Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
The problem with tickets and scalpers can only be fixed by having more tickets available than people that want to attend.
Since the BLM controls attendance, the only solution is to reduce the number of people that WANT to attend.
I propose we do this by banning all the large scale sound camps. The people who show up at these camps are just there
to party and don't participate (ok, maybe a few do, but in general they are mostly ravers who would be better off going to EDC).
Maybe we can even get Insomniac to run a parallel Electronic Music festival somewhere else the same weekend to dry and draw these people away.
This could easily drop ticket demand by 5,000-10,000 or so and solve the problem for a long while.

While I personally would like it if the ravers stayed home, it isn't for me to decide. If it happened, I'd be like "Yay, freedom from dubstep! and Nooo, we're doing racial cleansing!", all at the same time. Attraction/Repulsion, like MacBeth with the dagger. But we know where it lead him. Not going there.
The road of life is littered with flat squirrels who couldn't decide.

Nope, not from a bass camp, or any sound camp for that matter (nor do I visit any), but every time I see one of these "OH WHY DON'T WE JUST GET RID OF people in RVs/ravers/burgins/spectators/solo-campers/Jews/shirtcockers/nerds/etc." (not all of those have actually been mentioned) my response to that is: "Why don't we just get rid of YOU instead?"

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
This makes me sad, I am 53 years old, and I was just getting the hang of being a raver.
I have a solution, why not relax the rule on driving RVs around the playa, it works like this, regular burners encircle the playa in their RVs and drive around for a couple of hours and build up massive dust storms, this way all the virgins this year will report how terrible camping at BM is, they won't return and it will put off further virgins next year, then we will know only the resilient will be returning.

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
Lets have the camps but ban dubstep! Oh wait that'll only deter things for a couple more years.
The RV created dust storms sounds fancy....
Honestly I cant tell you how many times I wish Pink Floyd was coming out of those huge speakers at sunrise...and I dont even like Pink Floyd
I know its douchey to pick out something you dont like about Bman and say you wanna ban it....but man just for fun I am going to have to agree with OP.
I love music, so I am naturally attracted to ANYTHING music, every year I find myself up at the large sound camps to check something I like out. It gets less and less every year because they have just gotten too huge for my PERSONAL liking. Last year I helped this nice young couple to the med tent. They were stoked that I looked out for them. They had just gotten to BMan. They said they couldnt find anyone that would stop and help them in all that madness, I was the first. Its just the same story over and over, its sooooo fucking huge up at the large sound camps that its almost too big to look out for one another. I went and saw Beats Antique and after shuffling my bike around for an hour I finally hit the dance floor but was elbowed out by fuck heads. I quickly left after that, Beats Antique sounded boring anyway.
If this makes me douchey then oh well, but doesnt the BMorg decide on what camps go where? Why does this HUGE clique of camps get the same treatment every year? I hate to agree but I am going to have to, there ARE a shit ton of people who go to BMan just to be at these camps. I have friends who help create them....some great people.....They are proud of their work and I am proud of them, there are some beautiful monstrosities up on the edges of our city.....I am just ranting at this point
I guess my point is, taking those large camps away WOULD actually help ticket supply I bet.....

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
I think of dubstep at BM like I do the theme camps: I don't patronage it/them, but I like the atmosphere it brings to the event. Hell, sometimes I hear or see something I enjoy with it too. In the end, whatever people bring to BM to share is their own decision, and I thank them for it. Personally, what I think would get rid of most of the people who have a small investment in the event is to just close the gates to entrance after Wednesday. You're either here for most of the event, or you're not here. Still, how people burn is not really my problem as long as they're not thieves or something of that nature.

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
If you're going to have an event with a cap of 50,000 and 70,000 want to go, you have to exclude somebody. The question is who. It can be people who can't afford tickets. It can be people who don't win a lottery. It can be people who need an RV. It can be people who can't come for a full week. It can even be ravers. If what is selected is something we love, we will declare that to be an unacceptable proposal, otherwise we might love it. The decision to exclude "lottery losers" sounded like something that nobody would lake personally, but in practice it does not appear to work.

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
The large sound camps are best avoided on clusterfuck nights with big names (like Beats Antique now is)... There are much better more intimate parties held all week long at smaller camps or art cars (e.g. Temple of Breaks, Black Rock Hoe Down <---- best music I heard out there this year).... I still enjoy climbing up on a rave camp structure and dancing my ass off in the dust with 1,000 folks but I have to say those glorious moments at the large camps seem to be more fleeting and best done earlier in the week...RedHeaven wrote:Lets have the camps but ban dubstep! 2:00 and 10:00 are there exclusively for large sound so that those 100,000 watt sound system are faced towards the outer playa instead of blasting the city all night....seems to me it works pretty well. And, by the way, it is easy to get placed there even if you don't have a sound system. We've camped next OT and Basecamp in past years and we are not a sound camp. But I don't recommend it!
Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
At Burning Man they came first for the Ravers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Raver.
Then they came for the Shirtcockers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Shirtcocker.
Then they came for the RVers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a RVer.
Then they came for the Hippies, and I didn't speak up because I was a Hippie.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.

I think everybody should be required to play music off of my iPod and my iPod only. Also, you should only be allowed to wear clothing that I find appropriate, and if you're going to be naked, you have to pass an inspection first so that your body doesn't hurt my delicate sensibilities.

Re: Eliminate ravers to fix ticket problem
If you want to limit attendance, doing it randomly is probably closest in line with the spirit of Burning Man because it doesn't target any particular group, but that hasn't worked so well either because it is going to end up keeping the large contributors at home this year. So we now know that this is a complex situation and any solution, except raising the attendance limit, will involve tradeoffs.mickle wrote:The problem with tickets and scalpers can only be fixed by having more tickets available than people that want to attend.
Since the BLM controls attendance, the only solution is to reduce the number of people that WANT to attend.
You see your solution of eliminating large sound camps as a good tradeoff, but I don't. And if I gave a different tradeoff that I liked better, you might not like it. Those differences of opinion are where the complexity of what to do comes. Namely, how do we limit attendance such that it impacts the community the least negatively as a whole? That's a question that might take a long time to answer.
Of course the real solution is to raise the attendance limit somehow (which I realize is a solution riddled with its own complexities). Only then can Burning Man continue to be all inclusive as it has been and, thus, not have to answer the question of who should and should not attend.

Considering that you condone the theft of private property, the burning of peoples tents while they are sleeping in them, and colluding with law enforcement to set people up for bogus charges it really doesnt surprise me that you now want to murder burners with a gas chamber.BBadger wrote:Can we instead just gas people who make suggestions like this?
