How to get a ticket.

Post by nncoco » Tue Feb 07, 2012 5:11 pm

I feel for you folks who don't have tickets but don't despair.

Last year I was left without a ticket after the sellout and I can say with a degree of certainty that many of you will find a face-value ticket if you are patient and don;t mind the stress of waiting until the week or two before the event.

Every year I would plan for the burn with my friends and get a ticket the week before for free or at a sizable discount from some hapless Burner who couldn't go. I thought 2011 would be the same so I waited as usual only to be caught with my pants down in late July.

It is hard to get the time and money together to get out to Black Rock City. Every year there are countless people with last minute change of plans that break up whole groups of people planning to go. Those tickets then become available.

Even last ever with all the chaos for tickets I was able to find three different sources of face-value tickets on the last second to last Saturday, a full 8 days before the gate opened.

Here is what you do:

Start looking early. Contact every Burner you know and let them know you are looking so you are the first person they will call if they hear of something.

Call the scammers and scalpers on Craigslist and offer them face value plus a few bucks for their trouble - no more. Do not support scalpers, professional or amateur. A real burner will never sell or buy a ticket at an inflated mark-up even if that means sitting out for a year. Be prepared emotionally to stay home.

Be patient, be diligent be creative and you will find a way home.

Good luck!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I did not get a ticket at the lottery but we still have the 10k left and 6 months of people discovering that actually, despite having a ticket, this year will not be their year. I am keeping my eyes and ears peeled for me and my fellow camp mates who did not win. I know the fire in my belly will only lead to finding tickets and will make the sweat on my brow when hammering in rebar will be all the sweeter.

Oh, and i was in the same boat as you last year. I did not find out i could go until 3 weeks before the event and picked up my ticket from a fellow burner here in Brooklyn who couldn't go due to financial and work obligations.
