.

As of 21:30 there are no respondents with supply.
8 people who need 1 ticket
13 people who need 2 tickets and
1 person who needs more than 2 tickets
22 people responded needing ~37 tickets

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
I seriously doubt that there will be any extra tickets, other than those in the hands of serious scalpers, it's all down to the March draw from now on, even if tickets were put forward to STEP, I wonder if they will even get there, BMorg need tickets to divert to theme camps and although it's not 'fair' it still makes some sense for BMorg to break the rules and do this.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
how is step any different than the lottery?
Wont the scalpers just get all these tickets too?
Seems the best solution is for burners to redistribute their extra tickets themselves.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
I just realized that it is missing one more area on the poll. Some additional questions could be added to give a better idea of the percentages derived from this:
I got one ticket that I needed.
I got two tickets that I needed.
I am selling the extra tickets to friends, or camp/tribe/team mates.
I am gifting the extra tickets to friends, or camp/tribe/team mates.
These give an idea of the number of tickets that are held by burners that are not going to enter the sales environment either through STEP or other means.
There also has to be a realization looking at this that eplaya is a portion of the burner community and not representative of the whole.
And I was so looking forward to going this year for the first time.

We don't know if you're right or wrong. We have no way of knowing. I suspect that since it is going through the LLC, they will notice if a particular request is from a person or a card that that is a known scalper.djmattdunn wrote:how is step any different than the lottery?

Again, we don't know if "scalpers" got many from the main sale, either.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
It is real scary to see no one is going to use STEP to sell tickets but the poll shows that a ton needs 1 or 2 tickets. I know people will say it does not reflect the all the burners but guess what there is not 1 person voted yes not even as a joke. Anyway you look at it at least one thing for sure is either people have no clue what STEP is going to be about ( not good) or people are not aware of it or even care

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
@djmattdunn - based on the listings we've seen online so far, it does not appear that scalpers obtained a large chunk of the ticket supply. We know the system prevented the use of automated ticket buying software (something Coachella didn't do), and we know we caught and stopped many scalpers (something Coachella does not appear to have even attempted, but we don't know how many were successful. Nor do we know how many of the people offering tickets are scalpers by trade or regular burners who are looking to cash in. I took a look online yesterday at eBay, StubHub, and one of the pro scalper ("ticket broker") sites, and found 116 tickets for Burning Man listed. By comparison, 2606 tickets to Coachella were being offered at the same locations. Yes, Coachella had 4x more tickets in play (160K) than the 40K awarded last week, but there were 20 times more tickets available. The ticket exchange will go through the registration process and be scrubbed to remove known scalpers and scammers.
@mosquitopilate - for what it's worth, I don't think this poll has a large enough sampling or the capacity to be very accurate. Everyone who was awarded tickets in the main sale (along with those who did not receive tickets) will receive an email with additional information and links when the program launches, and it will also be covered in the Jack Rabbit Speaks.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
My Guess is that between 50% and 2/3 of the tickets have been awarded to scalpers -They had two full weeks to get their orders in and didn't need automated ticket buying programs. The BMORG is in denial. Significantly, it has not even admitted how many tickets could have been sold if all orders could have been filled. We have only been told that the average order requested 1.7 tickets. Some people have estimated that that there were orders for over 120,000 tickets, based on the fact that about 2/3 of Burners appear to have been rejected. - The Cochella festival starts April 13, a little over 2 months from today. It should be no surprise that there are lots of scalped tickets for sale, from scalpers who want to get rid of them - Burning Man is in August. Smart scalpers with a lot of tickets will offer them for sale one or two at a time so as to not flood the market.

Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
This is it exactly. Talk to folks who have experience with ticket sales and they will tell you. They won't release any significant amount of tickets until the last of them have been sold anyway. If folks are using the amount of tickets they see available now they are just deluding themselves. If not to scalpers, where the hell did all the tickets go? Saying it's because everyone on the planet wanted to go this year because of one YouTube video is just ridiculous. It's face-slappingly (new word!) frustrating that folks are still in denial.Franklin1948 wrote:It should be no surprise that there are lots of scalped tickets for sale, from scalpers who want to get rid of them - Burning Man is in August. Re: Selling STEP, Buying STEP?
STEP isn't even open yet, and non-scalpy people with an extra ticket may still be thinking "I'll try my friends first, then go with STEP after that." Whereas we ticketless souls already know we are ticketless. Hence, not necessarily a meaningful poll result.
