Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
When I saw this thread I had to just shake my head.
Boycotting an event because you don't have tickets just sounds so absurd, or perhaps redundant is a better word.

I think the boycott is a great idea! Then the people who REALLY want to go will be able to get tickets. Yeah!
OR...Just boycott the scalpers and eventually they will be forced to sell their tickets back to STEP at face value and then the people who REALLY want to go will be able to get tickets. Yeah!
Oh gotta go feed the chix--they're pecking at the back door!

well, really, if you don't have a ticket, how could you not boycott the Burn?

Boycotting the burn is not radically inclusive.. you need a ticket to boycott. They're not making anything easy for you.
EDIT: Radically inclusive may be the wrong term.. as pointed out by Erics definition in a different thread (or maybe it was earlier in this one.) .. let's just say the odds of getting the opportunity to go to burning man with a valid ticket is equal to the odds of having the opportunity to boycott it by obtaining a ticket then refusing to go. Now i just confused myself.. time to eat an apple and re-evaluate my morning.
EDIT: FYI.. Found Eric's quote.. "If it's understood as "anyone is welcome" instead of "everyone is guaranteed to be able to attend" it can still exist fine."

That's a brilliant idea, and could never backfire ever! After all, it's not like anyone needs more than few days notice that they've got a ticket to be able to get everything they need and get to the Playa!
By Jove, I think you've solved it!

Well the first step in a boycott is the conscious decision to not buy/participate in something--not that you were forced into that position.

Actually it does not. If you really wanted to go this year and if you had "won" a ticket, I would take you more seriously. This boycott you suggest seems to be an act of convenience.

agreed, of course im going on the notion that "the more people that get pissed off and decide not to go - the better chance i have at getting tickets."
Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
I wrote a blog awhile back, taking a bunch of odd stuff and claiming that the Burn was over. Yuk yuk and ripped apart in Eplaya.
Now, not so sure, the logic holds and the Burn may be morphing into something else.

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
The theory is we boycott his year and somehow undermine the value of tickets to scalpers ... do we then have to make sure that every future burn is just kind of mediocre? Not so much a "Top 10 Things to Do Before You Die" as a "maybe worth it if you're in the area and the Gerlach Country Club is closed"? and then demand will totally slump and the fear of sell out will never haunt us again!
Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
Boycott because you don't have a ticket yet? Sounds kinda like "He didn't dump me, I dumped him!"

I am de facto boycotting the burn. I asked for 1 ticket. They gave me none tickets.

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
I propose that you Vacate the Burn because I believe that it is the best way to cost the scalpers, who have cost many of you your burn, their money. I hope that they lose $200 to $400 per ticket, many of them could lose tens of thousands. That kind of loss could deter them from playing a game that they have lost due to your actions. I had decided to take this year off, didn't put in for tickets, but I fear for the future of the event. I've been 8 years in a row, and I love it, even as it changes. I'm engaging and arguing and taking heat for a ticket situation I have no intent in participating in because I have a ton of faith in burners, and although I have no hostility toward the Org, I have no faith in their ability to fix the situation.

I'm not going to ruin my burn just to (try to) ruin some scalper's "burn." Some murder-suicide kind of thing... or suicide-murder?

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
OP, you realize that the major flaw in your logic is that if we all abandon the burn to make the scalpers eat the cost of the tickets that would actually cost burners as well don't you?? It's not like BMorg is going to refund us the ticket cost because we decided not to show up. Losing a few thousand dollars will in no way shape or form put them out of business or hinder them from trying again next year. There's demand to go to BM. No public ruse we attempt will EVER hide that. Demand means they'll buy tickets and attempt to profit.
You also realize that if we were to boycott the burn, the scalpers would win a secondary moral victory. While they eat the cost of the tickets, they would be depriving us of the experience that we all hold so dearly. Considering the amount of money burners invest into prepping for the week, I'd say that the burn is far far more valuable monetarily to Burners than it is to a scalper who stands to lose a few grand. Not to mention the emotional and spiritual value.
I really don't think you've thought this idea all the way through. Don't be upset though, it was an attempt but like the BMorg has learned not all ideas are as good or workable as they sound at first.

Uncle Sticky is no Troll (and he has been called this for a long time where he is known as a good Burner)...I believe he thinks this will help in some way...but don't let this get in the way of a good thrashing!

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
If I have read this correctly Uncle Sticky was never planning to go this year and he sincerely believes that boycotting the Burn will drive scalpers away from the event. The essential problem isn't the scalpers, its the demand for the event. Scalpers are attracted to events that sell out or have other kinds of demand built in (assigned seating), but they can be dealt with in other ways (discussed ad nauseum on other threads). The demand (and perceived scarcity) for tickets isn't going to go away if everyone who doesn't get a ticket doesn't come to the event.
